AirTalk is off this week, so we'll be supplying our podcast listeners with reruns of our Southern California history segments. Today's episode is on Griffith Park. If you'd like to suggest a topic for a future SoCal history segment, email it to atcomments@laist.com. Griffith Park dwarfs other city parks. Its 4,300 acres make it about five times bigger than New York's Central Park. And, unlike Central Park's man-made rolling hills, Griffith Park is a true urban wilderness, comprised of a chunk of the Santa Monica Mountains. The park, originally Tongva-Gabrielino land, was gifted to the city by Welsh philanthropist Griffith J. Griffith in 1896, who also provided funds for the Griffith Observatory and the Greek Theatre. Griffith is a divisive figure: in 1903, he assaulted his wife with a gun and subsequently served time in prison. According to Casey Schreiner in his book Discovering Griffith Park, in its lifetime, “the park has been home to an airfield, multiple zoos, a landfill, a Civilian Conservation Corps work camp, a pre-internment camp and prisoner-of-war camp during World War II, housing for veterans, and more.” Joining us to discuss the history of the park and how Angelenos use it today are Mike Eberts, author of Griffith Park: A Centennial Historyand Casey Schreiner, founder of the site Modern Hiker and author of Discovering Griffith Park: A Local's Guide.
On this episode I share the unforgettable community collaboration group hikes that we hosted during the month of May 2023. I felt compelled to do a solo episode as it was quite the action packed month filled with many full circle moments. I had the opportunity to co-host a group hike to Sandstone Peak with the outdoor writing legend Casey Schreiner (Founder of Modern Hiker), a 4 peak challenge in the San Gabriel Mountains with beloved hiking groups LA Trail Killers, OutAdv+, and SweatSoGuud, a #WeHikeToHeal sunset trek to Echo Mountain with the powerful spirit Karla Amador (Founder of the 52 Hike Challenge), and even had a collaboration with the Spotify for Podcasters team around the topic of community building. Co-hosting these adventures with some of the most inspiring leaders in the outdoor community was powerful & impactful and what makes it all extra special is that each individual was a previous podcast guest on this very show. Enjoy my trek reflections as I take you along with me on these epic outdoor adventures. In the 1980s, the Great Salt Lake spanned more than 3,000 square miles. Now it sits at less than 1,000 square miles. Its soil contains toxic chemicals, including arsenic. After the Dobbs ruling, the Democratic Party responded by asking voters for donations. What's the party's strategy moving forward? WNBA player Brittney Griner's trial begins this week in Moscow. She was arrested in February, just days before the country's invasion of Ukraine. Following the Russian missile strike on a Ukrainian shopping mall, how will Western countries further sanction Russia? Looking for a scenic hike to take this summer? Modern Hiker's Casey Schreiner shares some of his favorites.

109. The Modern Hiker is LAs best hiking blog and that's not just my opinion. USA Today actually named it the 2nd best hiking blog in the entire nation! If you type in any search about hiking in Los Angeles or Southern California the Modern Hiker is almost always on the first page if not in the top 3 in results. We have been following this blog and all their awesome outdoor and hiking tips for many years so we were super excited to interview the owner and author Casey Schreiner on this episode. Casey has also created a hiking app and written 2 popular books on the LA outdoors, 'Day Hiking in Los Angeles' and 'Discovering Griffith Park'. In this conversation we talk about how the Modern Hiker was started, his future plans for the blog, his two books and his absolute best hiking hacks for Los Angeles. I am so excited to share this episode and conversation with Shawnté Salabert. She's hiked over a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail and spent two years on the trail taking photos and recording impressions for her book, Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail: Southern California. I got to know Shawnté through her work as a journalist when she interviewed me for Adventure Journal. She's had articles published in Alpinist, Backpacker, Outside, Los Angeles Magazine and Modern Hiker, among others. In this episode, we chat about how she got her start in the outdoor world, leaving the security of a well-paying job in the music industry to pursue her passion as an outdoor journalist. We talk about her tips for tackling big goals and hiking solo and she shares her favorite trail food. After talking about adventure, we take a deep dive about the role that journalism can play in disrupting implicit bias, and why we need to protect and support a free and independent press now more than ever. This episode is filled with inspiration as well as practical advice. It was a treat to interview Shawnté. I hope you enjoy this episode and I look forward to hearing your thoughts about it. Emily is a writer, adventurer, climber, and comfort zone smasher. Put on her first international flight at 3 weeks old, she's been addicted to adventure ever since. From wandering the forests of Sweden alone at age nine, to solo trekking in the Himalayas of India, to joining the circus as a professional aerialist, Emily is a big fan of the "just get out there and do it" mentality. She loves inspiring others to go outside, travel, and get curious about everything. As John Muir so aptly put it, "going out is really going in.” Emily works as a freelance journalist based out of Los Angeles and has written for Outside Magazine, Backpacker Magazine, Mountain Life Magazine, Outdoor Project, Modern Hiker, Territory Supply, The Outbound, Women Who Explore, and many others. Some of her notable outdoor accomplishments include: hiking the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal, backpacking the High Sierra Trail in California and finishing atop Mt. Whitney, trekking the Laugavegur Trail in Iceland, summiting Illiniza Norte in Ecuador, summiting Vinicunca in Peru, hiking the Inca Trail with her mom, solo-trekking the Backbone Trail, climbing Cactus to Clouds in the winter, trail running Yosemite Rim to Rim, and dozens of other high-altitude peaks in the Sierra Nevada and California. What might be our most fascinating episode yet gets started with a lot of laughs courtesy of announcer Marc Hershon, club master of ceremonies Richard Gilson and recent "chairman of the day" Braden Graeber. Host Phil Leirness then sets the stage for an truly adventurous time travel expedition into the past, featuring a famous explorer, a renowned Ethiopian chorus and the earliest presidents of the Los Angeles Breakfast Club. Club chaplain Reverend Barbara Adams takes us down the path that leads to our continuing "Adventures in Friendship" as she pays tribute to former first lady Barbara Bush, sentiments echoed by L.A. council district 13 councilman Mitch O'Farrell. Modern Hiker's Casey Shreiner encourages us all to drink deeply from The Devil's Punchbowl. The Don Snyder Orchestra performs the beautiful theme song from that film noir mystery classic Laura. We get better acquainted with the Breakfast Club's delightful Megan Lee. Club president Lily Holleman tells us of her recent travels and previews May's happenings at the Shrine of Friendship. Finally, good ham 'n egger Robert Nichols calls in to discuss the May 12th Los Feliz Neighborhood Council election.

Author, internet boss and modern hiking guru Casey Schreiner take Nick and Muriel out of their comfort zone and up a big ass mountain! Since moving to LA, Nick and Muriel have hiked as a way to stay in shape (kinda) and relieve stress (kinda) and explore nature (kinda). Casey Schreiner went through a similar transformation but he didn’t do any of it “kinda” -- he put the pedal (boot) to the metal (trail) and uncovered an unknown passion for hiking. With that passion he started www.modernhiker.com and wrote Day Hiking Los Angeles (available on Amazon and book stores). Casey takes Nick and Muriel on a hike that forces them to wake up at 6am, fill the same backpacks they’ve had since high school with water bottles, and eventually sweat through all their clothing. Check out two minor league hikers step up to the pros with the Modern Hiker himself.
Shawnte Salabert was raised on the mean streets of Milwaukie where a local Boys and Girls Club introduced her to the outdoors. Her newfound love of camp and adventure led her away from Wisconsin as she sought the secrets of becoming Yogi Bear in human form. Eventually, she stumbled into Los Angeles where her snark landed her a side gig writing for Modern Hiker when she isn’t hiking or drooling over Mark Ruffalo. Jason and Little Shay Shay tried to stay on topic one night in Silverlake Meadow as they discussed her life and mocked each other.
