Dan & Billy welcome back longtime friend & Nostalgia Test Podcast Allstar Jeremy Madson for the final episode of the Metallica Eras journey, The Legacy Era: Death Magnetic, Hardwired...to Self-Destruct, & 72 Seasons and put them to the ultimate test—THE NOSTALGIA TEST! “That's an interesting comparison, Metallica to The Beatles [...] The Beatles, depending on how you count them, were only around for, like, six or eight years, right? And they were hyper prolific. They put out all their shit, and that was basically Metallica from however you wanna measure it, from, from Kill 'Em All up to Black or even through Justice, right? They cranked out just, like, absolute pinnacle, God-level material. But instead of, you know, tearing each other down and going off and doing their own thing, they just decided to stick around.” -Jeremy Madson Dan, Billy, & Jeremy talk about the most recent albums of Metallica's long and confusing career, Death Magnetic (2008), Hardwired... to Self-Destruct (2016), and 72 Seasons (2023). They try to figure out why Metallica made these albums, if they should've stopped after Death Magnetic, Metallica's consistent cover art fails since Load, and why does Metallica insist on recording songs longer than 3.5 minutes at this point. Is Death Magnetics' mixing really a problem, especially after Saint Anger or is it just some bulls**t to complain about? Their conversation inevitably returns to the influence of Lars on the band's trajectory after the death of Cliff Burton and how the band might have imploded anyway if Cliff didn't die. At the end of the episode, and this is an epic one so hang on and hangout, the guys give their individual rankings of all the studio albums from worst to best (minus LuLu, Garage Inc, & the live albums) and Jeremy creates an aggregate scoring of all 11 albums. We hope you enjoy this final episode. Grab your concert T's, your closets Metal friends, push yourself through the pit, and let's scream our heads off together. Come chill! Tara Erickson & Roxy Striar take on Darren Aronofsky's haunting 2000 psychological drama Requiem for a Dream, a visceral exploration of addiction, obsession, and the human need for connection. The film stars Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club, Morbius) as Harry Goldfarb, a young man chasing quick fixes; Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind, Labyrinth) as his girlfriend Marion Silver, whose dreams are consumed by desperation; Marlon Wayans (White Chicks, Respect) as Harry's best friend Tyrone C. The emotional, some say spiritual, effect music has on us is notoriously difficult to put into words. It's sort of like analyzing why something is funny. The reality ever exceeds our verbal grasp. Why are minor chords sad and majors happy? Why, when you hear a song from your childhood is there a superglue of emotion attached, bringing you instantly to those moments long ago? This week's guest is one of the greats in the choral music world. If you enjoy music with a lush, cinematic sound created for multiple voices on the exquisite side, Morten Lauridsen is your man. The most frequently performed American composer of choral music, Lauridsen is a National Medal of Arts recipient (2007), he was composer-in-residence of the Los Angeles Master Chorale (1994–2001), and has been a professor of composition at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music for more than 50 years. His work has been recorded on over 200 CDs including five with Grammy nominations. We're talking serious musical gravitas here. On November 11, 2018, a massive concert for international television is being held at the Brandenburg Gate in Germany to mark the centenary of the end of World War One. In addition to Welsh composer Karl Jenkins' Mass for Peace, the other piece selected is Lauridsen's beautiful Lux Aeterna. I predict not a dry eye on that night. You can imagine my surprise when, during the interview, the great man spontaneously began playing a portion of his classic O Magnum Mysterium to explain why the notes for the word “Virgo” ground the piece in a special way! In this interview, you will learn: Why every artist has to risk failure; as not trying guarantees failure How Lauridsen became a late bloomer as a composer, at age 50, and maybe how you can, too Why poetry deserves a massive revival The importance of stillness and quiet for human serenity and creativity The mysterious way in which music connects us to the divine Resources mentioned in this episode: O Magnum Mysterium performance Lux Aeterna performance Profound talk by director Karl Paulnack to music freshmen at Boston College Conservatory CD album, Morten Lauridsen: Lux Aeterna; Madrigali; Ave Maria; Ubi Caritas CD album streaming, Lauridsen: Mid-Winter Songs Connect with Morten: www.mortenlauridsen.net

O'Byrne, and Harry Connick Jr.Bug debuted at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival before being purchased by Lionsgate, which released the film the following year in May 2007. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its intensity, directing, acting, and take on paranoia, but were polarized about its writing, in particular the film's ending. Friedkin and Letts collaborated again as director and writer on the 2011 film Killer Joe.”NEXT WEEK: Singapore Sling (1990)Jon Nix's website: https://www.jonnixfilm.com/Jon Nix's Twitter: https://twitter.com/jonnixfilmJon Nix's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jonnixfilm/Website: http://www.bloodhauspod.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/BloodhausPodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/Email: bloodhauspod@gmail.comDrusilla's art: https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/Drusilla's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hydesister/Drusilla's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/drew_phillips/Joshua's website: https://www.joshuaconkel.com/Joshua's Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/joshuaconkel.bsky.socialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/Joshua's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/joshuaconkel

Metallica released their latest album on April 14, 2023 and we decided to give you a review of the album. Writing for the album began in 2020 during the pandemic shutdown and recording began in March of 2021 and finished in November of last year. The album was announced shortly thereafter on the Howard Stern show and the single “Lux Aeterna” was released that day. Joining us on the episode is Sklo who sat in recently when Chris Kaye was under the weather. So with that said, we've listened to all 12 songs and we're going to give you what we honestly think of this release, warts and all on this special episode of Debating Metal – The 72 Seasons Review. I had a week off in February, so while Shelley was at work one day, I spent part of my day on a Google Meet call with the wonderful Tony Boydell - designer of such games as Snowdonia, Lux Aeterna, Alubari: A Nice Cup of Tea, Race the Rails, and - of course - Scandaroon! We discuss his past designs, creating a brand new Museum of Board Games, and some of the games he's playing currently. It's a wide-ranging discussion - we had a great time, and hope you enjoy it! And if you're able to sponsor the podcast, you can do that in two ways: either on Patreon: www.patreon.com/garrettsgames OR by purchasing games from our list of games that need to find new homes: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/16ovRDNBqur0RiAzgFAfI0tYYnjlJ68hoHyHffU7ZDWk/edit?usp=sharing
