From healing autism and autoimmune diseases with bone broth to the sneaky, sad truth about what it actually takes to get on grocery store shelves (spoiler: brands have to pay for shelf space—and they're often required to go on sale multiple times a year, which eats into their margins), this episode is packed with eye-opening insights. We get into the GAPS diet—what it is and how it works—the realities of USDA regulations, and the little-known details about Prop 65: including how some brands voluntarily put that scary warning on their packaging even when their test results are well below Prop 65 lead levels. My dear friend and sister in Christ, Sharon Brown, founder of Bonafide Provisions, shares her powerful story of helping to heal her son with bone broth, and how that journey led her to create the first company to bring real, traditionally-made bone broth to the market. Plus, we talk about sneaky ingredients in many bone broth products and what to watch out for. In this episode, I break down the results of my Smart Nutrition methylation and nutrigenomics test — and how it's helped me finally understand the root cause of my inflammation, energy crashes, IBS symptoms, and persistent neck and eye issues. I share my exact results, including key gene variations like MTHFR, CBS, COMT, MAOA, and SOD2, and how these are impacting my: – Stress response and emotional regulation – Ability to clear toxins, sulphur, and ammonia – Digestion, sleep, and protein metabolism – Histamine sensitivity and inflammation Based on my profile, I'm now supplementing with: – Methylated B-complex (B12, B2, B6, 5-MTHF) – Buffered vitamin C – Choline (350mg with each main meal) – Glycine powder (with every protein meal) – Dicalcium Malate (to support mineral balance and inflammation control) – Omega-3 DHA/EPA – Magnesium glycinate (evening) – Marine collagen (evening) – Liposomal glutathione – Quercetin (for histamine and eye/neck inflammation) I'm also following a low FODMAP, ketogenic-style diet, spacing my protein evenly across the day, and using cold exposure and vagal tone exercises for nervous system support. Join us as we discuss effective non-diet focused methods for IBS relief. In this episode, Kate and Dr. Riehl review key factors on how gender can influence common symptoms of IBS.Hormones significantly influence IBS symptoms, with women being diagnosed 2.5 times more often than men, in part due to differences in gut function and pain perception. This episode features the following key discussion areas:• Women's fluctuating estrogen and progesterone levels affect gut motility and pain sensitivity throughout the menstrual cycle• Visceral hypersensitivity causes normal digestive sensations to be interpreted as pain - like a car alarm going off unnecessarily• The "microgenderome" refers to gender differences in gut microbiome that may contribute to women's higher rates of IBS and autoimmune conditions• Gut-directed hypnotherapy helps reprogram the subconscious mind to interpret gut sensations more accurately, with 70-80% improvement rates• Pelvic floor physical therapy can help address muscle tension that contributes to both constipation and diarrhea symptoms• Non-diet approaches including medications, supplements like enteric-coated peppermint, and lifestyle factors are effective IBS management tools• Regular exercise (especially in nature), adequate sleep, and stress management techniques complement other treatmentsFor more information on IBS-C treatments, check out our dedicated three-part series in episodes 14, 15, and 16.This podcast has been sponsored by Ardelyx and Nerva by Mindset Health.References:Mulak A, Taché Y, Larauche M. Episode Summary: Samina Qureshi is a registered dietitian specializing in IBS management from a weight-inclusive perspective. She challenges the common approach of endless food elimination, revealing that the standard low FODMAP diet should only last 2-4 weeks, not months or years as many attempt. Samina explains why food sensitivity tests are largely unreliable and how restriction often worsens gut symptoms by disrupting motility and starving beneficial gut bacteria. Instead, she advocates for focusing on adding variety rather than eliminating foods, and recognizes that simply nourishing your body regularly is powerful nervous system work. For those caught in cycles of restriction and worsening symptoms, Samina offers a refreshing path forward that expands food choices while addressing individual digestive needs, proving that healing your relationship with food and finding relief from IBS symptoms can happen simultaneously.MEET GUEST: Website / Instagram / Facebook / TikTok→ Sign up for Samina's Free Guide: 5 Ways to Avoid IBS Flares!MEET DESTINY: Website / Instagram / BlueSky / YouTube / TikTokSIGN UP FOR OUR NEXT LIVE WORKSHOP→ Your Perfect Morning Routine

In this episode of Proven Health Alternatives, I sit down with Dr. Allison Siebecker, one of the leading voices in Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). If you're looking for the best way to test, treat, and manage SIBO, this episode has the answers. We break down common misconceptions, the different gas types involved (yes, that matters!), and how SIBO connects to IBS and other gut issues. Dr. Siebecker also shares the best testing methods, including the lactulose breath test, and why one-size-fits-all treatments just don't work. Plus, we get into diet strategies like FODMAP and elemental diets, the probiotic debate, and how to actually prevent relapse. If you've struggled with gut issues—or treat patients who do—you won't want to miss this one! Key Takeaways: The Complex Nature of SIBO: SIBO involves an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine and can lead to symptoms similar to those of IBS, such as bloating, diarrhea, and more. Testing and Diagnosis: The lactulose breath test is emphasized as an effective method for diagnosing SIBO, and it's important to distinguish between the different types of gas overproduction involved. Treatment Approaches: Treatment for SIBO includes pharmaceuticals, herbal antibiotics, and dietary changes like the elemental diet. Success rates are high, but multiple rounds may be required. Preventive Measures and Relapse: Using prokinetics and maintaining a suitable low-carbohydrate diet can help prevent SIBO relapse, which is common in chronic cases. The Role of Probiotics: While probiotics can aid in treatment, their appropriateness depends on individual tolerance and phasing during SIBO management. More About Dr. Allison Siebecker: Dr. Allison Siebecker has been at the forefront of SIBO research and treatment since 2011, helping thousands worldwide with her integrative protocols. She's an award-winning author, educator, and practitioner, known for breaking down complex gut health topics into practical, effective strategies. She's also the 2021 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient from the Gastro ANP, has been teaching Advanced Gastroenterology at NUNM since 2013, and co-founded the SIBO Center for Digestive Health. Low FODMAP and Low Carb Diets Outperform Drugs for IBS Treatment: In this episode of Intelligent Medicine, Nutritionist Leyla Muedin discusses a study published in the Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology Journal examining the effectiveness of diet versus drug interventions in managing irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The study presents findings from a single-blind, randomized control trial comparing low FODMAP, low carbohydrate diets, and pharmacological treatments. Results indicate that both diet groups significantly outperformed drug treatments in symptom severity reduction, with specific benefits observed in patients suffering from constipation and diarrhea-dominant IBS. Leyla highlights the advantages of dietary interventions as first-line treatments for IBS, the practical aspects of implementing these diets, and the study's broader implications for improving quality of life for IBS sufferers.

Are you constipated? Better question: did you know that you could be constipated even if you poop regularly? As a gut health dietitian, I'm no stranger to the constipation conversation…because constipation is super common: according to the Canadian Digestive Health Foundation, constipation affects roughly 25% of Canadians. In the US? According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), constipation affects about 15% of the US population and that number skyrockets if looking at older adults. And people live with constipation for years - sometimes their whole lives - without realizing that proper nutritional care can actually do a lot to relieve their symptoms. Which is why we are chatting with my friend and dietitian colleague Andrea Hardy RD, who is one of my most trusted sources of digestive health information..and the author of a brand new ebook about constipation called Backed UP. Andrea is going to drop a lot of practical, useful information about what constipation is, what causes it and most importantly, what you can do about it. We cover everything from exactly what counts as constipation - even if you poop daily! - to the root causes of constipation, how nutrition helps and why throwing a ton of fibre into a constipated body can actually backfire, dramatically. This episode is a must listen for anyone who has a gut, AKA every single human on the planet. About Andrea Hardy RD: Andrea Hardy is a registered dietitian from Calgary, Canada where she runs a multi-disciplinary digestive health practice called Ignite Nutrition. Her focus is gut health & gastrointestinal diseases and is recognized in the media as Canada's Gut Health Expert. She is passionate about translating science into ‘easy to digest' information to support a healthy gut. She has spoken on the TEDx stage, as well as internationally about digestive health. On this episode we chat about: Andrea's own experience with constipation-predominant IBS How do we know if we're constipated? The different types of constipation, and what causes them The foundation of healthy bowel movements Fibre supplements for constipation Should you do low FODMAP if you have IBS-C? Learn about the connections between Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), the powerful probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri, the hormone oxytocin, bile flow, gallbladder function, and the vagal nerve. Discover practical solutions to optimize your gut-brain axis and enhance your overall health. Key Topics Covered: 1. What is SIBO and Why Does it Matter? Definition: Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth is an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine where they don't belong. Symptoms: Bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation, nutrient malabsorption, and fatigue. Causes: Antibiotic overuse, low stomach acid, impaired bile flow, and motility disorders. 2. The Role of Lactobacillus reuteri A probiotic superstar that supports a healthy microbiome. Stimulates the release of oxytocin, the "love hormone," improving emotional well-being and physical health. Benefits include improved skin health, enhanced muscle mass, better sleep, and reduced inflammation. 3. Oxytocin: More Than Just the Love Hormone Links between gut health and oxytocin production. How oxytocin influences digestion, stress management, and social bonding. 4. Bile Flow and Gallbladder Function Importance of bile for fat digestion and maintaining gut health. Poor bile flow and gallbladder dysfunction as contributors to SIBO and food sensitivities. Nutrients and lifestyle practices to improve bile production and flow. 5. The Vagal Nerve and Its Impact on Gut-Brain Health Overview of the vagus nerve as the main communicator between the gut and brain. How poor vagal tone contributes to SIBO, slow digestion, and low bile secretion. Signs of poor vagal tone: heartburn, constipation, and difficulty managing stress. 6.
