On this "impossibly short version of the ongoing conversation you'll find at TrueTunes.com" we revisit our conversation with Steve Taylor, Dave Perkins, Lynn Nichols, and Mike Mead of the most amazing and unlucky band of all time: Chagall Guevara! About The True Tunes Microdose Episodes: As we look back on our first 100 episodes we have gathered some of these "greatest hits" - never more than 5 minutes long - to remind long-time listeners of where we've been and give new folks a chance to check us out. Every creative has a dream project: something they'd love to do if they had infinite time and resources. But what if you got the chance to pull off that dream project, and it didn't succeed? That's what happened to Steve Taylor, who poured himself into directing Blue Like Jazz, only to see a middling response at the theater. To him, that result felt like humiliation. This week, we hear about how his experience creating art for a living has changed his approach to success, risk-taking, and his own personal worth. Filmmaker/writer/producer/recording artist/entrepreneur Steve Taylor earned his “Renaissance Man” stripes (Prism Magazine) from a body of work that's garnered him multiple Grammy, Billboard, Telly, Addy, and Dove awards and nominations. As a recording artist, he's sold over one million albums worldwide, garnered two Grammy nominations for Meltdown (1984) and Squint (1993), and made history as the only artist to twice win Billboard Music Video Awards for self-directed music videos. He also fronted the MCA-signed rock band Chagall Guevara.
John Hudson and Bobby Hazzard return for a roundtable discussion of THE CANDY SNATCHERS (1973). Typical of exploitation cinema of the 1970's this is a grimy, mean-spirited tale of crime and consequences. The story follows a trio of not-quite-as-smart-as-they-think low lives as they kidnap a jewelry store manger's daughter. Expecting an easily scored diamond ransom their scheme goes sour and, when they start trying to turn their busted plan into a success, things get quickly worse. The sweat, fear and desperation combine to make for a tense, uncomfortable film experience with an ending that stamps this as one of the darkest American films of the period. I once thought of this as a one-time watch but my opinion has changed. We briefly discuss the terrible crime that inspired the film and how the long-term details point out the folly of most criminal activity. We talk about the cast and crew with some fantastic information from the two main female actors. Writer/director Guerdon Trueblood is also on the record about the entire history of the production and we share a few of his amusing tales as we go along. Bobby expresses his dislike of the reoccurring theme tune and neither John or I can really disagree with his assessment. Of course, that means you get to hear it as part of the show. Sorry. If you have any comments or suggestions or comments thebloodypit@gmail.com is the place to write. We'll be back to cover STUNT ROCK eventually. We end the show with a new song from Chagall Guevara. Thank you for listening!
The musical highways and byways of this great land are littered with the bedazzled corpses of countless, failed, one-shot rock bands. How many of them, though, would be able to enlist the support of thousands of fans three decades after their demise and raise over $140,000 to mix and master a long-lost live recording – and – release a new studio album – and – celebrate it all with a blistering live show at none other than Music City's hallowed Ryman Auditorium? That's what Nashville's Chagall Guevara just did. True Tunes' John J. Thompson was invited to the band's secret Music City rehearsal lair for an extended conversation about everything from their origin in the late 80s to their unlikely resurrection during a global pandemic. Steve Taylor, Dave Perkins, Mike Mead, and Lynn Nichols are our guests on this episode of the True Tunes Podcast as we contemplate Halcyon Days, memory, and just how amazing “failure” can sound in the right hands. On the Jukebox, we take a listen to Taylor's long-lost Squint Entertainment label and how he channeled his artistic frustration and lessons learned into an artist development story that launched one of the biggest global hits of the 90s; (Sixpence None The Richer's “Kiss Me,”) as well as Burlap To Cashmere, LA Symphony, Chevelle, and more. Singer-Songwriter/Record Producer Steve Taylor joins the Tim DeMoss Show today. Tim grew up loving Steve's brand of alternative/punk rock--full of energy & witty lyrics, packed with meaning and way ahead of their time. His songs often tackle difficult subjects head-on, challenging people (often the within the church) without making himself the center of attention, if such a thing is possible. Examples include "I Want To Be A Clone," "Meltdown", "(We Don't Need No) Color Code," "Lifeboat," "I Blew Up The Clinic Real Good," "What Is The Measure of Your Success?," and "Bannerman," among a trove of others. Taylor also directed many music videos for his songs (and other artists) and wrote/collaborated with a number of artists including newsboys (official) As a record label executive, Taylor was very involved with Chevelle, Leigh Bingham Nash & Sixpence None The Richer, Burlap to Cashmere & L.A. Symphony. He has also performed in other bands including Chagall Guevara, and invested years of his life as a filmmaker too including "The Second Chance" (with Rev jeff obafemi carr & Michael W. Smith) and with "Blue Like Jazz," an adaption of Donald Miller's book. Steve is one of the artists (and people) Tim most respects both professionally and personally, and we're grateful to have him on today Make sure to tune in live weekdays 4-5pm ET on AM 560 WFIL!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Dave Perkins is an artist whose musical journey crisscrosses the map of American music. Perkins’ work as a guitarist includes playing bluegrass and swing with fiddle-great Vassar Clements, Texas renegade-country with Jerry Jeff Walker, singer-songwriter pop with Carole King, Americana with Guy Clark, alternative rock with Chagall Guevara, blues and jazz with violinist Papa John Creach, reggae with Mystic Meditations, and industrial hard-core with Passafist. Then, there were the occasional opportunities—seemingly from out of the blue—such as accompanying Ray Charles on his “3/4 Time” video. Pistol City Holiness (2009), Perkins’ contemporary homage to the blues received much praise in the press and online. So too did his soundtrack for the independent feature film Deadline (2012). With Fugitive Colors (2017), Perkins offers an eclectic collection of songs that seem to bridge the boundary lines of multiple genres of American music. Colored by Perkins’ ever-shifting landscape of guitar textures, the collection has been described as “Distinctively its own thing.” “ . . . will break your heart, lift your spirits, make you dance, and occasionally laugh.” “Inspired playing, inspired lyrics, distinctive voice—doesn’t sound like anyone else.”
