Det sista pusslet från Cicada 3301 förblir olöst, trots år av försök från kryptografer och pusslare. Vi följer en nutida kodknäckare i jakten på svar och utforskar teorierna bakom denna mystiska gåta. Believe it or not, I did hear a cicada chirping just a few days ago. Must have been a Late-Comer Boy, trying to attract a female. The buzzing sound is made in the Tymbals (on the belly side of the insect). It literally is a quick clicking sound that creates a smooth buzzing. If you hear clapping as well, it will be smacking the wings on the abdomen. Egg-laying is very easy to spot: a characteristic “Herring bone” pattern on twigs with a thickness of a pencil. We're also not far away from the end of the Black Field Crickets' truuu truuuu truuu singing in the evening. The further north you go, the longer you'll hear those quite loud sounds in your lawn. They're male mating calls, attracting females who are laying eggs in soil to hatch next spring (November). Damage: eat a lot of grass from lawn/paddock. Easily attracted to lights, and noisy all night. A fabulous characteristic rasping sound can be heard during the nighttime, starting about 30 minutes after dark: the sound is made by both male and female tree weta. They communicate to keep in touch – Auckland and Wellington tree weta are rather social species. They live in harem-like communities with a dominant (large-headed) male and a couple of mature females, plus some juveniles. They shelter during the day in the same cavity. This is mating season and often you can hear frequent communications. Females lay eggs in soft soil, and young ones emerge in spring. Go outside into the garden with a torch and you'll find them – patience! In the afternoon to early evening, you can often hear a faint “Zzitssss” noise – often impossible to tell where it originates. It's usually a call with an irregular pattern, and it's unmistakable as Katydids. These orthopterans have the ability to “throw their voice” —like ventriloquists— to put off possible predators that may hunt by following the noise to its source. They chew buds of flowers and foliage and can do a bit of cosmetic damage to roses and dahlias in autumn (although Julie tends to disagree with that statement – she moves them on with force!). Generally speaking, the katydids overwinter as eggs and hatch again in springtime as “nymphs”: miniature versions of the adult insect. But I have seen a few of them going right through the winter, snacking of tasty leaves of Mistletoes in the garden. No doubt they shelter from the occasional frosts by staying deep within the host plants LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In 2012, a series of complex puzzles appeared on the website known as 4Chan. Thousands took to the forums, trying to crack the codes and riddles written by an author known only as Cicada 3301. Some believed the puzzles were a recruitment tool for an unknown organization, others said they were part of a global cult. And while few have seen behind the curtain, even those who have solved the puzzles still aren't sure who or what Cicada 3301 is – or what their ultimate goals are. This week my guest Dave Zielinski [39:53], author of the comprehensive book Cicada Madness, tells us when and where you can encounter this year's brood of periodical cicadas—and if you can't make that event, he'll tell you how to find waters that host regular emergences of annual cicadas, which are not quite as large but can offer spectacular fishing if your timing is right. All kinds of fish go crazy over the giant bugs, from trout to bass to carp-- even gar and catfish. Learn how to fish these flies, and how to tie them in this highly informative and timely episode that will help you plan this year's cicada expedition. In the Fly Box this week, we have a good mix of interesting questions and tips from listeners, including: What are your thoughts on drop beads for saltwater flies? I am having problems with blood knots and leader sections ending up the right length. On which Orvis rods will overlining help? How can I get my fly deep enough to catch walleye on a fly? A listener has various questions about fishing for striped bass on Cape Cod. What line should I put on my new Orvis Superfine graphite? Two fly-tying tips and a first aid tip from a doctor. I am swinging 5 or 6 wet flies at the same time, all in line, and sometimes drop fish on the lower flies. How can I fix this? How can you catch fish that are nearly impossible to approach in low, clear water? Some great tips from a listener on how to stay warm when winter fishing.

Friends! This evening kicks off an enormous labor of love here in Fort Worth at the Southside Preservation Hall! What started as an excited conversation over lunch with Matthew Williams has turned into quite the behemoth of a production. But we couldn't be more excited to see the inaugural Fort Worth Songwriter Festival make its way off the ground and take flight this evening! Early on, as I was consulting with my friend and professional law person Steven Lawrence, the idea of starting a foundation came into being, as this would allow us the opportunity to do more of the primary goals we'd set out with for the festival. And so it has happened. We're officially a non-profit organization: The Fort Worth Songwriter Foundation, of which the Fort Worth Songwriter Festival will be our flagship event! By far the most bona fide thing I've ever helped create. And while that makes me a little uneasy getting too professional and grown-up, it excites me to no end thinking of all the good we can do for our friends and our family in this community I love so much. Thought it'd be a good time to share the FWSF Mission Statement: To provide Fort Worth with an absorbing songwriting-centric festival experience featuring performances from amongst the region's finest songsmiths. To offer current and aspiring professional songwriters the resources, education, and networking opportunities to further pursue, inspire, and develop their careers. To grow, strengthen, and shine a light on the vibrant community of songwriters in Fort Worth. And that's the goal. I think we've made a pretty mighty stab at it this first year, and we are going to be working hard to keep doing to keep pursuing this goal for the Festival and the Foundation going forward. This year, we have four days of music in the Southside Preservation Hall & Rose Chapel, an after party at The Cicada, an after party at Magnolia Motor Lounge, an Open Song Circle all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday that we partnered with the Fort Worth Public Library on, and three educational programs for songwriters that we partnered with Hear Fort Worth being led by amazing individuals from the local music scene: D.j. Dugan, Grant Jackson Wilborn, and Jacob Furr. For my part in the music, I'll host an after party FWSF Late Night in the Ballroom - Keegan McInroe & Friends Saturday night with friends Aaron Stanfield, Danny Stone, Matt Tedder, Steve Hammond, Ginny Mac, Scott Copeland, Mollie Danel, Ruthie Craft, Dorian Marsh, and Simon Flory who will be celebrating a birthday come midnight that night! Also, want to thank our partners who are making this happen: Record Town, Hear Fort Worth, Afallon Productions (and Brooks Kendall, generally), Printed Threads, Fort Worth Public Library, amplify817, Mariposa Entertainment, 7013 Sound, and Fort Worth Roots. Thanks for supporting me and supporting us. I sure hope to see you out this weekend at the inaugural Fort Worth Songwriter Festival! Friends! This evening kicks off an enormous labor of love here in Fort Worth at the Southside Preservation Hall! What started as an excited conversation over lunch with Matthew Williams has turned into quite the behemoth of a production. But we couldn't be more excited to see the inaugural Fort Worth Songwriter Festival make its way off the ground and take flight this evening!Early on, as I was consulting with my friend and professional law person Steven Lawrence, the idea of starting a foundation came into being, as this would allow us the opportunity to do more of the primary goals we'd set out with for the festival. And so it has happened. We're officially a non-profit organization: The Fort Worth Songwriter Foundation, of which the Fort Worth Songwriter Festival will be our flagship event!By far the most bona fide thing I've ever helped create.
