On this solo episode, I share my raw thoughts and emotions of currently experiencing the most devastating wildfire in Los Angeles history. We have lost so many iconic trails, businesses, and entire densely populated neighborhoods have been scorched to the ground. At least 150,000 Angelenos have evacuated their homes, over 40,000 acres burned, over 12,000 structures destroyed, and at least 27 deaths. This monologue takes  take you through the first 7 days of the fire and what it feels like to live through this historic ongoing crisis as an Angeleno who has rediscovered the city through the Great Outdoors and the local mountain communities. I cover LA's long history with wildfires, the current impact of the Palisades & Eaton fires, how nature is resilient, delivering supplies to fire victims, volunteering around the city, and even share a past relevant conversation had with LA outdoor legend Casey Schreiner who is the founder of ModernHiker.com. It's been a nightmare of a week but seeing how the entire LA community has rallied together so quickly to help those in need has been incredibly inspiring. SoCal History: The Wild History Of Griffith Park

AirTalk is off this week, so we'll be supplying our podcast listeners with reruns of our Southern California history segments. Today's episode is on Griffith Park. If you'd like to suggest a topic for a future SoCal history segment, email it to atcomments@laist.com.  Griffith Park dwarfs other city parks. Its 4,300 acres make it about five times bigger than New York's Central Park. And, unlike Central Park's man-made rolling hills, Griffith Park is a true urban wilderness, comprised of a chunk of the Santa Monica Mountains. The park, originally Tongva-Gabrielino land, was gifted to the city by Welsh philanthropist Griffith J. Griffith in 1896, who also provided funds for the Griffith Observatory and the Greek Theatre. Griffith is a divisive figure: in 1903, he assaulted his wife with a gun and subsequently served time in prison. According to Casey Schreiner in his book Discovering Griffith Park, in its lifetime, “the park has been home to an airfield, multiple zoos, a landfill, a Civilian Conservation Corps work camp, a pre-internment camp and prisoner-of-war camp during World War II, housing for veterans, and more.” Joining us to discuss the history of the park and how Angelenos use it today are Mike Eberts, author of Griffith Park: A Centennial Historyand Casey Schreiner, founder of the site Modern Hiker and author of Discovering Griffith Park: A Local's Guide.

In the 1980s, the Great Salt Lake spanned more than 3,000 square miles. Now it sits at less than 1,000 square miles. Its soil contains toxic chemicals, including arsenic. After the Dobbs ruling, the Democratic Party responded by asking voters for donations. What's the party's strategy moving forward?   WNBA player Brittney Griner's trial begins this week in Moscow. She was arrested in February, just days before the country's invasion of Ukraine.  Following the Russian missile strike on a Ukrainian shopping mall, how will Western countries further sanction Russia?  Looking for a scenic hike to take this summer? Modern Hiker's Casey Schreiner shares some of his favorites.

Hiking gear may not be among the first items on your packing list for a trip to San Diego, Anaheim, Los Angeles, or San Francisco, but you won't want to forget these articles of clothing. When you're not visiting world-class museums or checking out the diverse restaurant and nightlife scenes, California’s urban gateways offer a range of highly accessible—and highly unique—outdoor experiences. On this episode of the California Now Podcast, host Soterios Johnson chats with a few folks who know their way around the great urban outdoors. First, he connects with San Diego guide Kenneth Lippman, who provides insights on everything from the historic Gaslamp Quarter north to the alluring beaches of La Jolla. Next, Johnson gets a feel for outdoor opportunities in and around Anaheim with Orange County journalist Gregory Nagel, who discusses the culinary offerings at the Anaheim Packing House as well as the al fresco shopping scene at Fashion Island in Newport Beach. Johnson's next guest, guidebook author Casey Schreiner, knows Griffith Park like the back of his hand. He shares a few hidden gems that you may not have known about in the famous sprawling Los Angeles landmark. And finally, Johnson looks northward to San Francisco and the historic Presidio, where celebrated chef Traci Des Jardins dishes on her favorite spots.

The Los Angeles Breakfast Club: ON THE AIR

Welcome to the "Los Angeles Breakfast Club: ON THE AIR" in the age of Covid-19! For the 3rd consecutive month of life during the pandemic, we depart from the normal structure of our audio time travel expeditions into the history, happenings and colorful characters that comprise the now 95 year story of the one and only Democracy of Ham an' Eggs ... As he did last month, former club president Jerry Zerg gets the ball rolling, this time with the help of longtime club manager Harold Link, who speak of dark days in the club's past, when on more than one occasion, the Los Angeles Breakfast Club was forced to give up their beloved homes. Phil Leirness and his intrepid announcer, Marc Hershon, then guide you through member birthdays and through check-ins with each of the five Breakfast Club tables ... Find out how life is treating the dais table's Lily Leirness (who offers up a Presidential Report for the first time in months), the nurses table's Chicago Chapter (the irrepressible Maurice and Diane Terenzio), the Konrad Monti smoking section's Casey Schreiner (who has a new book AND some sad news to share with his L.A. friends), the 60's Mafia table's Bob De Wees (who updates on the the Breakfast Club's charitable foundation), and the Roosters' very own Rex Link. You will learn things you never knew about these people, you will hear heartening tales of how they are embracing these challenging times, and you will enjoy a lot of laughs.  Reverend Barbara Adams provides a few laughs of her own, as she takes us down the path that leads to our continuing "Adventures in Friendship" and the Don Snyder Orchestra gets toes tapping with a song we have not heard played at the Shrine of Friendship in way too long!

Democrats haven't had a ruling majority in the Montana House of Representatives since 1991, and yet they still manage to get some of their legislative priorities passed each session.  How?  Montana Rep. Casey Schreiner says it comes down to pragmatism and bipartisanship.  "Through this whole time in the Legislature, I really have tried to focus my vision on being pragmatic and accomplishing goals," said Schreiner, the House Minority Leader in the 2019 Legislative session. "Let's make sure we're pragmatic. Let's make sure we're solutions-oriented." It takes 51 votes in the House, 26 votes in the Senate, and the signature of the governor for a bill to become law. That means the success of any legislation relies on some level of bipartisanship. From health care, to education, to infrastructure, some across-the-aisle cooperation is required if the state is going to adopt a balanced budget before the 90 legislative days are up.  In Episode 2 of the Montana Lowdown podcast, House Minority Leader Casey Schreiner talks about the importance of working across the aisle to get work done that benefits the majority of Montanas.

Casey Schreiner went through a similar transformation but he didn’t do any of it “kinda” -- he put the pedal (boot) to the metal (trail) and uncovered an unknown passion for hiking. With that passion he started www.modernhiker.com and wrote Day Hiking Los Angeles (available on Amazon and book stores).
