My guest this week is Dan Tracy, drummer of genre-bending black metal band Deafheaven. We caught up before their blistering set at Core Fest to talk about the 10th anniversary rerelease of their seminal album Sunbather, one of my favourite albums of all time. We also talk metal's recent resurgence, Metallica, the devils lettuce, and much more.

What makes a genre...a genre? When does an album move from one genre to another? Or, more importantly, does any of that really matter?Cody and Hilary delve into Deafheaven's "Sunbather" in our fifth episode. An album exploding with self-reflection, frustration, and power, it catapulted Deafheaven into the spotlight. Ten years after its release, its blast beats and washing guitars continue to spark conversations about classification, "tradition" within genre, and fandom in general. Thanks for listening! Speaking of money matters, we chat about Patreon and why it's becoming an important tool for bands, making music videos that are awesome on a small budget, and the importance of album artwork for death metal. So last month Sunbather turned 10 years old. One of the most positively reviewed albums of 2013, it's style and aesthetic can still be felt in many black metal releases to this day and tt's an album of particular significance to myself and it had a huge impact on the direction my music tastes once I had heard it.So here's a little bonus episode of me disecting the album and it's relevence to me. Hope you enjoy it!
Loved and loathed by many, Sacramento-based Deafheaven's 2013 album Sunbather was a landmark in the crossover of extreme metal into the wider musical consciousness, a bold and declarative fusion of black metal and shoegaze that birthed dozens of bands and inspired years of passionate discourse. Now, a full decade on, we're excited to talk through the album in full, breaking down its significance, its sound, its themes, and its impact on a personal and cultural level. What is it about Sunbather that animates and excites so many people, even today? Let us know what the album means to you in the comments on YouTube.
We were delighted to welcome Jonathan & Sarah Pitts, the Salvation Army Officers for Basingstoke. They brought some unique and creative teaching about four different ‘Prayer Styles': The Sunbather, The Surfer, The Ice cream Seller and The Snorkeler. Which one are you?
When Metallica's “Black Album” was released in 1991 Glenn and I looked at each other with confusion and exclaimed “There's no Metallica in my Metallica!” Gone were the screaming vocals, the long overly complicated song structures and pissed off aggression. I had this same feeling again in 2021 with the release of Deafheaven's “Infinite Granite.” It was a far cry from their 2013 masterpiece “Sunbather” (their “Master of Puppets” if you will) and I was confused and a little bit sad though I quickly came around. Being unfamiliar with the band or either record, neither Glenn nor Rod endured such a burden so I thought, “let's get their unbiased take” by pitting the two records against each other in a VINYL CAGE MATCH and that's exactly what we did. The results surprised me. Turns out those guys have pretty good taste. This week, Andy is joined by Jack Shirley, owner and engineer at Atomic Garden Studios in Oakland, CA. He has engineered, produced and mastered records for a dynamic group of artists, everyone from Jeff Rosenstock to Deafheaven to Western Addiction and all sorts of bands in-between. Also a musician himself, Jack cut his teeth in the post-hardcore band Comadre, who released 4 albums in their tenure and toured all over the U.S. and Japan. Most recently, he has been performing with the bands Everybody Row and Dangers. As a producer and engineer, Jack Shirley tends to take a more hands off approach, not unlike another well known engineer/producer - Steve Albini. He tends to let the music come together more organically rather than spending a ton of time on production just for the sake of production, though he'll certainly offer his opinion when asked for it. There have been several albums that he has worked on that have landed on a grip of 'Best Of' lists such as Deafheaven's Sunbather & New Bermuda, as well as Jeff Rosenstock's No Dream & POST-. Along with well over 50 albums on his resume, he has certainly earned his spot as a highly sought after producer within the punk, hardcore and metal scenes. It's almost Thanksgiving in the USA, and to celebrate we've brought you a rich bounty of big new releases! If you listen exclusively for the cryptic demos, don't worry -- we've got one of those for you, too. The Death Metal Guy fires up the festivities with something that knocked us both on our asses. If the somnabulant haze of 2013 gave us Sunbather (lmao), the miasmal tempest of 2020 could only give us.... Voidgazer. On this supermassively dense, furiously grinding record, Pneuma Hagion seriously up the brutality wars, fulfilling an ancient Terminus prophecy regarding the future of death metal. The only way to follow this is with something just as insane, and The Black Metal Guy does his damnedest with the return of Brazil's one and only powerlifting flamethrower death squad, GOATPENIS. We compare new tracks side-by-side with their old work, and try to figure out the secret of their unhinged energy. And then, for something completely different, as The Death Metal Guy introduces us to Black Horizon Ancient Belial, a new necro-symphonic BM project from Japan. BHAB fires off blistering mid-90s Swedish riffs over song structures that sprawl like ruined cathedrals.... but might have something to do with hardcore? Finally, we get to the thing you've all been waiting for: "what Terminus thinks of the new Inquisition record." Here, we lose all discipline, and a simple album review rapidly snowballs into an energetic back-and-forth on Inquisition's work thus far, their abiding influence by hard rock, and their central place in the canon of American black metal. Sick ultra-kvlt namedrops include AC/DC, Blink-182, and, uh, Bruce Springsteen? 00:00 - Introductory bullshitting 01:13 - Terminus News ft. We're talking about the halcyon days of 2013, a year that was full-to-bursting with exciting sounds from the underground, including DJ Rashad's Double Cup, Arca's mixtape &&&&&, and Deafheaven's Sunbather. It also felt like an unending onslaught of unprecedented Big Pop Moments, from Kanye West dismantling the avant-garde/pop divide with Yeezus, to Miley Cyrus sparking conversations about cultural appropriation with her hip-hop-inspired Bangerz, to Beyoncé reinventing the album cycle with the surprise-drop of her self-titled record in December. 2013 feels like another universe today (this was, after all, just the start of Obama's second term), but it also marked a sea change for the industry and music culture as a whole—one that this week's guest, veteran music journalist Larry Fitzmaurice, has been spending the past few months teasing apart in "The Year that Everything Changed," a serialized essay series for his excellent Last Donut of the Night Substack. On this week's episode, we reflect on 2013 as a year that the Internet would transform every aspect of music as we knew it, from the way it sounded, to how it was released, to the media's role in covering it.Read more by Larry: Last Donut of the Night Tame Impala, Chillwave, and Other Dispatches from the Vibe Generation19 Thoughts on Radiohead's In RainbowsWe've Got a File on You: Thurston MooreFollow Larry on Twitter. In this episode, I speak with Jack Shirley, a musician, an audio engineer, producer, and owner of The Atomic Garden studio in Oakland California. Jack is probably best known for his work with the band, Deafheaven, whose sophomore album, Sunbather was named Best New Music by Pitchfork. He has also recorded and produced bands like Loma Prieta, Gouge Away, Joyce Manor and countless others, including my band, Jeromes Dream. He was a founding member of the punk band Comadre and now plays guitar in Dangers! We talk about his beginnings with recording, the Oakland punk scene, work/life balance, and using ACDC's Back In Black as a sonic reference point for all his recordings. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/microspy/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/microspy/support

STP 32: Sunbather by Deafheaven - First Impressions by String Theory Podcast
"I don't know", laughed Deafheaven vocalist and founding member George Clarke when asked what he thought prompted the surprise crossover success of their sophomore album Sunbather. "We got really lucky. It was such a crazy, exciting time and I think that a lot of people felt like what we were doing was fresh and I think that resonated more than anything".That album propelled Deafheaven into a world that saw it acclaimed as one of the best received albums of 2013 throughout the United States. The response saw their fan base swell and interest peak, but Clarke says at the time the band were merely content to improve on debut Roads to Judah."I remember just thinking this is what we've worked up to", he said. "Up to this point this is the best version of oursleves, but we were also very nervous. We've always been a little bit self - doubting and a little bit cautious and we were just scared and excited. When it started rolling and people began to hear it and seeing the response for the first time, then it felt real and exciting".In the full interview George discusses the upcoming tour, last years album Ordinary Corrupt Human Love, the different musical direction the band took with it, their feelings on the direction, the fans reaction, the early days of the band, what they were trying to achieve musically in the beginning and now, how the band has changed musically over the years and more.
Marty and Kris are back with another heater! Episode 3 is all about 2013. We start with tackling Marty’s birthday weekend exploits (0:50) Kris gives Marty a birthday gift (4:40) Marty visiting the Cranbrook art museum in Detroit and checking out the Punk Graphics exposition (11:10) Breaking down the year of 2013 in music and what was happening on the billboard charts (22:46) Marty reveling in how much he hates Florida-Georgia Line (30:51) and Kris’s old band getting inexplicably booked for hip hop night at a country bar in Temple, Texas (39:20). After some earth shattering and controversial opinions on Macklemore and Katy Perry, it’s time to lock in with Kris’s pick. Vampire Weekend’s critically acclaimed third album, Modern Vampires of the City (1:09:09) Followed by Marty’s pick, Deafheaven’s black metal by way of shoegaze masterpiece, Sunbather (2:00:02). Don’t sleep on the MVP’s of music nerd-dom!
This summer, California's boundary-pushing post-metal band Deafheaven will be releasing their long awaited fourth record, Ordinary Corrupt Human Love, on ANTI- records (July 13th). The band will be out on the road for the rest of this year touring the new material. Catch them when they come through your neck of the woods. I had a beer with Deafheaven singer George Clarke behind Vancouver's Rickshaw Theatre the last time they were in my hometown. We watched a rat gang war erupt in the alley as we sipped local brews and I teased George, complaining about how long Deafheaven songs tend to be--too long for radio edits! Which band did George need to make sure was on the guestlist that night and why? What's it like to play music on Ketamine? How do Deafheaven piece together the different parts of their long songs? What's George's relationship with his audience when the fans need to seek out what he's saying in the songs (because of his vocal style)? What were the core struggles George was dealing with on the band's third record, New Bermuda? Why are metal fans so passionate about the genre? What do George and Stéphane from Alcest have long conversations about? What's the funniest mean thing that George has read about himself? What does Burt Bacharach have to do with anything? You'll have to listen to find out. Tracks played on the radio edit of the show... 1) Deafheaven, New Bermuda (2015) "Come Back" 2) Deafheaven, Sunbather (2013) "Dream House" 3) Deafheaven, New Bermuda (2015) "Brought to the Water" NO songs CANCON

Time was in the early days of the Internet there weren't many options for finding new music. However once better bandwidth came about the Internet became a wonderful and strange place indeed. Where else could one find a Symphonic Metal Opera album about My Little Pony (that's actually really good)? And where else could you find more a seemingly endless source of metal music from talented bands like Napalm Strike, Obsidian Throne, Wildernessking, Old Wainds, Lycanthia, Maniac Butcher, and the inimitable deafheaven? Fortunately you don't have to go searching for all of these bands on the Internet and can add a sampling of each to your collection with just a simple click or via your podcatcher. How times have changed indeed.
