What does it takes to have the mindset of an explorer? ‘If we succeed at every single thing we’ve ever tried, we haven’t tried anything particularly ambitious’. Mountaineer, the first woman to have summited Everest from both sides, author and professional speaker Cathy O'Dowd is this week's guest on WEMcast. WEM Education Lead Will Duffin chats to Cathy about her career and how she's forged a successful career from adventure. They start with the global obsession of Everest and the outsourcing of risk and skill as it becomes a commercial climb swamped with novice climbers and long queues. The reflect on Cathy's first ascents in the 1990s, and how this decade, with it's developments in technology and logistics, proved the turning point in drawing the media's attention to the mountain. Cathy reflects on her epic climbing attempts - the successes, setbacks and difficult decisions made (plus avalanches, broken bones and unchartered descents). The pair also discuss the artificial concept of 'turn-back time' and how mountaineers need to be much more dynamic with their risk assessments and decision making to ensure the safety of their summit attempts. Cathy and Will also reflect on the hugely misleading idea of 'never giving up' and why giving up is, in fact, one of life's greatest skills. The only woman to summit Mount Everest from both sides, Cathy O'Dowd joins us with her history and some life lessons for us. She was a "stubborn and adventurous kid" who stumbled into mountaineering through a content. In retrospect, everything about that first effort was wrong from the make-up of the team to the raison d'etre. Cathy speaks of setting a rule set at the formation of every team. She discusses failures as successes- not just points for learning. And that when you're climbing a mountain, summiting a mountain is just one of the goals.

Cathy O'Dowd is a South African mountaineer and motivational speaker, who now lives in Andorra in southern Europe. She is best known as the first woman in the world to climb Everest from both sides. She turned those climbs into a 20+ year self-employed career as an international motivational speaker (paid talks in 44 countries, so far). And that in turns leaves her with a lot of free time to pursue her passions for mountains - climbing and skiing. As a side project, she now runs a website The Business of Adventure, to help younger adventurers get practical about how they can build their brand, fund their projects, and monetize their achievements. She is passionate about encouraging people to take the leap into the unconventional career or lifestyle while being pragmatic about the work involved in making that a financially successful choice. WE COVER: The launch of her career as the first South African to climb Everest from both sides. How she monetized her experience through the world of corporate motivational speaking. Cathy O’Dowd is South African and was the first woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest climbing from both sides. She wrote a best selling book about her experience called, Just for the Love of it. Cathy, shares about the expedition in a way that may surprise people. The title for the book came to her because she was tired of hearing men write about “The Death Zone and Killer Mountain”, she says it is actually really fun. Her focus is on the importance of team work and relationships with the other climbers and how the experience gave her a much greater insight to human behavior. This is where, Cathy says, business and mountain climbing intersect. Many times the “Type A”, leaders in the world are not the best at communicating with their teammates. They are more focused on the competition and being the first one to the top. This is not the most effective way to deal with big challenges when climbing a mountain or running a business. The success of any mission depends on communication and who can endure and collaborate together to get over the finish line. This is where women shine and yet many times we are greatly underrated by ourselves and others. She learned to step up, value her own opinion and accept failure. “As a mountain climber, you have to know when to turn around and realize the failure of an expedition which can have dictate a life or death outcome. ” Cathy says even though she made it to the summit, the expedition was a failure in many respects as 3 team members walked out shortly into the climb and one climber died. Cathy’s Everest experience and her success to the summit, to her surprise, paved the path to a carreer in motivational speaking. She speaks to groups and corporations around the world on how to build a strong team and work environment. We discuss the difference in the way men and women assert themselves. Why do women lack confidence when it comes to giving their input but men, who may have little to no expertise, are far more forthcoming with their opinions and advice? Cathy tells us how she and only one other woman ended up on this expedition with the South African team and is candid about her reservations to join the group. It did not take long to learn, as she kept expecting the men to open a space for her to give her input, that it was not going to happen . “Although uncomfortable, a woman has to step into the noise, put her elbows out and push a space for herself.” Cathy continues to climb all over the world and has so much to share from her mountain and rock climbing expeditions. She has turned her experiences into a wealth of human understanding and knowledge you won’t want to miss. I've been fascinated by Everest since I first read Into Thin Air when I was in the 9th grade (about 16 years ago) and I never dreamed that I would get to speak to somone who's been on Everest, let alone someone who was there during the 1996 season.
