Atone has its roots in the idea of reconciliation and harmony. It grew out of the Middle English phrase at on meaning “in harmony,” a phrase echoed in current expressions like “feeling at one with nature.” When atone joined modern English in the 16th century, it meant “to reconcile,” and suggested the restoration of a peaceful and harmonious state between people or groups. Today, atone specifically implies addressing the damage—or disharmony—caused by one's own behavior.

Craig Bellamy, the man at the helm of this sustained success, who has made 22 out of 23 finals series since being appointed as Head Coach, will coach the Storm to both his and the club's 11th Grand Final appearance in 23 seasons. That's on average a staggering Grand Final appearance every 2 years. As the man himself often has said and reiterated it post game "Grand Finals are hard to make, they're even harder to win". Nothing is guaranteed. Melbourne will renew hostilities with the NRL Club they were born out of in the Brisbane Broncos. The rivalry started in 1998 and has grown ever since, with inaugural CEO, Football Manager and Captain in John Ribot, Chris Johns and the 'Brick with eyes' in Glenn Lazarus being Broncos alumni, Bellyache being a former assistant coach at Brisbane, to the pair facing off in the 2006 Grand Final and the dominance Storm have had over the Broncos in recent years. But all that accounts for nothing as a Grand Final is opportunity both teams will be not wanting to waste - no more than Melbourne, who are ruing the missed chance of being crowned Premiers last season. Will that be at the back of the players mind as they prepare for Sunday's clash? Q. What sounds or feelings did you draw upon when gathering inspiration for this mix, and what listening environments could you imagine it being best enjoyed in? A. I've always been drawn to uplifting sounds, but I also love deep, percussive music and melancholic minor key melodies, which I think there's a lot of in this mix. Hopefully a nice journey to drift into and daydream with :) I really wanted this mix to be a sort of homage to the sound of MDC and the AU music community (as I hear it), which I connect with deeply. I find it so playful, psychedelic and beautiful. It definitely took me a while to untangle this, especially knowing it was for one of the most goated series out there… One that's inspired me time and time again. Personally, my favorite place to test mixes is on my bike. Maybe not the safest spot to zone out, but it's become part of my post recording ritual. Q. Are there any songs in the mix that you were especially excited to share, and what is it about these tracks that resonate with you so much? A. Atone's "Lost & Found"! I became obsessed with Tonal Ocean's Atone Special after it aired on NTS last year. Atone is, of course, an Australian project from the mind of Andrew Fitzgerald. I've listened to that mix countless times. "Atonement" is really just such a perfect record to me. I played "Lost & Found" last year at a festival that Doc Tom and CZ Wang curated called In The Open. It's still one of my favorite sets I've ever played and a memory I will cherish forever... I felt people really locking in during it and I was surrounded by some of my closest friends too… Music & friendship - truly nothing better than it. Q. Tell us about the evolution of Tranquilamente Radio on The Lot Radio, you play such a wide variety of beautiful music on the show, do you approach each show with a theme of sorts or just let things flow naturally? A. It's wild to think that I've been involved with radio in one shape or another for over a decade at this point... Through so many changes, radio in its different iterations has remained the only constant. When I started the show on The Lot Radio almost five years ago, it was deep during the pandemic and I wanted to foster a space for more laidback, at-home listening music. The inspiration for the title of the show was the Pacific Ocean - thinking about oceans as connectors of all these beautiful ~music waves~ around the world. I have done some themed shows over the years - I do an indie rock special every year, as a nod to my roots and to what I was playing back at KCSB, a college radio station in California where everything started. I also did a Canto-pop special a while back with some music I grew up listening to. More recently, I did a Music From Memory special that I really enjoyed, using the opportunity to really dive deep into everything that's come out from that label. I definitely want to keep doing more of that. I find it exciting that even though the show is pretty eclectic, it's developed a sound of its own. I definitely have a predilection for weirdo, left-field music and I love that the show can be a platform where me and my guests are encouraged to explore different sounds beyond the club. Sunday, February 23, 2025 – Today’s message is titled “Living in Obedient Love” as we continue our study on 1 John, focusing on 1 John 2:1-6. As the title suggests, the word “living” implies a daily exercise or progression. John teaches that the life of a Christian is one of progress, moving from striving not to sin but recognizing that if one does sin, God has a plan for forgiveness, provided one understands the role of Jesus as their advocate in God’s court of heavenly justice. I realize I just said a lot that you may not fully understand, and that’s okay because that’s what this message is about. We will discuss what an “advocate” is and their vital role. Scripture shows us that both the Holy Spirit and Jesus bear the title of advocate. Both are essential, bringing sinful mankind back into a just and holy relationship with a Holy and Just God. However, they differ in function and location, and we will explain that. The end result of learning to live in “obedient love” is that we obey Jesus' commands not because we “have to” or because we “need to” but because we “want to.” When we reach that stage in our mature Christian walk, we can experience the Joy of the Lord as our strength, living a fulfilled life now while looking forward to a rewarding and joyful eternity. OPENING ILLUSTRATION: I recently watched a thing on Dietrich Bonhoeffer, do you know about him? He was a pastor and theologian during WWII from Germany. As Hitler was rising to power preachers were literally saying he was sent by Jesus to the church and to Germany. Bonhoeffer was actually able to escape to America but after getting here he said he had to go back to Germany because how could he help the church rebuild what she was supposed to be if he had abandoned her during that time frame? He went back and was a part of a failed assassination attempt on Hitler-Valkeryie. Bonhoeffer and thousands of others were arrested and put to death for their resistance to Hitler and for helping smuggle Jewish people out of Germany. Here's my question: Why in the world would someone give something so costly as their life to the cause of Christ? I think it's a fantastic question at Christmas… And it feels ridiculous, doesn't it? Bonhoeffer's family didn't even know he had been sentenced and hung until weeks later. This guy died as what would seem a failure, as someone who died in anonymity. Why give your life for what seems like nothing? Isn't this the question we are all really asking? -I mean we ask it in little ways all the time. I want to look at an answer hidden in the Christmas story. b We are going to have to go back hundreds of years before that first Christmas to find the story.. SCRIPTURE: We have to go back SO far. It's not cold, but instead, it's hot - you need to picture Iraq because that's where we are landing. It was almost 500 years before Jesus would come into the world. But the land at this time isn't called Iraq, it's called Babylon. The King, Nebuchadnezzar had been having terrible dreams at night. You might know this story. He tells all of his magicians and enchanters that they need to interpret the dream, but that he will not tell them the dream. An impossible task. He orders all the wise men to be put to death - this includes a guy named Daniel who pleads for a chance to interpret the dream. The story is serious and would be terrifying. Daniel is answered by God and interprets the dream. After he does this, Nebuchadnezzar does this… Daniel 2:48 48 Then the king placed Daniel in a high position and lavished many gifts on him. He made him ruler over the entire province of Babylon and placed him in charge of all its wise men. b Daniel becomes the ruler of all the wise men of Babylon… There will be a change over of rulers in Babylon and Daniel will be considering the words of Jeremiah that said the Israelites would only be in Babylon for 70 years. As they are getting closer to that time, Daniel starts to pray to God. Daniel is visited by an angel - Gabriel is the same angel that appears to Mary… I want you to hear the word that God gives to this guy who is the ruler of the wise men of Babylon: Daniel 9:24-26 24 “Seventy ‘sevens'[c] are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish[d] transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the Most Holy Place.[e] 25 “Know and understand this: From the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One,[f] the ruler, comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,' and sixty-two ‘sevens.' It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench but in times of trouble. 26 After the sixty-two ‘sevens,' the Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing.[g] People who are way smarter than me have done the math to figure out when the seventy-sevens would occur. Notice the things said about this person who would come: This Messiah (the “Anointed One”) will: Put an end to sin (Priestly function) Atone for wickedness (Priestly function) Bring everlasting righteousness  (Priestly function) Seal up vision and prophecy (Prophetic function) Anoint the most Holy place (the temple) (Prophetic function) Be a ruler (King) Be put to death and have nothing b ILLUSTRATION: I grew up watching Sesame Street, they used to have this segment where they would sing “One of these things is not like the others, one of these things does not belong..” They'd show red balloons with a blue balloon. I used to think I was a brilliant genius because I'd be like, “The blue one, the blue one doesn't belong! … You can stop singing the song, I figured it out…” Listen, One of these things in Daniel's vision is not like the others. Did you notice it? That the Messiah would be put to death and have nothing… What in the world? How can that be? Let me tie some things together now… Does anyone know what direction Iraq is from Israel? B East Do you know another word for wise men? b Magi b One last thing… Did you know about 1,000 years before Daniel there was a prophet (Baalaam) from the region of Babylon who made this prophecy? Numbers 24:17 “I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel. Let me tie this together… Listen…. SCRIPTURE: Matthew 2:1-12 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” 3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born.5 “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: 6 “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.'” 7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared.8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.” 9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was.10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route. b Get this: There is a strong chance the magi that come to Jesus are men who have grown up in a tradition where they have learned from those who learned from Daniel… Did you see what these guys brought to Jesus? Gold (the gift for a king), Frankincense (incense used by priests), and Myrrh (oil used to anoint the dead). b “Kent, that's interesting, but how does this help answer the question: ‘Why in the world would someone give something so costly'” b Did you know some scholars have estimated the cost of these items at $4 million in today's money? b These guys came and worshipped Jesus at great cost to themselves… I think the reason Bonhoeffer was willing to give his life and why these men were willing to travel over great distances and at considerable cost to themselves was because of what Daniels vision said about this anointed one: [The Messiah would] put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness The reason someone like Bonhoeffer or these wise men are willing to give so much is because they gain so much more - eternal life! CLOSING ILLUSTRATION: Jenni and I have been watching "The Summit" like survivor on the side of a mountain. They have people do challenges - one they had to descend a cliff on a rope, but at some point, they had to let go of the rope to connect to a zip line. One of the guys did not want to let go of the rope - the rope he knew was solid, the rope had gotten him down the Cliff, and the rope hadn't failed him, but the rope couldn't get him off the wall. He had to let go of the rope, abandon it to trust something different - the zip line, that could take him down to solid ground. Following Jesus is much like this. Jesus' gift is absolutely free and doesn't cost you something in the sense that you have to pay for it or earn it. He gave it freely, but if you don't give up on the old way of life, you will never truly enter into His life. As long as you hold onto the rope that got you here, and it probably worked for some things. It worked to get you to where you are. It worked to make you a shrewd business owner, it worked to make you a revered coach, it worked to make you even the good father that you are. But it can't take you all the way. It can't take you to eternal life, it can't take you into peace and joy, it can't take you into freedom from sin. At some point it leaves you hanging there - it can't tell you your purpose in life, or create real lasting meaning. What we give to Jesus is to offer those things to Him and to let go of the old life for the new life He offers. Advent points to more than the baby Jesus. It points to One born to show us how to live, and to die to atone for the sin of humanity. We will consider the sacrificial cultus initiated by God for the people of Israel and how this sacrificial system was but a shadow of things in the heavens. God promised the nation Israel He would not forsake them. Even in their continued disobedience He remained faithful. God redeems humanity through the death of His Son, Jesus Christ, the perfect High Priest and sacrifice that the blood of bulls and sheep and goats could not be. Though Jesus was forsaken on the cross, His forsakenness removes the forsakenness of those of faith. Therefore, the old covenant is replaced by a newer and better covenant; not of outward signs but one written in our mind and on our heart.

1.      The claim is non-biblical, philosophical speculation.  This claim is not something argued or presented in the Bible. 2.      The Bible says exactly the opposite. The Bible says that Jesus had to be a man, a human being, not just a human nature, to bring about God's plan of redemption for humanity. God was at work in and through the man Jesus of Nazareth. Who the man Jesus was and is, and what he did, was necessary, sufficient and acceptable to God. Problems: The claim that Jesus had to be God to atone for sins is not only non-biblical, but it also leads to other, non-biblical, philosophical dead ends. What deity of Christ folks are claiming is a penal substitution theory of atonement: somebody, or something else, a substitute, had to bear the penalty for my sin.   And that penalty is death. The claim is that instead of me, somebody else had to die for my sin. My sin is worthy of death, so, unless someone pays the death penalty, I will die. If someone else pays the penalty, then I don't have to die. My sin is worthy of death, so that's why a death is required for justice. Someone had to pay the death penalty – so instead of me, Jesus, who had to be God, paid that death penalty.   Now again, this is not a biblical claim. It is man's philosophical speculation. And, I think that we can see that the Bible says something quite the opposite.   But even from a human or philosophical aspect, I think most people, if we think about it a little bit, can see the serious, non-biblical, theological, philosophical dead ends and inconsistencies with the claim.   Let's say I murder someone. The biblical penalty for murder is death. I deserve death. I've been convicted in a court of law by jurors and a judge and sentenced to death. But my friend, Mike, right as the judge is about to strike the gavel down and send me off to execution, Mike stands up in the courtroom and shouts “Wait! Stop!”.  I'll pay the penalty for Bill. Kill me instead!”   So, the judge says, “OK, the penalty for this crime is death. If you are willing to pay the penalty, come on over here. Executioners, take the handcuffs off Bill and put them on Mike. Mike, off to the electric chair. Bill, you are free to go!”  And everyone in the courtroom nods their head in agreement. That's fair. The penalty was paid. The judge kept the ancient laws of justice.    Nope. People realize such a tactic is perversion of justice, not a maintenance of justice.   For the “Jesus must be God to pay for sin” folks there is another step in their philosophical, non-biblical speculation. They start thinking: well, maybe one person could give his life to pay the penalty for another (even though they know that biblically – “the person who sins, he shall die” Eze. 18:20, even a father can't be penalized for the iniquity of his son). But our situation is not just one person for one person. The deity of Christ philosopher thinks, “Whoa, to pay the penalty for all sinners, for millions and billions of sinners, Jesus would have to be eternal God to be enough to do that”.   God died (again, in direct contradiction to the Scriptures). In the Bible God is immortal and does not die. Well, not all of God died. Only one person of God died. So God did but God did not die.   “And death is only the separation of the soul from the body. One person of God, or the soul/spirit of that one person, had taken on a human nature.
