fWotD Episode 3267: Coeliac disease Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 15 April 2026, is Coeliac disease.Coeliac disease (Commonwealth English) or celiac disease (American English) is a chronic autoimmune disease, mainly affecting the small intestine. It is caused by an abnormal immune system response to gluten, found in wheat and other grains such as barley and rye. Coeliac disease causes a wide range of symptoms and complications that can affect multiple organs outside the gastrointestinal tract. The classic form of the disease can affect any age group, but is usually diagnosed in early childhood and causes symptoms of malabsorption such as weight loss, diarrhoea, and stunted growth. Non-classic coeliac disease is more commonly seen in adults, characterised by vague abdominal symptoms and complications in organs outside the gastrointestinal tract, such as bone disease, anaemia, and other consequences of nutritional deficiencies. In people with a genetic predisposition to the condition, eating gluten causes inflammation in the small intestine, damaging its lining and leading to malabsorption. The development of coeliac disease is believed to be influenced by other environmental factors, such as infections.Diagnosis is based on symptoms, blood tests, and biopsies of the small intestine. For people who have already cut out gluten, gluten may need to be reintroduced before testing to ensure an accurate diagnosis. The diagnosis is often complicated by the diverse symptoms, overlap with other disorders, and lack of awareness, leading to a delay in diagnosis. Current research indicates that there is not enough evidence to advocate for mass screening for coeliac disease in those without symptoms. The only treatment for coeliac disease is a lifelong gluten-free diet (GFD). A GFD involves removing all food and drink that contains wheat, rye, barley and gluten derivatives. Symptoms can improve within days of adopting a GFD, and the diet can improve quality of life, prevent further complications, and normalise some effects of the disease such as stunted growth. Approximately 1 in 200 to 1 in 50 people have coeliac disease. Diagnoses of coeliac disease have increased recently due to increased awareness and availability of blood testing. The disease is still thought to be underdiagnosed, with a significant number of people with the condition remaining undiagnosed and untreated. The disease usually develops before age 10; it is slightly more common in women than in men. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:16 UTC on Wednesday, 15 April 2026.For the full current version of the article, see Coeliac disease on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Joanna.

A special good morning to all the redheads listening. There's some new Harvard research that's come out about human evolution and it mentions you. I'll get to you in a sec. Conventional wisdom says that homo sapiens (us) basically stopped evolving when we emerged 300,000 years ago. We reached peak human. It took us about seven million years to evolve from looking more like Apes. It took us four million years to walk on two legs, which is one of things that makes humans. More recently we learnt how to use tools, language. But once we stopped hunter-gathering, roaming round looking for food, and settled down to farm our own and build cities and civilisations, natural selection wasn't such a big deal. But that's not true. They looked at DNA from 16,000 people over 10,000 years, some from ancient burial sites and modern ones from the UK Biobank. We used to think natural selection was changing just a dozen genes, they now reckon it's hundreds. Coeliac disease is now more common. You might think why? Who doesn't love pasta and oats? You'd think evolution would edit out coeliac diseases. No, because the gene actually increases your resistance to a bunch of germs and bacteria. So, you're less likely to die, more likely to live longer. The longer you live, the more likely you pass that gene onto your kids. That's how natural selection works. The gene for narrow waists have become more common because we didn't need to store as much fat post-hunter-gatherer days (though you wouldn't know it walking through the supermarket). And redheads, the red hair gene, MC1R, it's become more common in recent history. It's popular. More gingers than ever before. Congratulations. The only mystery is why as there's no obvious survival advantage, other than looking fabulous, I suppose.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of Nutrition Science Bites, Prof Clare Collins speaks with Dr Kim Faulkner-Hogg from Coeliac Australia, about coeliac disease, an autoimmune condition that is increasing in prevalence. They cover genetic factors, the role of gluten, and dietary considerations for those affected, including whether or not oats are gluten free. They discuss the importance of a thorough diagnosis, the implications of a life-long gluten-free diet, and the need for professional guidance in managing coeliac disease and ensuring nutritional adequacy of a gluten free diet and that people meet their nutrient requirements. The conversation also covers the relationship between coeliac disease and other conditions, such as Type 1 diabetes, and the health risks associated with exposure to gluten for people with coeliac disease.Key TakeawaysCoeliac disease is an autoimmune condition triggered by eating gluten.80% of people with coeliac disease remain undiagnosed.Coeliac disease is often referred to as the 'chameleon disease' due to its varied symptoms. The prevalence of coeliac disease has increased significantly since the 1950s.Genetic factors play a crucial role in the development of coeliac disease.Oats can be problematic for some individuals with coeliac disease due to presence of avenin protein that can cross-react with gluten.Long-term damage from undiagnosed celiac disease can lead to serious health issues, including osteoporosis and infertility.Type 1 diabetes is more common among those with coeliac disease compared to type 2 diabetes.Gluten-free labeling laws ensure that products labeled as gluten-free are safe for consumption.Consulting with healthcare professionals is essential for managing coeliac disease effectively. For more information on coeliac disease and to take the self-assessment test check the Coeliac Australia website: https://coeliac.org.au/the-coeliac-australia-awareness-week/Use our No Money No Time website to filet recipes that do not contain gluten https://nomoneynotime.com.au/healthy-easy-recipes/filter/allergies--glutenTo access the Healthy Eating Quiz: Click on the top right hand 'green button' called 'How healthy is my diet' https://nomoneynotime.com.au/Want a more Personalised Food, Nutrient Assessment Report? In recent years, gluten-free diets have become more and more popular. No doubt you've seen “Free From” aisles in your local supermarket, and you can also get gluten-free items in health food shops or online. Some people have no choice but to adopt such a diet, because they have coeliac disease, a lifelong autoimmune condition which causes their body to attack its own tissue when gluten is consumed. According to Coeliac UK, the condition affects just 1% of the population. However, there have been claims that going gluten-free has benefits like weight loss, increased energy and improved overall health, but there's little in the way of research to back all that up. So, what is it about gluten that causes health problems ? Which foods contain gluten ? How can you tell if you really have Coeliac disease ? Next week our first Brewers Lectures of 2026 takes place at the fantastic Full Circle Brew Co in Newcastle on the 25th February. We’ve got a brilliant line-up of industry talent taking part including Jack Walker, the head brewer at Azvex. Since being founded by Adam Henderson in 2020, Azvex Brewing Company has gone on to become of the UK's most respected producers of hop-forward pale ales and IPAs, fruited sours, and imperial stouts. And head brewer Jack Walker has played a huge part in that journey. Next week Jack will share his brewing expertise and give us an insight into how he produces the brewery’s beautiful West Coast Pils. While we look forward to that talk, Jack also shared some experiences of a different kind during our Manchester lectures last year. In 2025 Jack has found himself in the final stages of a coeliac diagnosis and in his lecture he outlines the challenges that has presented for a brewing professional while also outlining some of the misinformation and misunderstanding that surrounds the condition.
