In this episode of Power Producers Podcast, David Carothers sits down with photographer and “first impression architect” Daniel Wakefield to discuss how powerful headshots can elevate a producer's personal brand. Daniel shares the backstory of his transition from high-school science teacher to professional headshot photographer, explaining how his passion for genuine human expression drives him to capture that perfect, confidence-boosting shot. David and Daniel also talk about how stellar imagery can set producers apart on platforms like LinkedIn, foster stronger connections, and open doors to speaking engagements and leadership opportunities. Key Points: From Hobby to Business Daniel reveals how wildlife photography piqued his interest in capturing real human emotions—eventually leading him to study under renowned headshot photographer Peter Hurley. This drive for authenticity now shapes his entire approach to building standout personal brands. The Power of a Confident Image David and Daniel emphasize how a headshot that reflects genuine warmth and approachability can spark curiosity, convey professionalism, and differentiate producers from the sea of generic online profiles—particularly on LinkedIn. Personal Branding and Storytelling Daniel illustrates how posting truly engaging images on social media fosters deeper connections than mere self-promotion. David underscores the value of contributing to community and highlighting the successes of others to grow one's own presence and credibility. Speaking Engagements and Marketing Collateral Through examples with clients like Ciara Gravier, Daniel highlights how top-tier photos help secure keynote spots, stand out at conferences, and broadcast an executive or producer's readiness to deliver tangible value. Going Beyond the Studio Daniel explains that his services extend well beyond Florida. Traveling nationwide, he recreates studio setups within agencies and corporate offices, ensuring each final image reflects a subject's best angle—and best professional self. One fear many air travelers have is catching a cold or some other bug when they fly on an airplane. Why is it that a lot of people seem to get sick on a flight? Is it the air in the plane or maybe it's the bathrooms? Listen as I explain what the most common cause of getting sick is and how to protect yourself. https://www.healthpartners.com/blog/avoid-getting-sick-while-flying/ We often do things because – well, that's the way we do things. Organizations are often very resistant to change and stay stuck in procedures and processes because that's just the way they are done – even if they are not working very well. When you think about it, it doesn't make any sense but nevertheless, that's the way it is. Dan Heath has examined this phenomenon and what he found will fascinate you – and help you figure ways to do things better for yourself or your organization. Dan has been a frequent guest here and has written some great books over the years. His latest is called Reset: How to Change What's Not Working (https://amzn.to/3DCbB4E) Have you ever noticed how time tends to speed up when you are having fun and slow down when you are doing something unpleasant or boring? It's weird because objectively we know that time moves at a constant speed – or does it? Is the way we measure time just arbitrary? Can we and do we experience time at different rates? For example, people often claim that when they are in a car accident, time slows down as if it occurs in slow motion. What is that? Here to explore this with me is Steve Taylor, PhD. He is a senior lecturer and researcher in psychology at Leeds Beckett University and he is author of the book Time Expansion Experiences: The Psychology of Time Perception and the Illusion of Linear Time (https://amzn.to/4gNpvzz) How many times have you looked at photos of yourself and been unhappy with the way you look? Well, there is something you can do with your face that will make you look better in any photo. It's called the squinch and it was developed by legendary photographer Peter Hurley. Listen as I explain how to squinch. There is also a YouTube video that demonstrates it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ff7nltdBCHs PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS!!! Constantly learning and exercising his brain, mind and body, his passion for kayaking is well known. You will hear John say "do for the good of the village" and he lives and breathes this every day to his best intention. I never tire of listening and enjoying his company. As you do this over time you start to absorb their work into your style and then develop your own style. And Pete then took this approach to photography. And he spent lots of time learning the music of the Jazz masters. He spent time working out bass lines of great jazz music. As you do this over time you start to absorb their work into your style and then develop your own style. And Pete then took this approach to photography. First he started working with Peter Hurley doing what Peter told him and absorbing his style. He then moved on to working with Ivan Weiss. Over time he has worked with others and used these to develop his own style. Sam asks how you can learn from a photographer at a distance if you can't speak to them. Pete says he did this with Dan Winters and he did work on replicating one of his photographs, from the composition to the lighting to every other element. He says you will learn so much more from this than looking at it in a book. Marcus thinks that photographers don't look at their history in the same way that musicians do. Pete says to be really good you need to go back and study the past masters before you can move forward with new style. He also says you can't bypass this process. You can go back before photography and study art as well. Pete says he came into photography through mentorship, no training. This has become easier with digital technology so you can work with photographers in different parts of the world. Pete now coaches photographers himself and he has a Facebook group associated with this. They discuss the similarities between Spotify in music and stock libraries in photography. Pete thinks it's best to avoid both as they are a very hard way to make money. Pete says professionalism is important both in music and photography. He has been at gigs where people turn up late, don't dress appropriately and more. It's important that you realise in both cases this is a business and you need to carefully think about that. He says some photographers don't return peoples phone calls. That is bad practice, gives a bad impression and loses you work. Marcus suggests that like musicians concerts are an experience, a photoshoot should be an experience. Sam takes us back to the discussion about Spotify and Shutter Stock and says whenever you use a platform go in with your eyes wide open as that will always be making money for the platform rather than you. Sometimes the platform is useful enough to make it worthwhile but be aware of that the platform are getting from that. Graduated H.S. in 1979 and moved to NY to attend Adelphi University just outside of NYC to major in acting. Graduated from Adelphi in 1983 and moved to London. Spent about a year in London working as an actor. Moved back to NYC in 1984 and spent the next five years working as an actor, director, and writer. Also worked as a bass player doing studio work, touring, and working with local musicians. Additionally, worked as an audio engineer. After a life changing event earlier in the year, moved to L.A. in late '89 and continued my career as a working musician, actor, and audio engineer. In late 1994, newly married and with our first child on the way, took a job at Microsoft as a video teleconferencing engineer and spent the next 20 years at Microsoft working in several capacities: engineer, project manager, program manager, service manager, team manager, etc. I had been working on and off as a professional photographer since 1978; my first professional gig was photographing the band Queen at the Boston Garden for a small local music magazine.  I continued photographing bands as well as people throughout the 80s and in 1994 decided I wanted to eventually make photography my primary career within five years. In 1999, the same year I opened my business to work concurrently with my job at Microsoft, my son was diagnosed with autism which put my plans to open my business on hold as we needed the benefits. That proved to be the right choice as, thanks to all the therapies Microsoft afforded us, my son became a normal “pain-in-the-ass” teenager is now, at age twenty-four, considered one of the top up and coming jazz saxophonists on the West Coast.  In 2008, I created a project called “Stories of Autism” which, over the next ten years, documented the lives of families with members on the autism spectrum by creating and exhibiting portraits and stories of each family's experience. The project became a non-profit organization involving over 250 photographers across the country and documenting the lives of over 500 subjects. The images were exhibited across the country as well as in an online gallery. In 2014, I was part of a mass layoff at Microsoft and decided to go full time into my photography business working mostly as a commercial photographer. In the summer of 2019, I was diagnosed with Meniere's Disease which causes intermittent hearing loss, tinnitus, and vertigo. The episodes of vertigo became too unpredictable to work as a commercial photographer with thousands of dollars on the line. Knowing that the unpredictability of the vertigo episodes would be a risk to my business, during the pandemic I began studying the methods of Peter Hurley, considered the best headshot photographer in the world. Then, in January of 2022, I transitioned my commercial photography business into a business focused almost entirely on headshots. Unexpectedly, that year became my most successful ever for my business and I'm looking to continue its growth in 2023.  We talk about the following among a few other subjects Living in London Working as an actor and a musician  His life changing experience Living in NYC vs LA His son Photography Charlie's Social Media  Charlie's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/charlescotugno/ His website: https://cotugnophoto.com/ Charlie's Twitter: @CotugnoPhoto Charlie's Advice If you're looking to me for that wisdom, you may be looking in the wrong place. Peter is widely considered to be the best headshot photographer in the world and learning from him took Daniel's headshot photography to the next level. Daniel is an Associate Photographer of Peter Hurley and a two-time Headshot of the Week winner. In July 2022, Daniel Wakefield opened his brand-new commercial studio in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. As a Mom with a camera, her journey to specializing in headshots began over 10 years ago when her animal hospital was updating its website. In 2022, after years of study and mentorship under New York headshot photographer Peter Hurley, she was proud to become an Associate Photographer. ABOUT PETER I'm excited to tell you my story, but the truth is that I just feel like a guy lucky enough to pick up a camera. It's been a wild ride and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities that I've been given along the way. It all started while I was training for the Olympic Games. I met then DKNY designer, Caggie Simonelli Bradford, who took me under her wing to help me generate sponsorship opportunities. She caught wind of the fact that Ralph Lauren was looking for real sailors for an upcoming Polo Sport ad campaign and the next thing I knew I was sailing in front of Bruce Weber's lens. Little did I know that day would forever change the trajectory of my life. After my Olympic dream came to an end, I moved to New York to try my hand at a modeling/acting/bartending career that seemed to become a pounding of the pavement experiment. It was at that time that Bruce encouraged me to pick up a camera. I started out by photographing portraits of my model friends and landed my first commercial job photographing sneakers for Reebok. I even had a little stint shooting for Levi's on “The Apprentice.” I loved the portrait work I was getting, however, decided to focus all my efforts on my goal of becoming the best headshot photographer I could be. My signature style of simple clean backgrounds, beautiful lighting, and captivating expressions became all the rage. I was recognized numerous times year after year by Backstage magazine as the best headshot photographer in New York City. I was in my own little world, running a bustling portrait studio when these two characters from Fstoppers, Lee and Patrick, walked in my door and turned my operation on its head. Their interview garnered a ton of attention from up and coming photographers, so with some reluctance at first I decided to begin sharing my “special sauce” if you will. This was one decision that instantly turned my life 90 degrees into another direction. My YouTube videos “It's All About the Jaw” and “It's All About the Squinch” went viral, leading to appearances on Good Morning America and Good Day NY. The New York Times featured my ideas in “6 Tips for Better Portraits” and “How to Pose for a Photograph.” Popular Photography went so far as to dub me “The Headshot King.” Like I said earlier, I'm truly grateful for everything that has come my way. The best part is that I absolutely love what I do and none of it seems like work to me. I believe that everything I've worked to accomplish stems from this one thing: That's it in a nutshell and it is my life's work. When you don't find me with a camera in my hand then you will be sure to see me crusin around on a Laser somewhere in the world or spending as much time as I possibly can with my beautiful wife and precious twin daughters. It all started while Peter was training for the Olympic Games. He met then DKNY designer, Caggie Simonelli Bradford, who took him under her wing to help generate sponsorship opportunities. She caught wind of the fact that Ralph Lauren was looking for real sailors for an upcoming Polo Sport ad campaign and the next thing Peter knew he was sailing in front of Bruce Weber's lens. Little did he know that day would forever change the trajectory of his life. The story was later documented in the New York Times. #PeterHurley #WhoKnewInTheMoment? #Photographer #Shabang https://youtu.be/fejv15Io7zQ https://peterhurley.com/
