Brownes Dairy will be giving WA dairy farmers another price hike to incentivise them to maintain production amid national milk shortages. Every state in Australia is experiencing declines in milk production, which is putting pressure on prices at supermarkets around the country. “Our farmers are doing it tough and we want to encourage them to keep supplying this state with the fresh produce we've come to expect,” Brownes CEO Natalie Sarich-Dayton told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings. Brownes Dairy is going to pay its farmer-suppliers five cents per litre more for their milk from March next year. This is a significant announcement because the farmgate price usually only goes up by half or one cent per litre at a time. Natalie Sarich-Dayton took over the reigns as Brownes' CEO six months ago and she hopes this increase is enough to keep farmers in the industry. Ian Noakes, dairy council president with WAFarmers, is thrilled with Brownes' decision to increase the farmgate price to its suppliers. 8, 296 dairy farmer across the country have left the industry over the last decade. But with better prices and improved seasonal conditions there is now some optimism creeping back into the milking shed and even some new players coming in.
