May is Coeliac Awareness Month, highlighting a condition that affects 1 in 100 people - many undiagnosed. Coeliac disease is an autoimmune reaction to gluten, and managing it means big changes in daily life.Joining guest host Anna Daly to answer key questions and help us better understand this often-misunderstood condition is Registered Dietitian Sarah Keogh.
With another Celiac Awareness Month upon us, Mike and Cam share their 10th Annual Celiac State of the Union. A Gluten Free Podcast Episode 177 On this episode, I begin with a quick recap of last week's powerful chat with Professor Bob Anderson, where we explored the science behind coeliac disease and the complexities of its diagnosis and treatment. This week, I'm taking a more personal turn.I want to talk about something I know many of us carry: guilt. Whether you've been recently diagnosed or have been living gluten free for years, you may carry around the thought that your coeliac disease is your fault. I know I have and it's taken me a long time to shed that guilt. Admittedly, I'm still working on it! Is it something I did? Was it my genes? My lifestyle? My diet? Or the doctors who missed it?The truth is—coeliac disease is caused by a mixture of genetic and environmental factors that are completely out of our control. So let me say this clearly:
Mike and Cam sit down with Dr. Ritu Verma, Chief of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Medical Director of University of Chicago's Celiac Disease Center. Dr. Verma helps the guys with some "myth busting" relating to celiac disease and a gluten free diet. They tackle both big and small topics including: Are there actually ways to reduce the chances of offspring developing celiac disease? How careful do kids really need to be while eating gluten free at home and at school? Is wheat starch safe for celiacs? And so much more!

In recent years, gluten-free diets have become more and more popular. No doubt you've seen “Free From” aisles in your local supermarket, and you can also get gluten-free items in health food shops or online. Some people have no choice but to adopt such a diet, because they have coeliac disease, a lifelong autoimmune condition which causes their body to attack its own tissue when gluten is consumed. According to Coeliac UK, the condition affects just 1% of the population. However, there have been claims that going gluten-free has benefits like weight loss, increased energy and improved overall health, but there's little in the way of research to back all that up. So, what is it about gluten that causes health problems ? Which foods contain gluten ? How can you tell if you really have Coeliac disease ? TWØBAYS weren't the first gluten-free brewers in Australia, but they've certainly done their bit when it comes to putting Australian gluten-free beer on the map, not least when their Session Ale was named best GF beer on the planet at last year's World Beer Cup in the States. Before achieving that prestigious high, they'd already become the first indie brewer to breach the macro-booze citadel that is the MCG – a move that has opened more doors for them – and set about changing people's perceptions as to what beers brewed without barley and a range of other malts typically used in brewing can be.Ahead of their 2025 Free The Taps event, at which some of the country's best beer venues are hosting TWØBAYS tap takeovers during Coeliac Awareness Week, we joined founder Richard Jeffares and head brewer Kristian Martin at the brewery's Dromana home.As well as hearing about Richard's journey from coeliac diagnosis relatively late in life to brewery owner via tours of GF breweries in the US, we discuss the ethos driving the business, the challenges of brewing with atypical ingredients, and their lofty – yet entirely reasonable – goals for the future. Before we get to Richard and Kristian, we discuss Labor's latest election promise to the beer world, Slipstream's success at this year's Royal Queensland awards – plus our “Slays Beer” feature on the young brewer behind their green Pandan-Monium beer, the recent openings of Rocky Ridge Duncraig and the new Bracket Brewing, Bright's move into the heart of Melbourne, the closing of entries for this year's Australian International Beer Awards and more.We also celebrate more good beer citizens with the second winner in our "Have You Done A Rallings?" campaign: Russell Steele, from Easy Times Brewing in Brisbane.Start of segments: 15:47 – Richard & Kristian Part 1 42.48 – Have You Done A Rallings? 46.14 – Richard & Kristian Part 2Relevant links: TWØBAYS' World Beer Cup Gold Free The Taps Labor Boost Their Election Promise Slipstream's Awards Success John Nguyen Slays Beer Bracket Brewing Are Back Rocky Ridge Duncraig Opens Bright Buy PAs In Carlton Have You Done A Rallings? A Gluten Free Podcast Episode 169In today's episode of A Gluten Free Podcast, I share something personal in the hope that it might help you on your own coeliac and gluten free journey. I recently had a bone density scan, and the results showed that I have osteopenia. This was a screening I had to push for. It wasn't something that was automatically suggested to me. If I hadn't advocated for myself, I wouldn't have known about this issue or had the chance to address it early.Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition that affects much more than just digestion, and bone health is a big part of that. Many people with coeliac disease are at risk of low bone density due to years of malabsorption before diagnosis, yet routine follow-up care isn't always offered. That's why it's so important to be proactive about your health. In this episode, I talk about:My experience getting a bone density scan – what led me to push for it and how I felt about the results. The link between coeliac disease and osteopenia/osteoporosis – why coeliac disease can put people at risk for weakened bones. The importance of follow-up care for coeliac disease – what health checks should be part of ongoing management. Why you need to be your own best advocate – because if you don't speak up for your health, things can be missed.Follow-Up Care for Coeliac DiseaseCoeliac Australia provides clear guidelines on what follow-up care should look like for people with coeliac disease. This includes:Regular blood tests to check for nutrient deficiencies and coeliac antibodiesA repeat gastroscopy (if needed) to check for intestinal healingBone density scans for those at risk of osteoporosis or osteopeniaMonitoring for other autoimmune conditions linked to coeliac diseaseResources & LinksCoeliac Australia's follow-up care recommendations: https://coeliac.org.au/learn/ongoing-management/More information on coeliac disease and bone health: https://coeliac.org.au/article/osteoporosis/Join the ConversationHave you had a bone density scan? In recent years, gluten-free diets have become more and more popular. No doubt you've seen “Free From” aisles in your local supermarket, and you can also get gluten-free items in health food shops or online. Some people have no choice but to adopt such a diet, because they have coeliac disease, a lifelong autoimmune condition which causes their body to attack its own tissue when gluten is consumed. According to Coeliac UK, the condition affects just 1% of the population. However, there have been claims that going gluten-free has benefits like weight loss, increased energy and improved overall health, but there's little in the way of research to back all that up.
