My guest on the podcast this week is Aaron Weaver of Wolves In The Throne Room. An interesting and wise man - we talk about the band and their impact on the black metal scene, as well as his unorthodox utilization of technology for producing that is modern but still seems on brand for the genre. We also talk about ghosts and Lars Ulrich... obviously. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
My guest on the podcast this week is Aaron Weaver, drummer and founding member of one of my favourite black metal bands: Wolves In The Throne Room. A SUPER interesting and wise man, we talk the band, magick, his unique living situation, Lars Ulrich, and much more!

Evan Hopper of Quell returns to the podcast this week to talk about his new album, “All That Was And Will Never Be”. As is the standard for any of Evan's visits to the show, the conversation soon spins out into a myriad of other tangents, including our shared love of Danzig, death metal, his forays into the world of dating apps and much more. Then, on my weekly news rant, I give you my first impressions for new singles by The Amenta, Code, Myrkur, Wolves In The Throne Room, Suffocation and others. This week on Riff Worship, Austin & Dylan continue their plunge into the world of Swedish metal with Tribulation's 2018 opus 'Down Below': a vampiric, genre-bending masterclass in songwriting, atmosphere, and all things the riff. This episode we got to hang out with THREE metal guests! Chris Danacek (SKÁLA, Infera Bruo), Karl Chamberlain (SKÁLA, Alcyone) and Galen Baudhuin (Street Tombs, Aridus, Infera Bruo) joined us to discuss their current and upcoming projects. Chris shares his thoughts on the cathartic writing and recording process for his SKÁLA album, we get the low down on the "permanent hiatus" of Infera Bruo, Galen takes us inside his new one-man project Aridus, and Karl declares that no character will ever survive in his lyrics. After the interview, Karl and Galen stick around to talk news, new releases and what we've been listening to. Plus, Markisan dusts off two great solo records by Bruce Dickinson and Rob Halford, and makes them battle it out in a fun Metal Thunderdome. AND we feature the return of full songs to the podcast, including tracks from SKÁLA, Street Tombs and the exclusive, world premiere of the first Alcyone single, "Ensconcing Sorcery."
WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM drummer Aaron Weaver talks about the deep-rooted spirituality of the American black metal band he co-founded with his brother, Nathan. WITTR make iconoclastic (even for black metal) and often ritualistic music meant to evoke the forests and mountains around them in the Pacific Northwest. In this in-depth conversation, Aaron speaks candidly about his personal experiences and the evolution of his ideas. Listen to No-Prize From God: Playlist For the Podcast. Dreams of Consciousness Podcast Episode 219 features an interview with Falls of Rauros. On the surface, Falls of Rauros bear all the hallmarks of "cascadian black metal"; their blend of death/black, neo folk, and progressive rock bears many similarities to Agalloch and Wolves In The Throne Room, belying the the fact that the group is actually based in Portland, Maine (on the opposite side of the continent from their peers in the Pacific Northwest). I had an in-depth discussion about the band's egalitarian writing process with guitarist/vocalist Aaron Charles, guitarist/vocalist Jordan Guerette and bassist Evan Lovely (the band is completed by drummer Ray Capizzo), and accounting for any similarities they might have with other USBM bands. We also talked about whether the musical development on their latest release, Key to a Vanishing Future, can be described as "progressive". My thanks to Aaron, Jordan, and Evan for speaking with me, and to all of you for listening. ☩ LISTE LITURGIQUE ☩ 1. On this episode, number 42, myself and Aaron Weaver discuss his band Wolves In The Throne Room's latest album 'Primordial Arcana' along with the spiritual mindset he, his brother Nathan and guitarist Kody Keyworth apply to making their art. Since the bands first release in 2006 (Diadem Of 12 Stars) WITTR have made incredibly atmospheric and magickal black metal in the Cascadian scene of Americas north west...Very quickly we get into talking about the process of channelling art and music that rises as a current from the landscape they live within. We talk about rising through the Olympia Washington punk rock scene of the 90's, through to the recording of this newest record. Its a great episode and Aaron is a very cool and erudite musician and it was a pleasure to finally get to talk with an artist who's work I have loved and supported on my radio show for many years. The album is available now via Relapse Records / Century Media / Artemisia Records. Please go and listen now if you haven't already, it's really brilliant...

With seventh full length, Primordial Arcana (Relapse Records), Wolves In The Throne Room literally have nothing else to prove to anyone. They make their brand of atmospheric black metal for themselves and their own spirits and have gained a massive following since their inception in 2002 due to their extremely nature inspired and spiritually grounded music and the feeling surrounding each release that fans have come to know and love. And, Primordial Arcana is no different yet is its own spirit animal as well as possibly their best release yet. On the heels of the album's release, Buke had the chance to chat with drummer Aaron Weaver about the album and its nuances, nature and specifically a piece of it that relates to his upbringing and how it has informed not only his life but his musical choices, how preserving history is important and why, his experience at the Fire In The Mountains Fest and how amazing the Grand Tetons are, how it's been working with Kody Keyworth, and how he stays close to the earth and his interests in early ways of building and surviving. They also cover Aaron's influences and how he either opens up to them or shuts down pending where he is in the creative process for new music, his go to gas station foods, and his song pick off the new album. All this and so much more is covered in this amazing chat so dive in and enjoy.9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

The LGBT+ heavy metal podcast fondly recalls Mastodon's 'Bedazzled Fingernails', and why it spoke to our queer side in a brilliant way – even if it recalled some less happy things for one of our hosts.Defunct mathcore project Iwrestledabearonce are hauled out of metal's past, expressly for the purpose of explaining why their name becomes rather suggestive when viewed through the prism of gay slang.Plus this week's entries for the Hate Crew Gaybar jukebox are Primordial Arcana, the new album from atmospheric black metal masters Wolves In the Throne Room, and Colors II, the prog metal odyssey from Between The Buried And Me.So, as well as IWABO, HBFM visit HCGBs with WITTR and BTBAM.
Welcome to the week after The Big One! Following our monumental 666th episode, the music world celebrated another milestone. It was the 40th anniversary of the debut of MTV. Of course even in those early years MTV never meant much to Metal fans. Apart from the Headbanger's Ball, the only thing of interest was the fact that some of the coolest vids were constantly being barred from airplay. So we choose to "celebrate" EmptyV by giving these vids the once over. As well, Canada's "Loud As Hell" fest just went down. Our good buddy, and co host of our sister show "Wrestling Night In Canada", Dustin "Ducky" Maruca was there and gives his "On The Spot Report!" All this plus a metric fvck ton of cool tunage from Wolves In The Throne Room, Into Eternity, Despise You, Dead Kennedys, Cell, Krigsgrav and White Cowbell Oklahoma!! Horns Up and Stay Healthy! This Episode is sponsored by Trve Kvlt Coffee. Summon the coffee demons to possess yourself a cup today! Follow us on Twitter and Instagram.

Und … am 5.8. erscheint Ox Nr. 157 (jetzt vorbestellen!) mit AKNE KID JOE, AMYL AND THE SNIFFERS, DESCENDENTS, THE BRONX, DŸSE, Joey Cape, EGOTRONIC, NOMEANSNO (Teil 1), TOXOPLASMA, DIE LIGA DER GEWÖHNLICHEN GENTLEMEN, WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM und anderen: https://www.ox-fanzine.de/ox-157-kommt

Here is Dreams of Consciousness Podcast Episode 169, featuring an interview with Galen Baudhuin of Infera Bruo. With members spread out from New Mexico to New England, Infera Bruo might be the most literal representation of the expansiveness of the US black metal scene. I spoke with Infera Bruo founder/guitarist/vocalist Galen Baudhuin about the history of his band, and the creation of their latest album Rites of the Nameless. Galen also talked to me about what he learned from recording with Kurt Ballou, and his work with Trap Them and Wolves In The Throne Room. My thanks to Galen for speaking with me, and to all of you for listening. It was a surprise when Niklas Sundin left DARK TRANQUILLITY and started his new project MITOCHONDRIAL SUN. Even more surprising was the sound of this new project - no band, no vocals, but tons of electronical sounds. We talked to Niklas about his music and how it is produced, learned a lot about musical godfathers and how he thinks a live performance of MITOCHONDRIAL SUN should look like. He also told us why he left DARK TRANQUILLITY, his connection to the band today and his work as a graphic designer. MITOCHONDRIAL SUN is for fans of ULVER and WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM. And - of course - DARK TRANQUILLITY.
here We Live is the new album by Indianapolis based trio Chrome Waves who are made up of new drummer Dustin Boltjes, James Benson on bass/guitar/vocals, and Jeff Wilson on bass/guitars/synth/vocals. It is the follow-up to the 2019 debut full-length A Grief Observed, their split with industrial noise terrorists Gridfailure and The Cold Light Of Despair featuring covers of tracks by Nirvana, Nick Cave and Slowdive. The decision to cover Slowdive is as significant as naming the band after a Ride track, providing an important clue as to their influences. The band reformed in 2018 following a protracted period away. I first encountered Jeff Wilson’s work when I reviewed his excellent gothic/post-punk influenced Deeper Graves project, which like Where We Live, was released on his own Disorder Recordings label. The beautiful art/layout was done by Brian Sheehan/Legerdemain and has a more abstract approach, compared to the organic natural themes of previous releases. Hallow Dreams opens with a violin led intro (courtesy of Christopher Brown) before some blistering black metal kicks in, the drumming is especially impressive and any concerns about new drummer Dustin’s ability are quickly blown out of the water. The track soon settles into a mid to low paced range with Jeff’s intensely emotional vocals accompanying it. The Classical influences remind me a little of Emperor’s later more grandiose works and there is also a progressive post-rock sound too. Quite a heady, yet effective mixture of influences for an opening track. Gazing Into Oblivion starts slowly and recalls the gothic intonations of Jeff’s Deeper Graves project, as well as the sense of drama you’d expect from Sisters of Mercy. It’s a driving number chocked full of dynamic aggression and brooding melody. A killer track. New Skin marks the halfway mark and is a slice of shoegaze centered loveliness with atmospherics in spades. Jeff eschews his black metal shrieks altogether here and sings in a style not too dissimilar to Mark Gardener from Ride. What Chrome Waves do so well is respectfully acknowledge black metal’s heritage while simultaneously experimenting beyond the boundaries of the genre… Spoonfed is a little longer at over eight minutes long and has more of a depressive doom vibe, along the lines of a more restrained Type O Negative but without that band’s trademark self-deprecating sense of humour. Penultimate track On The Precipice harks back to the Norwegian scene ala Mayhem with some chunky riffing and harsh vocals before the melodic choruses take you by surprise. There is a distinctive Post-Metal edge that you’d expect from Isis, Neurosis, Rosetta and other bands of that ilk. Final track Where You Live is the longest on the record at nearly eleven minutes and lives up to the expression ‘saving the best till last’. The track has epic written all over it, a slow and steady build up, the plaintive cries from Jeff and the waves of distortion that recalls Ride’s Vapour Trail. A track that strongly highlights a sense of finality. If the likes of Deafheaven, Wolves In The Throne Room and Alcest appeal to you, then there’s a very good chance you’ll appreciate this album. However I would argue that even a black metal purist like me will find something appealing about it too, opposed to the aforementioned groups, as it feels more natural and less ‘hip’ (in the Pitchfork sense). What Chrome Waves do so well is respectfully acknowledge black metal’s heritage while simultaneously experimenting beyond the boundaries of the genre. This is another superb release from Jeff Wilson and will ensure I will be staying glued to Disorder Recordings output for the foreseeable future.
☩ LISTE LITURGIQUE ☩ 1. ARGUSS (Ukraine) - Ashes of the Future 2. This week me and my regular co-host Cody are tired of all the garbage in metal. Marduk, Cirith Ungol, Meshuggah, Decapitated, just throw it all in the trash fire. Then, more positivity. Cody is really excited about Psycho Las Vegas, which leads to him checking out Wolves In The Throne Room. There's a new Ihsahn song, and I got into Krosis, and tried to get into the new Panopticon album. Then we talk about Death, Gruesome and Cist. Finally, we go over this video comparing Mike Portnoy and Mike Mangini, and what the loss of Portnoy means for Dream Theater. Then, cool people time with A Quiet Place, The Knick, Unsane, The Exorcist (TV show) and more. Enjoy!
