In this podcast, Brion shares the interview he had with Hawkfanatic's Tyler Devine of The Devine Line from back in February 2021. In the last podcast, they discussed Hawkeye history, but in this podcast, he shares a great story about the time he interviewed Dan Gable for an article he wrote in high school. We also found an interview with Tom Brands a few years ago with Flo Wrestling, where he talks about what it was like to be an assistant coach under Dan Gable. Brion shares his perspectives of getting a press credential to cover the 2024 Citrus Bowl from the press box for the first time. He explains the process and timeline of a day in the life of an Iowa media reporter. He reads from the article he wrote on HawkFanatic.com after the game. The Citrus Bowl loss was the worst margin of defeat in a bowl game in Iowa football history, surpassing the 37-3 loss in the 1993 Alamo Bowl. Brion also lists out the past bowl games with a 20 point or more margin of victory or defeat. When using Statistical Process Control (SPC) charts to monitor your process, you are comparing your current data to historical data to determine if the process is similar or different. The basis for this decision lies in the Western Electric Rules (now called Nelson Rules) for detecting out of control conditions. For example, if you detect 6 consecutive data points going upwards from the previous data point, that is considered a trend, and the process should be stopped to investigate if there is a problem or not. Brion Hurley, Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt with Business Performance Improvement, will discuss these rules in depth, and explain how they can help you more quickly identify problems in your process. Q&A will follow the presentation. Brion Hurley, Iowa native, author, Lean and Six Sigma Instructor, and founder of Business Performance Improvement, starts off our discussion by challenging Lean and Six Sigma professionals to share their knowledge and expertise with non-profit organizations. This practice not only benefits the non-profit agency, but helps further develop the practitioner, brings additional experiences back into the for-profit business, and helps that business fulfill its mission of having an impact on the communities in which they are located. Brion is also very interested in helping organizations use Lean and Six Sigma to reduce their environmental impact, improve their communities and engage their employees to drive greater financial and mission results. You can find out more about his work by going to www.brionhurley.com and www.biz-pi.com. We touch on many other CI-related topics, so be sure to catch the full episode.
After making improvements to your processes, a best practice is to calculate the benefits to the organization. Calculating financial benefits is an important part of building momentum for improvement with upper management. However, this can be confusing for those not familiar with financial data, and is not done very often in organizations. Brion Hurley will discuss commonly used methods for capturing financial impacts of process improvement work. The 5 categories are: • Income Statement • Cash Flow • Growth • Avoidance • Soft Savings We will define each category, go through a few examples, and go through a practice exercise as a group. It's Episode 78 and today's highlight is Tracy and Elisabeth's interview with author Brion Hurley—host of the Lean Six Sigma for Good podcast. Brion is a Master Black Belt by day, but in his spare time he has dedicated himself to a book series documenting stories of Lean Six Sigma success in the nonprofit world—and that's good news for everybody! Next up we review an app that helps you dot your “i”s and cross your “t”s. And for Q&A, we asked our problem-solving community, “How do you make sure you make improvements “with” people instead of “to” them?” And our community responded! Enjoy another great day at the cafe. IntroductionWelcome, everyone to Episode 57 of the Enterprise Excellence Podcast. We have Brion Hurley back on the show with us today continuing an amazing conversation. Last episode, we spoke about the power of data with the Six Sigma side of things and the power of going and seeing and the elements of Lean. And we started to connect this to the environmental side and have had some amazing conversations about how there is a win win. Brion, thank you so much for joining us again today. Two Minute TipI think if I had a couple of minutes to talk to somebody, I would say, focus in on where is the biggest opportunity and impact you can have. Because at least you know, it's the biggest area, and you're most likely to get the support you need to continue working on that. And then I think it goes back to the simple, Lean principle of going to the Gemba. So if you're studying the water, walk the facility and look at all the pipes, pretend like you're a drop of water going through that facility and walk the flow. And see every time there's leaks, and there's condensation, and then there's water being wasted down the drain. It will open your eyes up to walk that value stream and look for the waste in that process. And I think you'll find a lot of great opportunities that people might have said, we've already looked at all this stuff, but they haven't looked at it from that exact perspective. And so, I think that could be a way to bring it in. Or consider the energy. Where does the electricity come into the building? And how does it get dissipated out into the facility. It was a spaghetti diagram of mess when I saw the facility map at the at the site I worked at. So, I guess I would say pick the biggest priority impact from the environment standpoint, and then walk the value stream and go see. And I think you'll find a lot of great opportunities there and do it with a team make sure you're not doing it by yourself.Free download - system boundary map templateGo to enterpriseexcellencepodcast.com/downloads to get hold of a system boundary map template that will help you map out your organisation's current impact and waste reduction opportunity. It is such a pleasure to have Mr Brion Hurley on the show with us today. Brion is on the episode to talk about an issue close to my heart: how can we achieve economic outcomes for an organisation while helping our planet? The topic today is Lean Six Sigma for good. And I'm so looking forward to this episode. Quotes 15:25min So get the data that is going to help you focus on which area to look at for the details, but don't expect the system to tell you all the details.20:40min You know, I think the good thing is that a lot of these things are win-wins. So whether they care about the environment or not, this is the right thing to do. This saves money. This attracts employees. This gives us good PR. This reduces our permit fees or our electricity costs. Do you know? So I think trying to show the multitude of ways in which improving the environment helps the business. It'll hopefully, one or more of those will be enough to get people interested, and then hopefully, it's not so much about; we're just doing this because it's the right thing to do. But it's good for business too, and, and hopefully, you know, they'll come around to it. I really think if people get into this and really study and look at the impacts to our environment, I think they'll gain an appreciation for it. ConclusionWhat a fascinating initial episode with Brion Hurley on the topic of Lean Six Sigma for Good. I have gained many insights and look forward to learning more in the next episode of this two-part series. Join us next week for the concluding episode. This two-part episode series truly provides insights to help us all create a better future. Talk to you next week, by for now.LinksBrad is proud to support many Australian businesses.
