Ep. 120 Black Sabbath - Master of Reality - Review & Reaction! Black Sabbath's Master of Reality, released in 1971, is a landmark album in heavy metal history. It took the band's signature doom-laden sound to a new level, emphasizing slower, heavier, and more menacing riffs. This album was crucial in shaping the doom, sludge, and stoner metal subgenres, influencing countless bands like Sleep, Kyuss, and Electric Wizard. Tony Iommi's down-tuned guitar (due to a factory accident that damaged his fingertips) contributed to an even darker and thicker sound, making Master of Reality one of the heaviest records of its time. Master of Reality laid the groundwork for multiple metal subgenres, particularly doom metal, sludge metal, and stoner rock. Its raw, down tuned heaviness, combined with themes of war, religion, drugs, and despair, resonated with generations of metalheads. The album is frequently cited as one of the greatest metal records of all time, and its influence can be heard in the works of bands like Metallica, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains. This album solidified Black Sabbath's role as the forefathers of heavy metal, proving that music could be both devastatingly heavy and deeply introspective. Over 50 years later, Master of Reality remains essential listening for any rock or metal fan.

BLACK SUMMER concludes with this special album exchange! We begin by choosing two Black Metal-related albums recommended by listeners from TRAPPO's Black Metal Mail Bag: "Orphans Of The Black Sun" by Mütterlein & "Fear Not The Dark nor The Sun's Return" by Vulgarite. Then we conclude with a pair of personal picks: "Dopethrone" from Electric Wizard & "Blight Witch Regalia" from Cicada the Burrower. BLACK SUMMER might be wrapping up, but the conversation never has to end. Just head to the official TRAPPO blog and leave a comment. It's that easy. Tell us what you think about the music featured on this week's episode. Share your thoughts on Black Metal in general. CLICK HERE to visit the blog. You could also send us an email if you're feeling a little more verbose. Just CLICK HERE to do that. We know you won't, but the option is there. We always appreciate your feedback. Ready to feel old? Remember the early 90s? Well, as of this year, 1993 is 30 effin' years old! Wow! Times flies when you're rocking and rolling. So we figured we'd do a deep dive into three decades ago and discover it wasn't all Seattle, flannel and "hard alternative". The year had a number of amazing albums, band debuts and news stories that rocked Metaldom. Musically, we have a stack of wax from Nile, Mayhem, Propaghandi, Cancer, Reagan Youth, 1349, Bestial Warlust, Electric Wizard and Funeral Mist. Horns Up and Stay Healthy! In 2020, Dan Franklin wrote one of the best books I've ever read about the caustic enigma that is heavy metal. It was called - because why call it anything else - Heavy, and even within a corner of music book publishing that is saturated with said subject matter, it stood alone as definitive and hugely insightful. I finished the book excited about what Dan might do next. The answer is Come My Fanatics: A Journey Into The World of Electric Wizard, a new take on Dorset doom pioneers Electric Wizard. Conceived with the full cooperation of the band, published by the ever-impressive White Rabbit Books and unleashed upon the world on June 22nd, it is a brilliantly told story about a brilliant heavy metal band. I invite you to lose yourself in the strange and unsettling world of Electric Wizard - but first, to meet your tour guide... Motherslug is the bastard child of Sleep and Electric Wizard after a night of drinking and drugging with Neurosis and Kyuss, very heavy stuff! The group's gargantuan sound must be heard to be believed, which is why guitarist and riff lord Regan was asked to testify on the show. In this chat, we dive deep into the mechanics behind the group's monstrous sound and have a grand old time celebrating their killer new album, Blood Moon Blues.
Dome Metal outfit Electric Wizard changed the game with Dopethrone! Many think of this as the greatest doom or sludge metal record ever. Electric Wizard used literature, turmoil, and drug addiction to fuel them towards genius. Rae and KP explore the depths to which the record sinks and introduce a new segment with an old friend of the show!
No new chapter this week; instead, Diary of Doom is putting out one of its previously Patreon-exclusive episodes in which Dylan delves into the deeper catalogs of doom, stoner, and sludge bands that aren't Electric Wizard, Sleep, or Eyehategod. We've got a few more of these that we will be putting out over the coming months and hope to do more down the line. From the original post: The first deep dive chapter chronicles the discography of Cape Fear sludge band, Sourvein. Dylan and frequent guest, August West, dissect the band from their dirty southern roots to their current aqua-sludge themes. Albums covered: Sourvein (2000) Will to Mandle (2002) Emerald Vulture (2005) Ghetto Angel (2008) Imperial Bastard (2008) Black Fangs (2011) Aquatic Occult (2016) This episode was originally released on Jan. 1, 2022.

In this themed episode, Chris and Ryan pick their favorite records that remind them of the smell like their metal head older brother's bedroom in "Dude, I'm like, so high right now". First, Chris' pick is the classic stoner metal record Electric Wizard's Dopethrone. Then, after they burn through that, they (metaphorically) load up a bowl of more classic stoner metal and talk Ryan's pick Sleep's landmark record Dopesmoker.
This month we're all meeting up in the year 2000 to hang out in the Millenium dome, play Timesplitters on the PS2, & try to avoid getting sued by Metallica for downloading Master Of Puppets on Napster. We'll also be talking about wind instruments fashioned from root vegetables, uttery brilliant but thoroughly depressing movies, & we speculate whether Thom Yorke was turning up at every recording studio in the world in 2000. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Ian's wife Lydia, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them to Colin's wife Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. Helen also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - A Perfect Circle, AFI, Antony & The Johnsons, At The Drive In, Badly Drawn Boy, Belle & Sebastian, Bjork Ft. Thom Yorke, Bright Eyes, Cave In, Cinerama, The Cure, Darude, Deftones, earthtone9, Electric Wizard, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, PJ Harvey ft Thom Yorke, Isis, Merzbow, Misery Loves Co., Shellac, The Smashing Pumpkins, Snapcase, Radiohead, Sugababes, Teenage Fanclub, Ulver, VNV Nation, The White Stripes, & Yo La Tengo. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows - 1st place - 20 points 2nd place - 18 points 3rd place – 16 points 4th place – 14 points 5th place – 12 points 6th place – 9 points 7th place – 7 points 8th place – 5 points 9th place – 3 points 10th place -1 point Hosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey B Guest starring Helen Jackson-Brown. I don't think it can get any heavier than this! I spoke to my friend Clayton Burgess of the legendary Satan's Satyrs and Electric Wizard about all things heavy and man let me tell you, it was everything I thought it would be! Born and raised in Virginia and quickly became obsessed with groups such as Black Flag, Sabbath, Pentagram and all the underground heavies I know the listeners love and appreciate. Burgess would soon start his own group, Satan's Satyrs, and would go on to record the first album all by himself and even playing all the instruments himself before it became an official group that would go on to release half a dozen incredible records before laying it to bed in 2019. Burgess joined the almighty Electric Wizard during that period and well... the rest is history! Justin Greaves of Crippled Black Phoenix joins the podcast family this week. Not only do we talk about Crippled Black Phoenix, it's formation, it's troubles, it's resurrection, and a new album; we go even further back. Back past Electric Wizard, past Armour Of God, past Hard To Swallow, and even past Iron Monkey. We go all the way back to his dad's record shop and how that informed his desire to create music that he hadn't heard yet. We do discuss all those bands and more, though, so don't worry. YouTube Video: https://youtu.be/hlyeb_JlvpA In this doom metal guitar lesson I teach you the entire rhythm section and solo concepts from Electric Wizard's Dopethrone. The song is broken down into its main riffs, each demonstrated and explained in full detail. B Standard Tuning: B-E-A-D-F♯-B The song is played in the key of B Minor and it's riffs utilize elements from the B Natural Minor Scale {R, M2, b3, p4, p5, b6, b7} along with the B Blues Scale {R, b3, p4, b5, p5, b7} with the addition of the Major Third, M3, and the Flat Second, b2, from the Phrygian Dominant Scale {R, b2, M3, p4, p5, b6, b7}
