Praise the LORD. Praise the LORD, my soul. I will praise the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save. When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing. Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD their God. (Psalm 146:1-5) As followers of the victorious Lord Jesus Christ, we use divine strategies for navigating our way in the world, not human ones.  And that makes us a bit strange.   But it's a theme that flows through the full breadth of the Bible—even here in these last five praise Psalms of the Psalter.   It's a theme the Church tends to forget though, just like the rest of God's people throughout the ages.  Or at least, we have a hard time grasping it.  And the crux of the problem is probably this: God asks that as we rely on Him—the God who we can't see—we drop our reliance on many of the things that we can see: humans, government, insurance providers, political parties, the strength of our own actions and agency in the world, the number in our bank account, you name it. God asks us to let go of the things that we feel we have some control over in order to trust in Him, the God who we cannot control.   What a difficult thing.  At many-a leadership training retreat, you'll find an exercise called the “trust fall.”  One of the folks at the retreat will be blindfolded, told to cross their arms in front of their chest so that they can't use their arms, and then are told to lean back until they fall over.  The idea being, that the rest of the members of the team behind you will catch you, not letting you hit the ground.  Of course, you're blindfolded, so you can't be sure that they're there.  And, maybe you don't know these people all that well—are they the sorts of folks that would let you fall just to laugh and point?  You don't know.  But you can't rely on your own legs or arms to catch you either—you're vulnerable.  Helpless.  Nothing between you and the floor but the trust that these unseen strangers will indeed do what they said they'd do, and catch you.   Following this God we claim is a lot like that.  He tells us that in fact, we're already vulnerable and unable to do much to save ourselves.  Despite the illusions of control we seemingly have over this world and our place in it, we cannot save ourselves.  Not from sins, but also not from the generational hurts of our families, the restructuring of our workplace, the chronic pains of our bodies.  We actually have very little control over our world and lives.  We're quite vulnerable, and our position in this world is always somewhat precarious.   So God asks us to let go of the things we can see and to fall into His hands—the hands of the God we cannot see—instead.  An act of trust: a trust fall.     It is easier to trust the people we can see though, like our leaders.  Or the things we can hold, like our insurance and OHIP cards.  Or the things we can do, like work or think our way to a place of self-sufficiency and security.   But all these things, including our own strength is guaranteed to fail at some point or another.  We don't live forever.     There is only One who can guarantee our trust will not be broken—and that's God.  The only One who remains unchanging amid our changing lives and circumstances, the only One who endures beyond the fleeting strength of our bodies and institutions.   So, will you let yourself fall into the arms of God?  Even though you can't see Him? Blessed is the one whose hope and trust is in The Lord their God. As you journey on, go with his blessing:     May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you : wherever he may send you. May he guide you through the wilderness : protect you through the storm. May he bring you home rejoicing : at the wonders he has shown you.  May he bring you home rejoicing : once again into our doors.

The Government of Ontario is set to expand the number of private health clinics allowed to perform certain types of surgeries and diagnostic procedures. Critics say the plan will further burden the healthcare system by pulling away hospital staff, while supporters say it's a necessary step to help struggling hospitals. Part of that announcement included the planned closure of a number of ServiceOntario locations, a detail that's caused some concern. It is easier to trust the people we can see though, like our political leaders.  Or the things we can hold, like our insurance and OHIP cards.  Or the things we can do, like work or think our way to a place of self-sufficiency.   But all these things, including our own strength is guaranteed to fail at some point or another.  We don't live forever.  Pandemics happen.  So do other crises. This week on Open Sources Guelph it's Blue Thursday, the saddest Thursday of the week. To celebrate, we're going to talk about the Code Blue in our healthcare system that Ontario's inglorious premier thinks he's solved, and then we're going to talk about some issues around Toronto's men and women in blue, the members of its police service. But it's not all depressing because we've brought in an old friend to talk about all the math city council will be doing next week! This Thursday, January 5, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: Doug's Anatomy. Premier Doug Ford and Health Minister Sylvia Jones announced that the Ontario government will lean on private clinics to help clear the surgery backlog, which now sits at nearly one million procedures. Of course, Ford says that you will only ever have to "pay with your OHIP card and not with your credit card", but the whole province is understandably freaked out that Ford is opening the door to two-tier healthcare. Do we have to hit 9-1-1 on this policy direction? The Money Split. Last month, Toronto Mayor John Tory announced that he was looking at a $48 million increase to the police budget. This comes after months of Tory warning about a budget crunch from legislative changes, and it comes after years of discussion about social justice reform. It also comes at a time of several funerals for officers killed in the line of duty, so maybe "Defund the Police" isn't as politically neutral as it once was. So how do we make sense of these conflicting issues and talk straight about policing? The Allt in Our Stars. Next week, Guelph City Council will sit down to ratify the 2023 budget, but a lot has changed since last December when the City's first multi-year budget was passed. Ward 3 Councillor Phil Allt will join us to talk about those challenges including the financial fallout of Bill 23 and Mayor Cam Guthrie's proposed levy to raise funds to combat homelessness and mental health issues. We also talk about the varying definitions of affordability and the fate of big infrastructure projects like the library. Open Sources is live on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca at 5 pm on Thursday.

Maple, a Loblaw-funded virtual care business based in Toronto, charges $69 per doctor's visit (or $30 per month for 30 visits per year) — a service that would be free in person. The Canada Health Act requires provincial and territorial health insurance plans to cover "all medically necessary services," Health Canada spokesperson Anne Génier said in a statement. Charging Ontarians for insured services is banned by provincial legislation in accordance with the Canada Health Act. Ontario has insured virtual visits under OHIP, but Maple has found a way around the province's insurance. Today on Free For All Friday: plenty of nurses and retired nurses called in to weigh in on the staffing shortages that hospitals have been forced to grapple with this summer and that have led to the temporary closure of ER departments. Over the past week, Ontario's new health minister Sylvia Jones has been facing criticism for downplaying the shortage and refusing to call it a crisis. At the same time, nursing representatives like Cathryn Hoy and Doris Grinspun say the situation is desperate. Some nurses haven't taken vacations for years and nearly 1 in 4 working nurses in the province are eligible for retirement. Then there is Minister Jones' confusing comments about further privatization of Ontario's healthcare: first saying she is open to everything, then saying no it's actually innovation she's open to and not privatization while trying to reassure residents that OHIP will continue to cover healthcare services for Ontario residents. She has authored and edited continuing education for maternity providers and allied birth professionals in advanced topics and has taught birth professionals and parents internationally. Billie is the Owner and Director of Birth Trauma Ontario, which provides education and training for maternity providers and allied birth professionals in trauma-informed care, as well as providing information and support for parents and loved ones that are dealing with birth-related trauma or birthing after trauma. DISCLAIMER: Trigger warning: loss, stillbirth and poor birth outcomes are discussed in this podcast We have many friends in the birthing community, nurses, midwives, doulas, and we see a lot of incredible care. Please don't be discouraged by this episode. But have a fire lit inside of you that NOW is the time to lean into your intuition and learn about your options for birth. Our biggest advice to anyone who is newly pregnant, is to do your homework. Don't wait until your second birth to take control. Learn about the hospital funnels, and what's on the menu for the choices you are making. In our experience there can be so much good in the birth world as well, but the power remains in your hands. Better care is available the more empowered you are in your autonomy and choice. Billie sees a clientele of people who have experienced birth trauma and/or who want to birth outside of OHIP covered birth. Birth trauma is experienced by 1 out of 4 people experiencing birth and this is not ok, we are working to change this. Billie is such an interesting, passionate human and we loved hearing from her experience what is happening in the obstetric system.
