6.24.2020 | Luke 1:57-66, 80 | The Birth of John the Baptist Imagine yourself as Elizabeth, the cousin of Mary, as she prepares for the birth of her son. You and your husband have been visited by the angel Gabriel, your husband has been rendered mute, and you know that the rest of your relatives won’t be happy that you’re naming your child, “John.” What does it feel like to stand up for what God calls you to in your community? What is it like to feel God’s blessing and to see your husband unmuted? How do you imagine a big future for your little one, for your family, and for the world?Music: “April” and “Behind Your Window” by Kai Engel found on freemusicarchive.orgCC BY

As we see anti-Semitic conspiracy theories and hate speech surge during the coronavirus pandemic, a historical pattern can be discerned, a tradition of fear and resentment that is well illustrated in the medieval legend of the Wandering Jew. Join me as I explore this Christian legend, connecting it every step of the way with the long history of using Jews as scapegoats for calamities of all kinds. Peter Hurley Father of the Squinch I have been a fan of Peter Hurley's work for some time, and was honored (honoured) to have him on Through My Lens. Especially as I am currently exploring his field of photography more these past couple of weeks. He always conveys his enthusiasm for the art form so passionately in his videos and this episode was no different. He is an artist truly in love with his craft. Philip Roth once wrote that "in every calm and reasonable person, there is a hidden second person scared witless about death." This episode is dedicated to all those "calm and reasonable" folks out there who are secretly scared out of their minds when it comes to death. In 1822, Gregor MacGregor committed what The Economist newspaper has called the ‘biggest fraud in history’ and ‘the greatest confidence trick of all time’. Investors, many of them Scottish, put forward vast sums towards creating a colony in central America. They were told it was a sure bet, a land of milk and honey - another paradise on the isthmus. Sounds familiar? If you listened last week, you might think that once bitten, Scots would be twice shy. Instead, bonds for Gregor MacGregor’s Principality of Poyais were oversubscribed and colonists easy to find. They would all profit from this rich and fertile land that was larger than Wales and ripe for settlement. The only problem was that Poyais didn’t exist. Do you like the podcast? How brothers Rand and Robyn Miller built worlds from a manhole. This is the story of the beginning of Cyan, the company that went on to develop Myst — the all-time top-selling adventure game and one of the most influential videogames ever made. Adapted from interviews for my upcoming book The Secret History of Mac Gaming, which is currently crowdfunding on Unbound. Thank you to everyone who's donated via PayPal or Patreon so far — especially Anuar Lequerica, whose very generous monthly pledge has helped me buy new gear to make a better-sounding show.
