It's football day!!! We've got the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday Night Football. We'll break the down game which is calling for awful weather. Which side will be impacted by rain the most? The Steelers are only a game back of the top seed in the AFC, is this a game they may overlook? One of the hottest topics in football is will Shadeur Sanders and Deion Sanders be a package deal when the NFL draft rolls around? Deion came out and said he's happy at Colorado University, do you believe him? There are a number of teams that could use the Sanders combo. Speaking of teams that could be home for the Sanders', the New York Jets fired GM Joe Douglas. It seemed inevitable but some of the details that have come to light are, very Jets. We'll get into it! Of course we have our best bets including an intriguing same game parlay.

The latest iteration of the highly influential Lancet Commission on dementia prevention, authored by numerous professors from around the world, led by University College London's psychiatry Professor Gill Livingston has, for the third time, ignored the hardest hitting evidence for homocysteine lowering B vitamins, misrepresented the science on omega-3 and concluded that the evidence for ‘unhealthy diet' didn't meet their high bar for inclusion as a modifiable risk factor. Several eminent professors are up in arms and have written to the Lancet. In this podcast I interview three of them – Professor Joshua Miller, Professor of Nutritional Science at Rutgers University; omega-3 expert Professor William Harris from the Fatty Acid Research Institute (FARI) and Professor Richard Johnson from Colorado University's School of Medicine - to explore how the establishment continue to side-line nutrition. Read more on Alzheimer's, Dementia and brain health on my website. Read the Lancet report. More about Food for the Brain.

~Co-presented with Commonweal's Collaborative for Health and the Environment and University of California San Francisco's Science Action Network~ Scientific findings can inform stronger policies that protect public health — which sometimes negatively impacts profits of companies that produce health-harming chemicals and products. Industry intimidation of researchers who explore the impact of exposure to chemicals and other substances on human health is a longstanding problem. When Dr. Herbert Needleman found his credibility under fire after publishing data linking children's lead exposure to lower IQs in the early 1980s, he offered this advice to early career environmental health scientists: “Do not avoid difficult areas of investigation. Take risks. If scientists exclusively choose the safe routes, avoid controversial research problems, and play only minor variations of someone else's themes, they voluntarily turn themselves into technicians. Our craft will indeed be in peril.” At a time when strong, independent science is more important than ever, corporations are ramping up attacks on scientists in the environmental health field. In this CHE Café conversation, Dr. Lisa Bero and Dr. Lariah Edwards will share their own stories of industry intimidation, and reflect on steps needed to protect researchers and maintain scientific integrity. CHE Director Kristin Schafer will host the conversation. Lisa Bero, PhD is a Chief Scientist at the Center for Bioethics and Humanities at Colorado University. She is a leader in evidence synthesis, meta-research and studying commercial determinants of health, focusing on tobacco control, pharmaceutical policy, and public health. She provides international leadership for multidisciplinary teams studying the quality, use and implementation of research for health and health policy. Dr. Bero has developed and validated qualitative and quantitative methods for assessing bias in the design, conduct and dissemination of research. She has pioneered the utilization of internal industry documents and transparency databases to understand corporate tactics and motives for influencing research evidence. She is internationally recognized for her work and serves on national and international guidelines committees such as US National Academies of Science Committees and the World Health Organization Essential Medicines. Lariah Edwards, PhD is an Associate Research Scientist at the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at Columbia University's School of Mailman School of Public Health. She is also an alumna Fellow and current Assistant Director of Agents of Change in Environmental Justice. Dr. Edwards' research focuses on understanding the health effects of and addressing exposure disparities to hormone-altering chemicals commonly found in consumer and personal care products. As part of this work, she collaborates with WE ACT for Environmental Justice on its campaign that seeks to educate consumers about the dangers of toxic beauty products. Dr. Edwards also draws on her experience in the areas of chemical policy and regulatory applications and science communication, as she feels addressing exposure disparities requires a multidisciplinary approach.

When a jazz musician rolls into Denver for a performance, it's not often that a documentary film and immersive art exhibition await them. But jazz-great Eddie Henderson is no ordinary musician, nor has he led an ordinary life. A few hours before Henderson played a two-show set at Denver's premier jazz venue, Dazzle, an exhibit called Time and Spaces: The Life of Eddie Henderson opened to the public at the CU Denver Experience Gallery in the Denver Performing Arts Complex. It features archival photos, one of Henderson's trumpets, and memorabilia, including a pair of skates he wore as a professional figure skater. There was also a room to view a twenty-minute clip of the documentary Dr. Eddie Henderson: Uncommon Genius. The film examines the 83-year-old musician's life, including how he overcame racial barriers and broke into fields that underrepresented Black men. In the 1960s, he became a professional figure skater and a practicing medical doctor. The documentary by Michelle Carpenter will screen at film festivals nationwide and air on PBS in February. In this episode, we'll hear from Andrew Palamara, the Gallery Coordinator for the exhibit Time and Spaces, Michelle Carpenter, documentarian for the film Dr. Eddie Henderson: Uncommon Genius, but up first is Mark Rabideau, a tenured professor of music at Colorado University and a good friend to Eddie Henderson. Be sure to stick around for an exclusive interview with Dr. Henderson towards the end of this podcast. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/backstagejazz/message

Try breathwork free: https://www.brendawinkle.com/breathe This episode features Deb Rubin in a conversation about the significance of connection and the obstacles that can hinder it. Brenda and Deb discuss fear as a barrier to connection and the need to let go of outdated survival skills. They explore the challenges of self-inquiry and the importance of self-compassion and practice. Brenda and Deb discuss the importance of validation and being seen and understood. They also touch on topics such as conflict, individuation, and making friends as adults. The conversation concludes with gratitude and appreciation for each other's insights and inspirations. Here are the takeaways... Connection and meaningful conversations are the ultimate nervous system regulator Fear blocks the connection. Fear of not being heard, fear of being judged or misunderstood. Fear puts up a layer around us that won't allow us to be present, listen and allow ourselves to be seen. Outdated survival skills hindering personal growth. These are old coping skills. The brain doesn't know the difference between real threat and perceived threat. The skills may have been necessary in earlier life but are no longer useful. Deepening the connection with oneself and others is possible only when we feel safe. If our nervous system is dysregulated or activated (in fear, stress, fight/flight), making connection might feel really difficult. Conflict is a necessary part of relationships. Conflict is essentially disagreeing. It doesn't have to be violent (and shouldn't be) but deepens relationships. The dance between individuation and society is an essential part of growing up. Our culture emphasizes blending (staying connected in social media) over individuation. What we want to do as parents is emphasize and celebrate our children's uniqueness. This is a new place for us as a society. The more authentic you are, the more able you are to connect with others. About Deb Deb Rubin a huge passion for self-discovery and growth, and love nothing more than helping others evolve in their own unique ways. As a therapist of over 20 years, She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and has worked in numerous therapeutic job settings, as well as sexual health education - consciously blending the best of both Eastern and Western theories into her practice. Her experience includes working with both young adults and adults in multiple facets of life, including relationships, self-esteem, sexuality, life transitions, attachment styles, parenting, anxiety, and depression, preparing for motherhood, grief and loss, and trauma work. She's had the awesome opportunity to work with people in a wide variety of settings, including Colorado Outward Bound School and Women's Wilderness Institute, Planned Parenthood, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Hospital, and Colorado University's Psychological and Psychiatry Department.
