Na het uitreiken van de Osmium Awards denken podcastpresentatoren Niels en Pim eindelijk even tevreden achterover te kunnen leunen. Maar niets blijkt minder waar wanneer ze 's ochtends de krant openslaan. Tot hun verbazing lezen ze dat Helmut Lotti plots het middelpunt is van twee culturele veldslagen. In Nederland zouden tributebands de popsector uithollen, terwijl in België specifiek het btw-tarief op rockconcerten omhoog dreigt te gaan. Is onze held straks in Nederland niet meer welkom op het podium, om in België noodgedwongen alleen nog klassieke aria's te brengen? Osmium - de zwaarste podcast in het Nederlands - aarzelt geen moment en kruipt achter de microfoon om Helmut te hulp te schieten. Er valt namelijk best wat ijskoud water over de verhitte discussies te gieten. Is de opmars van tributebands een verdringing van "echte" muziek of houdt het juist de begroting van poppodia overeind? En is er wel een onderscheid te maken tussen haute couture en low-brow vertier? Echter, terwijl politici en opiniemakers elkaar in de haren vliegen, dreigt er iets veel belangrijkers onopgemerkt voorbij te gaan: Converge brengt voor het eerst in negen jaar tijd een nieuw album uit. Is de band die aan de wieg stond van deze podcast nog steeds urgent of is het meer bezig met het plannen van zijn eigen begrafenis? Wellicht is tegen die tijd het glas van Osmium al leeggegoten. Als er één term is die de productie van Osmium kan omschrijven, dan is het wel doorzettingsvermogen. Van het maken van planningen tot het bewerken van afleveringen, totdat de zelfopgelegde (en discutabele) kwaliteitsstandaard is bereikt: niets komt presentatoren Pim en Niels vanzelf aanwaaien. Maar hard werk loont. De beloning der beloningen volgt traditiegetrouw in de eerste aflevering van het nieuwe jaar, wanneer de inmiddels beroemde en beruchte Osmium Awards worden uitgereikt. Het duo heeft, met hulp van de luisteraars, wederom een verzameling categorieën bij elkaar geharkt die met elke editie absurder wordt. En dat betekent: een feestje voor de presentatoren (en wellicht de luisteraar), een minder plezante aangelegenheid voor de ontvangende bands. Deze prijzen zouden echter niet bestaan zonder het monnikenwerk dat eraan voorafgaat, verricht door Pim. Mister jaarlijst kent doorgaans een drukke staart van het jaar en giet onuitputtelijk bloed, zweet en tranen in het verzamelen van alle ingezonden stemmen en het opmaken van de eindscore, die dient als voedingsbodem voor de daaropvolgende ceremonie. Ook al is die doorgaans ver te zoeken, de informatieve waarde van de zwaarste podcast van Nederland wordt dus niet uit het oog verloren. Ook dit jaar worden de lijst en daarmee het stemgedrag van lezers en luisteraars onderworpen aan een kritische, doch rechtvaardige analyse. Brandende vragen als: "Wat is de beste maand om een album uit te brengen?" en "Kunnen we niet allemaal wat minder black metal luisteren?" worden daarbij niet geschuwd. Traditiegetrouw staat de laatste aflevering van het jaar bij Osmium - de zwaarste podcast in het Nederlands - in het teken van de persoonlijke jaarlijstjes. Ook 2025 vormt daarop geen uitzondering, maar eerst moet een veel urgenter voorval besproken worden. De Noorse blackmetalband Slagmaur kondigde onlangs een nieuw album aan met een promotiestunt die heel de metalwereld in zijn greep hield. De bandleider General Gribbsphiiser zou namelijk met zijn boezemvriend Snorre Ruch (bekend van Thorns) spoorloos verdwenen zijn in de bossen. Zware Metalen werd als enige metalwebsite vooraf ingeseind over dit "ritueel" en raakte verwikkeld in een koortsdroom van verontwaardiging, fake news en zelfoverschatting. Luister mee voor een kijkje achter de schermen! In de jaarlijstjes van Osmium gelukkig geen toneel, al zou je de muzieksmaak van beide babbelaars wél een sociaal experiment kunnen noemen. De één struint vergeefs alle sludge- en post-metalreleases af in de hoop de nieuwe Cult Of Luna te ontdekken, en de ander ziet zichzelf als een eclectische extremist die geen genres volgt maar energie, intensiteit en eigenheid. Mocht je niet willen dat die wansmaak doorsijpelt in de Zware Metalen publieksjaarlijst, dan is dit het moment om in actie te komen. Op maandag 15 december openen namelijk de stembussen van de ZM Jaarlijst 2025! Maar dat is niet het enige huiswerk dat je meekrijgt. Een jaarafsluiting zonder uitreiking van Osmium Awards is niets meer dan het verstrijken van een dag. En dat gebeurt elke dag al. Laat dus van je horen en stuur de meest (of minst) urgente categorieën in waar een prijs aan gekoppeld moet worden. Des te slechter het idee, des te groter de eer! Na twee afleveringen vergezeld te zijn door gasten die overduidelijk positiever en intelligenter zijn, keren presentatoren Pim en Niels in de vijfenzeventigste aflevering van Osmium terug naar de gebaande paden. En dat betekent: azijnpissen over een festivalbezoek waaraan ze zich vrijwillig onderwerpen. Waar men in de oktoberaflevering van de zwaarste podcast in het Nederlands een verslag van vaste prik Soulcrusher zou verwachten, wordt die traditie dit jaar doorbroken. De duistere concertzalen van Nijmegen worden verruild voor het zonnige Pier 15-skatepark in Breda, waar Coffey Fest plaatsvindt. Zoals je mag verwachten, ontbreekt daarbij een ontleding van de volledige line-up niet (behalve headliner John Coffey zelf). Maar aangezien het Venn-diagram van John Coffey-luisteraars een vrij minimale overlap vertoont met de Osmium-kneuzenbrigade, ontpopt het duo zich al snel tot fashionpolitie en deelt het gele en rode kaarten uit aan de verheven New Kids-esthetiek, het merk Carhartt en de gloednieuwe stijl "bandkubisme". En dat alles natuurlijk terwijl een van de presentatoren zelf een Decathlon-afritsbroek, Patagonia-jas, merinowollen thermokleding en categorie A-wandelschoenen draagt. Doe wat voor een ander, dan doet de ander wat voor jou. Een veel gehoord gezegde in de metalscene. Dat is exact wat Bjorn van Eeuwijk moet hebben gedacht toen hij werd gevraagd om aan te schuiven in de nieuwste aflevering van Osmium, de zwaarste podcast in het Nederlands. Je zou hem kunnen kennen van Bjorn's Beton Uur, zijn radioshow op KINK Distortion waarin hij twee maal per week nieuwe, oude, internationale en lokale metal draait. Het Osmium-duo mocht in het verleden al eens aanschuiven tijdens één van die uitzendingen, en nu zijn de rollen dus omgedraaid. Bjorn vertelt uitgebreid over het vak radio maken, zijn connectie met de metalscene en de rol die radio daarin speelt. Tevens wordt er stilgestaan bij gatekeeping gedrag en wordt er gepraat over de toekomst van metal. Is er hoop voor dit genre of staan we stil? Amai, het is weer tijd voor het jaarlijkse uitstapje over de grens! Na een bezoek aan Damnation Festival in Engeland en Rockstadt Extreme Fest in Roemenië zoekt Osmium - de zwaarste podcast in het Nederlands - het deze editie dichter bij huis. Het Belgische Alcatraz pronkt in 2025 met flinke namen als Kreator, Extreme en Machine Head op de line-up, maar het zijn kwaliteitsbands als Messa, Alkerdeel, Wytch Hazel en Drowning Pool die Osmium over de streep weten te trekken. Alcatraz wordt al jaren geroemd om zijn gezellige sfeer, vlotte organisatie en leuke aankleding. Hoog tijd dus dat Niels en Pim eens langs komen om de sfeer te verzieken. De goede (en minder goede) herinneringen bespreken ze uitgebreid in deze aflevering. Maar gelukkig doen ze dat niet alleen! Na vijftig opnames zonder gast in de podcast komt daar abrupt verandering in. Redacteur Friso schrijft voor Zware Metalen het festivalverslag en wil het podcastduo heus vergezellen in Tourcoing, de zielloze voorstad van Lille waar Osmium vanwege haar liefde voor aftandsheid verblijft. Daar krijgt hij al snel spijt van en als vergelding besluit hij de geloofwaardigheid van beide opiniemakers te ondergraven. Zodoende horen we hoe in recordtempo rode flessen wijn verdwijnen, wie het gevecht om de keukenweegschaal wint en waarom rappers geld op hun geslachtsdeel gooien.
