While the 70's was more than kind to The Nuge (platinum albums and sold-out concerts everywhere), the 80s found The Motorcity Madman struggling to retain his audience and relevance. The 80s started off strong enough with the popular Scream Dream record, but that was followed by a dud of a live album ... although in concept was an interesting idea. Intensities In Ten Cities (get it?) was full of new material, but most of it was too off-the-cuff, not incubated enough for prime time. That was followed by Nugent, a record that is not highly thought of by the masses, but this Nugeaholic has taken it to his bussom. Sure the production (by Ted himself) is lacking (not enough emphasis on the guitar heft), but there's no problem with the material (as you'll hear). Penetrator followed, introducing unwelcome keyboards and hair metal to the fray and was then followed by the even more egregiously light metal of Little Miss Dangerous (the worst album of the decade). While If You Can't Lick 'Em, Lick 'Em tried to revert back to the original Nuge formula to close out the decade, the songs just weren't there to do it justice. Nice thought though. Regardless, there's more than enough quality material from the 80s to fill a playlist. Don't agree? Them's fightin' words!!! Big Idea: God is loving and loves us too much to allow us to continue on in our self-destructive materialism. To liberate us requires violent love. That violent love erupts from a Father’s gracious heart and calls us to wake up and cry out. God is violent—wake up! (vv. 1-12) Joel’s name means “God is Yahweh,” and his father’s name, Pethuel, means “sincerity of God.” Yahweh is speaking with forceful sincerity to his people whose hearts have forgotten him. When Joel describes the loss of “grain, wine, and oil,” he is saying that Israel’s way of life is totally devastated. In the Mediterranean, grain is the staple of life, wine is daily drink, and oil is essential for everything from cooking to lighting, from cleansing to skin care. God’s people were being forced to recognize that he provides these blessings. God deprives in order to restore our relationship. God is a good Father, so those he loves he disciplines. God gives and he takes away—but whether he gives or takes away, the agenda is the same: to produce loving children. Repentance brings joy and stewardship. Obedience that is worshipful and grateful causes all life to flourish as a testimony to future restoration. God is love—cry out! (vv. 13-20) It is the love of God personified in Jesus Christ and prophesied by Joel that demands that sinners run to him for liberation from their bondage to materialism. It is the Lord’s passionate love for his people, described later (2:18), that must draw forth love from his people, which is the ultimate sign of Christian maturity. But the Lord does not require maturity before he saves, just a cry for mercy (2:32). In our walk with Christ, we move from orthopraxy (right behavior) to orthodoxy (right practice) to orthopathy (right ordering of what we love), as Danish theologian Søren Kierkegaard said. This is not a linear process but the general way in which we come to know and apply the gospel. Discussion Questions Have you ever experienced discipline from the Lord? How did you respond initially? Has God ever revealed to you the love behind his discipline? How is sometimes even severe discipline more loving than giving one what one wants? What is repentance, and what is a practical way you do or can practice it in your life? How is God’s love and mercy demonstrated in the way he responds to even the frailest repentance? With which of the three experiences of the gospel do you most identify recently (orthopraxy, orthodoxy, or orthopathy)? Why? What would it look like for you to have a more wholehearted devotion to following Christ?

El currículum del autor valenciano Victor Santos es de lo más impresionante. Prolífico y omnipresente donde los haya, su trabajo ha sido publicado en la mayoría de las editoriales españolas (desde Norma hasta Dolmen pasando por Panini, Planeta, Astiberri...) o americanas (desde Marvel a DC, pasando por Image, Boom, Dark Horse...) siempre demostrando un estilo único y personal y una apuesta por los cómics de género, entre los que destaca el pulp. Con autores como Frank Miller, Steranko o Matt Wagner entre sus influencias, Victor Santos afronta su vigésimo año como profesional del cómic con el estreno de la superproducción de Netflix adaptando su obra Polar. Con Mads Mikkelsenen la piel del Black Kaiser, la expectación en torno al largometraje es máxima. Prolific writer Frank Barbiere is the guest on this week's DPS. He has been involved in a couple of large Marvel crossovers, including his "monster Dirty Dozen" book, "Howling Commandos of SHIELD". He has had quite a cult following from his creator owned adventure book "Five Ghosts' over at Image, detailing the adventures of a thief with some interesting personality conflicts. But now he is telling a new kind of romance in "Violent Love", a tale of crime and love in the late 60s. They begin their investigations with Jim Thompson's The Killer Inside Me, adapted by Devin Faraci and Vic Malhotra (IDW Publications). The guys spend much of their time comparing this adaptation to the original classic noir novel, yet at the same time they try to focus on the comic on its own terms. Next, they briefly discuss Christopher Sebela and Niko Walter's Demonic (Image Comics), a mashup of both crime and horror, and the first issue of Wolfcop (Dynamite Entertainment). The latter is Max Marks's spinoff of the 2014 movie, and despite (or because of) its over-the-topness, it doesn't capture much of the guys' attention. But Derek and Andy are  much more interested in the next two #1 issues, Frank J. Barbiere and Victor Santos's Violent Love (Image Comics) and James Robinson and Tom Feister's Grand Passion (Dynamite Entertainment). These are both crime narratives with a twist of romance, stories that look to play off of the young-couple-on-a-crime-spree formula. Finally, the guys wrap up with the first volume of Goldie Vance (BOOM! Box), Hope Larson and Brittney Williams's all-age detective series, reminiscent of Nancy Drew and Sally Lockhart stories. In this book and our conversation looks to read the character of Mary in the infancy narratives of Luke and Matthew alongside the lives of experiences of the Indian surrogate mother living a postcolonial India. Reading Mary through these lenses helps to see this mother and her actions in a more ambivalent light, as a mother whose love is both violent and altruistic. Dr. Sharon Jacob is a New Testament Professor at our podcast partner - Phillips Theological Seminary. She is also  a native of India, studied at Bangalore University, received a Master of Divinity from Lancaster Theological Seminary in 2003, and a Master of Sacred Theology from Yale Divinity School in 2005.
