After nearly 3 demanding years of touring, Watain composed what could be considered their most grandiose and divisive album of their career. The mythologies and lore that surrounded the group were more present than ever in the record's concept and lyrical themes. Musically, it was just as venomous and violent as their previous offerings, while still managing to push the boundaries of their sound into new territory. The inclusion of traditional vocals, hooks, and even a ballad, aimed to cement Watain as an anomaly of the genre. Hell Bent For Metal host Tom has been back to Roadburn to host another panel about queerness in heavy music, and reports back on how the festival's efforts to make themselves a welcoming, inclusive place have clearly, visibly paid off.The show's been on hiatus due to a bereavement, with Roadburn being the one bright light in the dark. And while the panel (which featured Body Void, Pupil Slicer, Backxwash, and OvO) was a great moment for queerness in heavy music – and Tom personally – it wasn't the only reason that was the case, as the hosts discuss. There's also a rundown of the musical side of a unique festival, including unexpected joy found in Sangre de Muérdago and Oiseaux-Tempête (spelling FAO Matt), and the more expected highlights of the four days in Tilburg.Plus this episode's visit to the Hate Crew Gaybar sees Heimdal by Enslaved and Deathless by Hellish Form added to the jukebox.
Janys-Iren Faughn embodies all facets of getting involved in the heavy metal scene through touring, booking shows, and remaining a true fan of all things heavy and noisy, lusting for pops and crackles all the while. In addition to their solo act, Entresol, and now a member of noise doom act, Body Void, Janys also runs Flossless Presents, allowing Dylan a peak behind the curtain of the day-to-day elements of booking shows, a crucial role in any heavy music scene. They also delve into heshers rocking a Metallica AND a Garth Brooks patch, booking Wolves in the Throne Room for $5, Bell Witch donuts, somehow getting to play with Candlemass, alternate reality horror books, flossing on tour, hating cold weather, and writing your setlist on a frisbee. Support Body Void and Entresol Track featured is "Burn" off the new Body Void EP, Burn the Homes of Those Who Seek to Control Our Bodies, available now!
Traditionally we dedicate this episode to our annual Valentine's Day Massacre. But being minus any female co-hostesses this year, we just weren't feeling it this year. We still want to do something to celebrate this special day though. It's safe to say that everyone in their youth goes through that whole "crush" phase. Those special artists that we had those special feelings for that go beyond just enjoying the tunes. So in the spirit of VDay, we figured we'd share some our crushes from our early daze (not surprising we name two Runaways). As well, we share some stories from when we were face-to-face with some of these objects of our youthful affections. In our "News, Views and Tunes", we crank some new and used from Allegaeon, Abysmal Dawn, Body Void, Heir Apparent, Kat and Life Sentence. Horns Up and Stay Healthy! The LGBT+ heavy metal podcast is joined this week by Willow Ryan, guitarist and vocalist from sludgy doom band Body Void. We chat about how the LGBT+-friendly nature of metal spaces varies between online and the real world, and how freeing playing live can be if you're queer. This week's Camp Classic is the Judas Priest anthem 'Living After Midnight', which has some very unsurprising metaphors for queer life – and a surprising link to Grand Theft Auto. Plus the HCGB jukebox has two new additions, in the shape of In Transmission by Capra, and Multiversal by The Beast Of Nod.

Will takes us back to discovering heavy music through, of all people, Miles Davis and especially guitarist Pete Cosey, playing heavy/jazzy improvised music early on, discovering Electric Wizard and doom, moving from Vermont to San Francisco, coming to terms with being non-binary, using music as an outlet for sorting out and expressing some heavy personal experiences, and ways in which the metal scene succeeds and fails in terms of social justice and inclusion. We're joined by The LitCrit Guy (@thelitcritguy) to talk about Oli Mould's Against Creativity, a book that argues that capitalism has co-opted art, so of course we talk about whether Slimer is a comrade, the lingering trauma of the tapeworm-man episode of the X-files and cereal cafes.
