DESCRIPTION: This week, Erin and Ryan recover from their giant Gen Con episode by reviewing…probably one of the smallest games they have - Qwixx! They also talk about BFiG and some prototypes! GUEST: None RECENTLY PLAYED GAMES - (0:53): The Networks: Executives by Formal Ferret Games (BGG Link) Cerebria by Mindclash Games (BGG Link) QUICK TOPICS – (21:48): The Boston Festival of Indie Games is coming up on September 23rd. We’ll be there playing games and presenting an award. If you’re in the Boston Area, swing by and say hello! REVIEW - (26:16): Qwixx is a small, speedy roll-and-write game from Gamewright. Over the course of about 15-20 minutes, 2-5 players take turns rolling dice and crossing numbers off their player sheets, but there’s still a bit of strategy involved. A little bit. If you choose the wrong numbers to scratch out, you’re doomed to lock yourself out of valuable options down the road. If you play too conservatively, though, you’re going to struggle to keep up. We build up a consensus on who this accessible, portable dice chucking game and who should roll on to other things instead. (Note: if you don't see pictures below, you can view them via the RSS feed or clicking this link.) A standard Qwixx scorepad, with Red and Yellow in ascending numerical order and Blue and Green in descending order With this dice roll, any player may choose to cross out a six on any of their four tracks The active player chooses to pair the 2 white die with the blue die and crosses out Blue 6 A player's final score of 88 points   PLUGS - (48:22): We’re raffling off a copy of Go Nuts For Donuts to a lucky Patreon backer. DESCRIPTION: This week we return from our fall mini-break refreshed and ready to go. We start off by chatting about a small handful of the many games played recently, chat about our recent past and future convention plans, and then sit down with Ignacy Trzewiczek, head of Portal Games, to talk about the processes he goes through when designing games. GUESTS: Ignacy Trzewiczek RECENTLY PLAYED GAMES - (01:49): Clank! by Renegade Game Studios & Dire Wolf Digital Inis by Asmodee Editions / Matagot  The Guardians: Explore by Reihon Games Roll Player by Thunderworks Games QUICK TOPICS - (26:06): We chat about the next Granite Game Summit in a few weeks - Halloween Edition. If you're in the area, consider coming on down! Ryan explains The Pantheon of Meeples. Oh, and there's our first meeting of Board Game Club! We recap some of the highlights from the 2016 Boston Festival of Indie Games, including memorable games and our presentation of one of the Figgie awards. FEATURED TOPIC - (38:32): With a dozen or so memorable, well-received games under its belt and a self-assured designer at the helm, it's crazy to think that Portal Games is less than a decade old. The biggest reason for their success rests with the fundamental design philosophy of Ignacy Trzewiczek that board games should be an experience when played. He's stated numerous times in public and on his own blog the importance of this focus in everything they create. Today we sit down with him to go into that idea in more detail, include areas like: How important Robinson Crusoe was to Portal's initial success and instant reputation.  Why theme for him always comes before mechanics. And where that philosophy came from The purpose of his Board Games That Tell Stories blog Both his first and second books emerged from it How his background in GMing RPGs influenced First Martians Why he keeps a journal on most games he play What his two most influential games are on his design process   PLUGS - (1:16:16): To celebrate Ignacy's participation and the Halloween season, we're raffling off a copy of Tides of Madness to a lucky Patreon backer. This past weekend, Matt and Mitch shipped up to Boston to meet up with Alex and Willy and to attend the Boston Festival of Indie Games. However, not a lot of FIG coverage was actually done this year, and they guys were having so much fun hanging out and being pals that they neglected to even sit down and record an episode of the podcast in the same room. So instead, Mitch opted to record their table conversation during the breakfast they had right before they parted ways again. This is the almost entirely un-edited recording, featuring awkawrd silences and bleary-eyed hosts. Due to the lower audio quality of this episode, it is recommended that you listen to it with headphones on.

It's a five man crew this week as Gary returns to the podcast. First, we've got what is now our weekly Overwatch update. Gary, Brian, and Justin both find something amiss when playing with a certain friend online. But they have a strategy on how to deal with it. Well, three of them do. Also, there's some commentary on who should be buffed and who should actually be nurfed. Interesting stuff. We then return to Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. It turns out the game is pretty good. Following that is the Fallout 4 DLC, in what is hopefully the last discussion about it for awhile (unlikely). Gary makes sure to talk about the Battlefield 1 demo, because it turns out him and Brian don't exactly see eye to eye on it. In a bit of a surprise, four us managed to attend the Boston Festival of Indie Games over at MIT in Cambridge. It's a small local indie game event that consisted of about 30 or so indie developers and table top board game designers and creators. It was a nice showcase, and we talk about some of the games that we saw there, so especially take a listen to that. In the Drunken News, we hammer away at the big news about the PS4 this week, along with Nintendo showing up at the Apple event, and of course, some early numbers from Metroid Prime: Federation Force.   The Drunken Show Notes: Metroid Prime: Federation Force flops Apple Reveals All-New 'Super Mario Run' Game Coming to iOS Nintendo Only Launching Four Mobile Games In This Fiscal Year HDR gaming coming to every PS4 via firmware update next week The PlayStation 4 Pro is not an Ultra HD Blu-ray player Sony’s PS4 Pro provides a mid-generation graphics bump to PS4 games [Updated] PlayStation 4 Pro games look amazing, but don't expect real 4K BioWare teases new Mass Effect: Andromeda details at Sony PS4 event Pokémon GO Plus, JUST AROUND THE CORNER No PS4 Pro 4K Blu-ray support? This week on Random Assault, Matt, Alex and Mitch, as well as quite a few guests, pile into Alex's sweaty fuckin' bedroom to talk about the Boston Festival of Indie Games! It devolves into the usual Random-Assault-branded malarkey, but this episode is triple-stuffed with interviews from the exhibitors at FIG! Also Matt makes Alex's action figures fuck. Cause, you know.

Episode 054: Glenn Given & BFIG 2014 Length: 35:40 Subscribe to Show Link:    Welcome back to Vox Republica, the Cardboard Republic Podcast! We’re back at posting new episodes every Thursday, and each episode will be about 20 - 30 minutes long. From one convention to the next! This week we have on Glenn Given, a designer of Games by Play Date and the Tabletop Coordinator for the upcoming Boston Festival of Indie Games 2014. He shares with us a number of changes that are coming to BFIG this year, his team's criteria on how they selected this year's entries, and his thoughts on some of the over forty indie games people will be able to stop and check out in the very near future! Well, that, and we sort of go on a tangent about digital video games, philosophy, the video game Majestic, and snowmobiles. It all ties in together, we swear!   For this week's gaming bulletin, check out our Crowdfunding Corner.   We’d love to hear from you! Please leave feedback via email at podcast@cardboardrepublic.com.
