Today on Online for Authors, guest-host Carole O'Neill interviews Audrey Gale, author of the book The Human Trial. Audrey Gale long dreamed of being a writer, but never anticipated the circuitous road she'd take to get there. After twenty-plus years in the banking industry, she grew tired of corporate gamesmanship and pursued her master's in fiction writing at the University of Southern California.   Her first novel, a legal thriller entitled The Sausage Maker's Daughters, was published under the name A.G.S. Johnson. The novel explores one woman's struggle to find her place amidst the upheaval of the radical 1960s. Her second, The Human Trial, is the first book in a medical-thriller trilogy inspired by Gale's own experiences with the gap between traditional medicine and approaches based on the findings of the great physicists of the 20th Century, like Einstein and Bohr. Both The Sausage Maker's Daughters and The Human Trial incorporate Gale's fascination with historical and scientific research, and always with women finding their places.   Gale lives in Los Angeles with her husband and dogs where she is found hiking the Santa Monica Mountains every chance she gets.   In her book review, Carole stated that The Human Trial showed that a small number of high school students graduate early and get accepted into a college program of their dreams. Very few graduate high school at 16 years old and go on to get a full-ride at Harvard University. However, Randy Archer, the son of a steel-mill worker in Pennsylvania, does just that.   Audrey, the author of The Human Trial, takes you back to the 1920s, against the backdrop of The Great Depression, and introduces us to Archer as he is still living at home with his father and older brothers. They all expect him to follow them to a life in the steel mill. He has another idea, but no financial way to fulfill that dream.   Gale describes how Archer defies the odds, with the help of his high school counselor and her friend at Harvard. She convinces Archer he will be mentored alone the way to a degree at the prestigious university unavailable to many.   During his years as a graduate student studying to become a pathology researcher, he meets a physics student, Adam Wakefield, working on his PhD. He's developed a much-advanced microscope which allows the two students to discover a way to offer a non-traditional healing method to terminal patients.   There is, of course, a love interest that Archer can't quite understand. Why such a beautiful girl from Boston's Beacon Hill would be interested in him, stymies him. Gale keeps you believing they will make the perfect marriage, or will they?   The Human Trial has something for everyone: medical science, academic scheming, blue-collared families vs. Boston Brauhmans, and an impossible secret discovery everyone wants a piece of. This is a book that will keep you pulling for the underdog until the final pages.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author Audrey Gale Website: https://audreygaleauthor.com/ FB: @Audrey Gale Author IG: @audreygaleauthor   Purchase The Human Trial on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/3DquTdM Ebook: https://amzn.to/4hgoaRm   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   Want to be a guest on Online for Authors? The Palisades and Eaton fires, which ignited in early January, wreaked havoc on the communities and landscapes of Southern California, marking a tragic chapter in the region's history. It started in the rugged terrain of the Santa Monica Mountains, spurred by dry conditions and unseasonably high winds. The Canyons have long called to the bohemians and artists of Los Angeles. While Laurel Canyon is renowned for its role as a hub of rock history in the 1960s and '70s, Topanga Canyon has its own rich tapestry of stories. In this episode of My Rock Moment, we welcome Emmeline Summerton from the Instagram account Lost Canyons LA, a historian of the LA Canyons and former writer for the New Topanga Times. Together, we explore Topanga's iconic rock legends and the songs inspired by this enchanting area. Was there truly a roadhouse that sparked Jim Morrison's lyrics in “Roadhouse Blues”? Did a fateful house party in Topanga Canyon contribute to the breakup of one of the most successful bands of the late '60s? Which famous Topanga musician got his start with Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention before forming his own band? And did Ronald Reagan's daughter really co-write a classic Eagles song? In light of the recent devastating fires, this episode pays tribute to the unique beauty of Topanga Canyon, nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains. Despite the challenges, this iconic area endures, and My Rock Moment is proud to celebrate its lasting rock 'n' roll legacy. The Peripatetics
A Mere Animal Existence

The Peripatetics

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 22, 2024 21:52

To a world on the brink of madness, at war with itself, Thoreau pointed to a paradoxical truth: “There is a keen enjoyment in a mere animal existence.” In this episode of The Peripatetics, we explore the precarious balance between humanity's creative genius and the traps we've set for our wild nature. From the endangered mountain lions of Los Angeles, confined by freeways, to the ways in which algorithms confine today's artists, we navigate a way to bridge the tension between freedom and control, wildness and civilization. Building on the reflections in episode 7 about Romulus and Remus, I reflect on the original sin of civilization — our betrayal of the wild — and consider whether we can, like the cougar of the Santa Monica Mountains, find our way back to a more untamed existence. Transcripts of all episodes are available here. Find Trey on Instagram. Click here for Jason Klassi's Cougar Photo. Episode Themes Include: The Precarious Balance Between Creativity and Control: This episode explores how humanity's genius for creating can also entrap us, both physically and creatively. From mountain lions confined by highways to artists constrained by algorithms, the tension between freedom and control becomes a central focus. Civilization's Original Sin: Building on the reflections from Episode 7, the episode delves deeper into civilization's primal betrayal—the decision to suppress and dominate the wild. This betrayal is seen as the root of humanity's disconnection from nature, and, by extension, from our own untamed instincts. The Dangers of Domestication: Just as wild animals are confined by human-made barriers, our intellectual and creative freedoms are increasingly limited by societal and technological constraints. The episode questions whether modern life's algorithmic grids are strangling our wild creativity. Rewilding as a Path to Healing: By exploring the possibility of rewilding both our physical environment and our imaginations, the episode considers how humanity can heal from the wounds inflicted by our disconnection from nature. Can we, like the mountain lion in L.A., find a way to bridge the divide—both within ourselves and in our world—and return to our wild roots? Rewilding the Imagination: We highlight the imagination, not just as a tool for artistic expression, but as a necessary force in rewilding our minds and our landscapes. The episode suggests that a new kind of creativity is required—one that nurtures, rather than confines, the imagination. Freedom Through Connection to Nature: Nature is presented not as something to be controlled or conquered, but as a guide toward freedom. By reconnecting with the natural world, the episode argues that we can break free from the traps of modern life and restore our untamed selves. Join us as we explore the fragile balance between freedom and control, creativity and confinement, and discover how reconnecting with the wild might just be the key to reclaiming our truest selves. About The Show Inspired by the ancient tradition of walking philosophers — from Aristotle and his followers to Thoreau and Nietzsche  — who walked as a way to engage deeply with their thoughts and ideas, The Peripatetics wanders through th e thoughts of great thinkers in nature, art, literature, and philosophy as they intersect with the simple, transformative act of walking. In season 1, we are discussing Henry David Thoreau's definitive essay on the subject of walking, connecting it with wisdom from a wide swath of philosophic tradtions which share his devotion to achieving clarity and peace through movement. Whether you're a fellow walker, someone looking for a bit of tranquility, or just curious about how a good walk can change your perspective, you're in the right place. May your path be smooth and your pace steady. “We're in this time when the earth is activating this awakening, we're part of the immune system of the earth. So then, what do the kids need to hear? Do they need to hear the battles of the Civil War, the names of the Egyptian pharaohs, the capitals of the States? Or do they need to hear that they're magical beings, threaded to a living earth? That's what they need to hear everyday from us adults, and we need to give them the evidence for that.”This week, we are joined by Paul Astin and Jenny Griffiths, the co-founders of Manzanita School & Institute, a nature-based school in Southern California. Founded in 2014, Manzanita challenges educational paradigms and nurtures the whole child through its unique indoor-outdoor curriculum blending rigorous academics, land stewardship (including a working organic farm), and the study of local ecology on its 21-acre campus and the protected lands that surround it. This is an incredibly inspiring conversation that you won't want to miss. Jon, Aidan, and Sarah were all moved to tears on multiple occasions. We discuss the genesis of the school, what they believe the role of teachers is in helping students at different stages, what the latest research says about the role nature connection plays in education, and how we help students create and reinforce an empowering narrative about themselves and the role they have to play as members of our society and stewards of the earth.About Paul & JennyDr. Paul Astin, Ed.D. and Jenny Griffiths, M.A., are longtime educators and Topangans who founded Manzanita in 2014 with the intention to create a new and meaningful alternative to the existing education system—one that honors the unique community and landscape of the Santa Monica Mountains, while preparing students to become independent thinkers and confident, embodied leaders in a rapidly changing world.Dr. Paul has worked in education for over 30 years. He has been a teacher and administrator in both public and private schools, as well as the founder of a health-education nonprofit and a jazz pianist. He has a BA degree in Prehistoric Studies, a bilingual and bicultural teaching credential, an MA in Latin American Studies, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from UCLA, where his dissertation focusing on adolescent development and middle school reform won the Dissertation of the Year Award in the Educational Leadership Program.Jenny has a master's degree in Art Education and has taught art and organized community art events for more than two decades. She has also designed and delivered courses for mothers in building mother-daughter groups, a project supporting networks of mentors for adolescent girls. She now oversees the Seeds (K-2) early childhood program at Manzanita. Jenny has also received training in leading council and has been leading our parent council group at Manzanita since 2014. If you'd like to suggest a topic for a future SoCal history segment, email it to atcomments@laist.com.  Griffith Park dwarfs other city parks. Its 4,300 acres make it about five times bigger than New York's Central Park. And, unlike Central Park's man-made rolling hills, Griffith Park is a true urban wilderness, comprised of a chunk of the Santa Monica Mountains. The park, originally Tongva-Gabrielino land, was gifted to the city by Welsh philanthropist Griffith J. Griffith in 1896, who also provided funds for the Griffith Observatory and the Greek Theatre. Griffith is a divisive figure: in 1903, he assaulted his wife with a gun and subsequently served time in prison. According to Casey Schreiner in his book Discovering Griffith Park, in its lifetime, “the park has been home to an airfield, multiple zoos, a landfill, a Civilian Conservation Corps work camp, a pre-internment camp and prisoner-of-war camp during World War II, housing for veterans, and more.” Joining us to discuss the history of the park and how Angelenos use it today are Mike Eberts, author of Griffith Park: A Centennial Historyand Casey Schreiner, founder of the site Modern Hiker and author of Discovering Griffith Park: A Local's Guide.

The Breath Work Experience Did you know that the power of your breath can alter your state and your body's chemistry? The Breath Work Experience is a series of 15-minute guided breathing sessions facilitated by trauma informed breath work coach & ceremonialist, Nicole Zimmermann.   What is Holotropic Breathwork? Holotropic breathing, also known as holotropic breathwork (HB), is a practice that involves managing and speeding up your breathing patterns in order to influence your mental, emotional, and physical states. In the 1970s, psychiatrists Stanislav and Christina Grof created an unusual New Age approach to achieve altered states of consciousness (without the use of drugs) as a potential therapeutic aid.  A Message From Nicole: If you're here, you're most likely struggling to build a loving relationship with yourself. And before we dive into how I can help you, I want to share a little bit of my journey with you.I too have struggled most of my life to build a loving relationship with myself. I've spent so much time searching for validation outside of myself, constantly trying to be something I'm not, constantly hustling for my worth, constantly playing small. This all stemmed from one undeniable truth: I didn't love myself or know how to cultivate love within myself...I didn't even know where to begin. This lack of self-love led me down a tumultuous road-- a road of numbing out and attempting to escape myself every chance I got. I fought a long battle of eating disorders and addiction. I then entered an industry that only exacerbated all of this. I may have looked okay on the outside, but inside I was slowly dying. Inside I was exhausted, disconnected, empty, and unwilling to face any of my feelings.I knew I wanted more out of this life, I knew I wanted to be of service, and somewhere deep down in my soul, I knew I had it in me...I just had absolutely no idea how to get there.  I realized that I had to go deeper into my own internal experience and heal the parts of myself that were driving the internal pain; I decided that in order to finally be at peace with myself I had to finally face the parts of myself that I had been avoiding for my whole life. I've been on that beautiful journey ever since.Visit Our Store!Muse House Retreat4332 Tujunga Avenue, Studio City, CA 91604(818)-824-3290 Book A Reading: https://www.musehouseretreat.com/healersBook A Workshop: https://www.musehouseretreat.com/eventsDo you want to host your own retreat but can't find a space? This week mixed media artist Rebecca Youssef. Rebecca was born in Lebanon, PA in 1973. The daughter of teachers Chic & Linda Hess, she was the middle of three children; she has an older brother and younger sister. Art runs in her family in different mediums; her sister and a cousin are graphic artists, an aunt was a fashion designer, and her paternal grandmother was a hobby painter. At the age of 9, her family moved to Hawaii where Rebecca began to appreciate the connection between nature and nurture. She developed her interest in gardening and arboriculture, which established the foundation for her focus on eco-culture. Her love of trees and nature is reflected in her work as she strives to bring awareness to the importance of sustainable art. She says: “I've been an avid gardener since the age of ten. Even then, I recall understanding the importance of growing and nurturing native plants. I was already in awe of California's lush topography, and knew that a balanced ecosystem was key to survival for all its members.” Rebecca graduated from the University of Arizona in Tucson with a Bachelor in Fine Arts and a Masters in Art Education from Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles. After college she worked as a graphic artist and in fashion before teaching art. She met her husband Ike in LA where they live with their three children; Andrew, Caroline and Margaret. Rebecca returned to art seven years ago and after initially finding it a challenge once she found how her art belonged in her soul and with her eco-friendly values, she settled into what has become her niche; using natural materials and sustainable practices for eco-conscious mixed media art. She says: ‘Beautiful things can be made by working with the planet, not taking from it.” As the saying goes: one man's trash is another man's treasure and Rebecca has proved how waste can be transformed into beauty. A cultivator of native California oak trees, her family's acorn project has seen over 25,000 acorns planted in the Santa Monica Mountains over the past ten years. Rebecca is currently an artist-in-residence at the 18th Street @ The Airport art complex in Santa Monica, CA.Rebecca's favorite female artists: "Jaclyn Gordyan, who uses objects found in nature in her work Laurey Bennett-Levy, who is a printmaker using cyanotype Joan Wulf, who uses smoke and fire to create marks Julie Mehretu, who creates layered, abstracted landscapes Mickalene Thomas, whose collages incorporate glitter, rhinestones and enamel."Rebecca's playlist:"Podcasts: I Like Your Work, Art Problems, The Flying Fruitbowl, Arts To Hearts, Armchair Expert, Pivot Music: Hip Hop only Audiobooks: Everything from fiction to self help. Dr. Goldstein is one of the most trusted names in fertility and is highly recommended by her patients for her communication, responsiveness, and attention to detail. She has guided her patients through more than one thousand in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles and consistently delivers some of the highest pregnancy rates in the industry.  Dr. Goldstein obtained her MD from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City and is a double board-certified OB-GYN and Reproductive Endocrinologist.  During her time as a Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility fellow at UCLA and Cedars-Sinai Medical Centers, Dr. Goldstein published and presented internationally her revolutionary discovery of an important genetic mutation that causes what had previously been considered an unexplained cause of familial infertility. In an industry that is continually becoming less personalized, Dr. Goldstein is proof that you can provide world-class fertility care and empower hopeful parents to choose a fertility journey that aligns with their goals before anything else.  She weaves her way through the often overwhelming world of fertility care with intuition and empathy, to make sure her patients have a clear understanding of their diagnosis and treatment options. Dr. Goldstein is a fertility specialist at Beverly Hills Fertility and a partner of Innovative Health Diagnostics, which offers a variety of at-home tests, such as the AMH test, which focuses on infertility, as well as tests for COVID-19, general health biometric screening and both molecular and antibody STDs. Listening to his blissful synth meditations, listeners are treated to an open, cosmically vulnerable sound. This spiritual approach comes naturally to Botofasina. He grew up at Alice Coltrane's Sai Anantam Ashram in the Santa Monica Mountains. Being there, and studying at the foot of Swamini Turiyasangitananda herself, profoundly shaped his musical worldview, which echoes in his present day compositions: "At this point, I feel that the music I want to be a part of at least, is a music, a sound, a frequency that advocates and promotes some sort of introspection, back to the here and now." Botofasina discusses his upbringing, connecting to the divine, growing up on hip-hop, and much more this week on Transmissions. Support Aquarium Drunkard on Patreon. Welcome back to Earth to Humans! On our first episode back for the season, Sarinah speaks with guest, Beth Pratt, Executive Director for California at the National Wildlife Federation and renowned conservationist who has worked tirelessly to protect and restore wildlife habitats across the state (which is huge by the way).In this episode, we'll be discussing Beth's unique relationship with a certain mountain lion known as P-22, who became a symbol of the coexistence between wildlife and humans in urban areas. P-22 captured the world's attention when he journeyed from the Santa Monica Mountains to Griffith Park, right in the heart of Los Angeles, where he settled down and made his home. His presence in the city provided a rare opportunity for people to connect with wild animals and inspired many to take action to protect the city's remaining wild spaces. We had Beth on the show back in 2017, but a lot has changed since then. For one, the famed 101 freeway wildlife crossing that was then just an idea still in need of final funding, now looms completed over the huge 10 lane freeway. Unfortunately since our last interview, P-22 was captured by wildlife officials in December 2022 due to concerns related to his health and a few days later, on December 17, 2022, was euthanized. Our conversation discusses the impact of his loss on the local community and the wider conservation movement as well as the challenges facing urban wildlife and the importance of preserving natural habitats in cities in order to support biodiversity and the survival of these precious predators. So, join us as we delve into the fascinating world of urban wildlife and learn more about the amazing journey of P-22, the people who have been touched by his impact, and the many urban species he has inadvertently saved due to his global impact. Subscribe to our monthly newsletter at:earthtohumanspod.com Join private conversations with top authors and access exclusive bonus content!
