As a Health Educator, Celiac Awareness Month in May may get me more excited than most. More than any other time of year, people are reading, sharing, and focused on educating and raising awareness about this disease. There's nothing I like seeing better than info and resource-sharing. There's also nothing I like LESS than seeing info shared that isn't fact-based but based solely on personal experience. While there's nothing wrong with saying ‘this was my experience' in some circumstances, often times this info is used to make important decisions that can impact health. As a member of many online Celiac and Gluten Free groups, the same questions and issues come up again and again. That served as the inspiration for “5 Facts a Celiac Doctor Wants You to Know about Celiac Disease.” Working with the University of Maryland Celiac Center to create this Celiac Disease Fact Sheet, I hope you will share it with anyone you know with Celiac, who is gluten free, thinking about going free, has gluten sensitivity or cares for a child with any of the above.Read the 5 Facts here: https://baltimoreglutenfree.com/5-facts-a-celiac-doctor-wants-you-to-know/I would love to hear from you! Celiac Awareness Month always brings with the hope of spring and the renewal of the plants and flowers in our communities. If you live in a rural area or on a farm, spring brings many more wonders. I'm hoping that it also brings a renewal of your involvement in the celiac community, in person or maybe online. This month Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene and I speak about Celiac Awareness Month, in particular about the mascot for the campaign and some of the activities and promotion related to it. On celiac.ca you'll find a graphic of “It Be” that's ready for colouring. If you're able to promote celiac awareness month, or share other posts on social media, please be sure to use the hashtags – #CeliacAwarenessMonth #CeliacIsAChameleon #GlutenFree #CeliacCanada Also, here is the link to the symptom checker – https:www.celiac.ca/celiac-disease-symptom-checklist We also spoke about the new course that Selena DeVries RD is starting called The Confident Celiac. You can find Selena online at selenard.com and on Instagram at celiac_made_simple. Ellen also gave me lots to think about with an article about using rice papers to make croissants. Sounds pretty crazy, but I'll try over this month and report back. Here are links from Ellen. Many with celiac disease often report feeling isolated, awkward, and disheartened as they navigate the world on a gluten-free diet. But the future is bright, and there are tools you can use to maneuver the social landscape and cope with the burden of a chronic illness. In this Town Hall celebrating both Celiac Awareness Month and Mental Health Awareness Month, Dr. Anava Wren discusses her work on the social and psychological impacts of celiac disease, and shares her top tips for combatting that isolation. Dr. Wren is a pediatric celiac psychologist and Clinical Associate Professor in the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology at Stanford University Medical Center. She is also the Director of the GI Psychosocial Services & IBD/Celiac Psychological Health Programs. She has been a leader in Stanford Medicine Children's Health Center for IBD and Celiac Disease since it was founded in 2020. This Town Hall is possible thanks to our sponsor, Crunchmaster. Crunchmaster crackers are made from simple, wholesome ingredients, and are certified gluten-free. Thank you Crunchmaster! It's the end of May and I have another opportunity to chat with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com to go over some of the articles and information Ellen has brought to us over the past month. Ellen published an article about a young woman who posted online about a family situation in which she felt her needs to be on a gluten free diet were not being properly considered by other members of her family. Normally, we would side with the person who has special needs, but by reading more about the circumstances, both Ellen and I found fault in the attitude of the woman eating gluten free. You can read more in the link below. We all know there are other medical conditions that those of us with celiac disease are more likely than the general population to have or suffer with. Ellen brings three such conditions that we should at the very least be aware of. Knowledge is power! I mentioned again the recent podcast I produced with Avery about her mentorship program. You can find out more at celiacchat.org. Both Ellen and I are big fans of Celiac Canada and we felt at the end of Celiac Awareness Month, it was time to suggest that listeners connect with the local Chapter that is closest to them. Immunic Inc (NASDAQ:IMUX) CEO Dr Daniel Vitt joins Proactive's Stephen Gunnion with more on the serious and lifelong nature of celiac disease to mark Celiac Awareness Month. Contrary to common misconceptions about gluten intolerance, where dietary changes alone are often deemed sufficient, Vitt emphasized that such adjustments do not adequately manage celiac disease symptoms, which are persistent and require more significant intervention. Currently, Immunic is developing a new treatment option, IMU-856, specifically targeting celiac disease. This program marks an important step in the clinical development journey, as the company recently shared with the first clinical proof of concept data for the treatment. Vitt affirmed the company's commitment to advancing treatment options for those affected by celiac disease. #ImmunicInc, #CeliacAwarenessMonth, #CeliacDisease, #DrDanielVitt, #GlutenIntolerance, #IMU856, #Healthcare, #ClinicalTrials, #MedicalResearch, #DrugDevelopment, #HealthInnovation, #ChronicIllness, #PatientCare, #TreatmentOptions, #MedicalNews, #Biotechnology, #Pharmaceuticals, #ClinicalData, #MedicalUpdate, #HealthAwareness #ProactiveInvestors #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews
Mike and Cam are kicking off another Celiac Awareness Month with their 9th Annual Celiac State of the Union show. This year they examine a number of areas that they feel are most important to the celiac and gluten free community. They also look at how society has changed since the beginning of the podcast in 2016 to the present, based on their own expectations of where they thought it would be nearly a decade later.
My hope in sharing this episode is to help those who didn't get the proper education they needed at the time of their diagnosis. Not many do. Here are some basic fundamentals of what celiac is and why we need to eat a strict gluten free diet. Also, this episode can help you learn more to then go education you family and friends so they can better understand your needs and your decision to eat gluten free. Happy May, Celiac Awareness Month! At the beginning of each month, I speak with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com to discuss articles, studies and topics of interest Ellen has presented to us over the past month. Of great concern to consumers in general, and gluten free consumers in particular, is the rising cost of food. In an effort to bring our unique perspective on these issues in front of lawmakers, Celiac Canada held a breakfast event on Parliament Hill recently. There are many aspects to the CCA message including the emphasis on the gluten free diet costing up to five times as much as gluten food, the unworkable tax relief that is not an effective solution as well as the lack of nutritional fortification in our gluten free processed foods. Dr. Peter Green debunks six common myths of celiac disease. I found this particularly fascinating, as science will always win out these emotionally charged discussions. Ellen also brought us an article on new guidelines for physicians to diagnose and treat their celiac patients. Selena DeVries RD shares valuable information about over-the-counter allergy medications as well as her advice on digestive enzymes. Ellen has done it again – she's found new foods in her area. She not only found a cafeteria-style build your own pizza place, but also gluten free waffle cones. Here are links to the articles we spoke about – NEWS FROM THE CELIAC SCENE • The Struggle is Real. In preparation for Celiac Awareness Month in May, I thought it was a good time to find out what's been happening rcently with Celiac Canada. The organization is celebrating its 50th birthday this year and along with events in May, there are lots of opportunities to learn and get involved. To raise awareness of economic issues and the under-diagnosis crisis, Melissa will be on Parliament Hill for a breakfast event on May 30th in an attempt to capture the attention of our Members of Parliament. Gluten free food fortification and the upcoming grocery rebate are all topics up for discussion. Good news has come through from the Province of Ontario that going forward the blood test for celiac disease will now be covered under provincial OHIP. Julie tells us about Webinar Wednesdays during May, and an opportunity to “Ask the Expert” at the Gluten Free Garage at the end of May in Toronto. Lots is going on during the month of May including light up events across Canada, along with meetings, meals and informal get togethers. It's time for the roundup chat with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com. May is Celiac Awareness Month and Ellen and I start things off with a call to help spread awareness. It can be as simple as a conversation with those around you, or you can attend an event that might be happening near you. You can find out more about Celiac Canada's plans on their website www.celiac.ca. Ellen brings to our attention a study in Italy of school children to help identify more celiacs at a young age. The interesting thing here is that the initial testing is done with one drop of blood, then children who are positive go on for further testing. Sounds simple and hopefully this test can be used more widely in the future. Ellen brings us up to date on the current practice of diagnosing and managing patients with refractory celiac disease – a condition that does not respond completely to the gluten free diet. Covid-19 vaccines have been controversial, but what was understood is that the celiac population responded similarly to the overall population with the vaccine. A recent study showed that unvaccinated celiacs are more likely than the general unvaccinated population to be hospitalized and suffer more ill effects. Ellen made a discovery at Walmart! Walmart is selling the Schar brand of gluten free foods, but what Ellen found at her local store was a treasure trove of all gluten free Schar foods brought into Canada. Different stores carry different products, and may place then in different aisles, but if you look, you may be richly rewarded. During this month Ellen will oblige me by asking two questions on her social media – firstly, as a consumer would you like to see, in a grocery store, all the gluten free food together, or mixed in with the regular food in the separate aisles? And second, how do you feel about store brands of gluten free foods, cookies, pizzas etc., co-packed, marked gluten free, and with the store branding? Is this something you would purchase and support? Hopefully, you'll weigh in on our two questions and Ellen and I can discuss the responses at the beginning of May. Dani Renouf, Registered Dietician at St. Paul's Hospital joins us to discuss National Celiac Awareness Month!
I was able to attend the second webinar presented by the CCA during the month of May, Celiac Awareness Month. The subject of this webinar was IBS and Celiac Disease. There were two very engaging speakers, and I had the privilege of speaking with both of them for this podcast. Meghan Donnelly is a Registered Dietician who works for Dr. Schar, as Senior Manager of Nutrition Services. We know the company as Schar gluten free. Megan works with individuals who could benefit from a specialized diet. She has worked with many patients who are celiac, as well as those who have IBS. She explains the low FODMAP diet, which is meant as a resource to identify specific foods that may be causing IBS symptoms in the gut. Megan explains the process of working through the diet as well as other forms of dietary treatment. Megan has some great slides in the webinar. The link is below. Dr. Maria Ines Pinto-Sanchez is the Lead at the Adult Celiac Clinic at McMaster University's Farncombe Digestive Disease Centre. Dr. Pinto-Sanchez gave a great description of both the similarities and differences in both the presentation, testing and treatment of IBS and Celiac Disease. I speak to her about the patient journey when presenting with symptoms that could be IBS or Celiac. She very well defines the differences of how the gut is affected in both conditions. There are some great slides and charts in the webinar presentation that illustrate these differences. Also, Dr. Pinto-Sanchez would like to encourage everyone to fill in the international survey about covid and vaccines. You can find the survey at https://bit.ly/redcapCovid19VaccineSurvey. Best to have your vaccine certificates handy, as the survey is collecting that information as part of the survey. The CCA presented a webinar the first month of May, Celiac Awareness Month, about Neurology and Celiac Disease. Nicole Byrom introduced the two guests for the webinar, and now, I have been able to record a podcast with both of them. I first speak with Sonia Jones, who was also featured in an article in the Canadian Celiac Magazine. Here's the link – www.celiac.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/CCA-May-Magazine-1-May-2022.pdf Sonia's story is one of a very quick onset of neurological symptoms, followed by a prolonged journey to diagnosis. With all the tests Sonia was given, she's confident she's the million-dollar patient. I then speak with Dr. Ian Croall. Dr. Croall is a Research Fellow at the University of Sheffield in England. He is not a medical doctor seeing patients, but during the course of his research, he has studied the brains of many people with celiac disease, gluten intolerance, and gluten ataxia. You can find out more about his studies by watching the webinar. I speak to Dr. Croall about the impacts of his research on other celiacs and on those yet to be diagnosed. You can watch the webinar at this link – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akkR02Zzzb0 You'll also hear in the podcast about the “Could it be Celiac” Checklist. It's time again to chat with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com. Ellen brings us great articles and tidbits about celiac disease and the gluten free diet all month long and this is our opportunity to discuss. First, we talk about an article that tries to define the differences between food allergies, intolerances and sensitivities – it's a big and somewhat confusing job. Easiest to note that Celiac is none of the above, but many of us have an allergy, intolerance or sensitivity in addition to celiac. Have you ever wondered what xanthan gum is exactly? I had not, until Ellen raised the topic. You might be surprised at what you learn. Recently, Health Canada re-vamped their sign up for food and other recalls. Ellen gives us a summary of the changes and how the new process is so much easier. Ellen highlights the Tuesday questions answered by Selena DeVries RD on Instagram. Her website is Healthbean Nutrition and you can find her Instagram @celiac_dietitian. We talk about what makes the Honeycomb app unique. This is of special interest to those who have additional food allergies, or those who want to know exactly what to order at a particular restaurant to be safe. I have a great story for Ellen that follows up from a discussion we had about a foreign celiac student staying with a family in Victoria. May is Celiac Awareness Month. So, Stay tuned.
