On today's show, we chat with 2-time guest, Michael Sweet! Chart-topping rock band STRYPER has announced the upcoming release of their 12th studio album, When We Were Kings, out September 13th! The new album drops just as the band embarks on their 40th Anniversary Tour this fall. Earlier this year, STRYPER released their first acoustic album, featuring stripped-down versions of their classic hits and a new rendition of "Amazing Grace.” The band is also working on a Kickstarter-funded documentary film directed by Chris Atkins, to be released in 2025. With over 10 million albums sold worldwide, STRYPER is renowned for its distinctive brand of “heavenly metal” and extraordinary crossover success. The group ascended to prominence in the 1980s with Billboard Top 40 hits like “Calling on You,” “Honestly,” and “Always There for You,” and has maintained a global fanbase ever since. STRYPER is the first band to ever have two songs in MTV's Top 10 simultaneously with their hits “Free” and “Honestly.” STRYPER is comprised of original members Michael Sweet (lead vocals, guitar), Robert Sweet (drums), and Oz Fox (guitar), plus the addition of seasoned bassist Perry Richardson stryper.com @stryper @michaelsweetstryper christianmusicguys.com @christianmusicguys

In a pre-MP3 and CD era, vinyl full-albums abounded in Christian bookstores and at local record stores. It's 1986, and today's guest, Michael Sweet, and his band Stryper ("by His stripes, you are healed.." Isaiah 53:5) just released their album To Hell With the Devil. It's about to sell millions in both Christian and secular markets, with its songs all over the radio, and music videos on MTV. Host, Joey Svendsen was in the 4th grade, but found that Stryper album at Family Christian Bookstore and it turned his life upside-down, resulting in music exploration being a full-blown hobby.Stryper was no different than the other "metal band greats," like Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, and Poison. From impeccable songwriting to catchy melodies and shredding guitars, Stryper was on top of their game. The things that separated them from the rest was their motivation to spread the gospel of Jesus and their song lyrics that matched that passion.Joey talks to Michael Sweet about the early days of Stryper, the hair and make-up culture of the 80s metal scene, and why Michael had to walk away to get healthy and prioritize God and family. Throughout the episode, Joey highlights some of his favorite Stryper songs as listeners are treated to audio clips of them all.At top of the episode, Abbie Love, Joey, Tomelex and Jack Hoey III talk pointless homework assignments and spiritual warfare in context of the Surratt's wreck discussed in episode 112. Doc Coyle is back on the podcast! He's one of our favorite personalities in the game and he's here to celebrate his first solo song release “Livin' On The Edge.” The song came out last week, along with its Falling Down inspired music video. We breakdown his take on a classic film and approach and the joy of creating a music video that references such a great movie. The conversation also heads into our love for film and filmmakers discussing Joel Schumacher, sequels having to always go camp with intense topics in masculinity, how masculinity has changed through the years and how classics films will be seen, and his preference of Tony Scott over Ridley Scott as a filmmaker. We also discuss metal fans being negative towards him being in Bad Wolves because of the elitist mentality in our scene, why he feels jealousy doesn't play a part in negativity towards legendary bands success, and his upcoming co-headlining tour with Pop Evil in North America. Petar and Brandon breakdown the week of countdowns that lead us to Linkin Park's delayed announcement and who the fans would embrace as the new singer of Linkin Park, Michael Sweet's comment about not knowing any Metallica songs, and the Cancer Christ frontman deciding to spend a decade or more behind bars for some craziness. If you were a devout christian kid in the 1980's, there's a good chance mainstream music was off-limits. Especially debaucherous hair metal bands like Motley Crue and Poison. Picture this. It's 1986. The Cold War is at a fever pitch. The whole world is locked into a conflict between the Forces of Freedom, and the Commies... at least that's how it felt to 80s kids. But the Cold War wasn't the only threat facing American society. Many feared that a much more sinister enemy lurking in the shadows: the devil himself. During the so-called satanic panic, parents worried that their kids would get caught by the Lord of Darkness, and rock - specifically heavy metal from notoriously debauched bands like Motley Crüe - was a big threat. What was an evangelical teen metal fan to do when the whole genre was tainted by Beelzebub? You fight fire with fire, and send Satan straight to hell with the legendary band Stryper. With insight from Stryper's Michael Sweet, and White Lion's Mike Tramp, music journalist Andrew Gill (Sound Opinions), and historian Leah Payne (God Gave Rock and Roll to You: a History of Contemporary Christian Music) follow the epic battle for the soul of Stryper, the undisputed kings of 1980s Christian Metal who wanted to fight Satan on his home turf - the raucous world of mainstream metal. Along the way, they found that the battle lines between demons and angels can get a bit blurry. How do you win the war when you aren't exactly sure who is friend or foe? STRYPER launched in Orange County, California in 1983. Michael Sweet, (and his brother Robert), met Jesus thru the TV when a Televangelist led them to the Lord. But after a faulty start with ROXX REGIME, they changed their name, adopted the yellow and black colors for stage clothes and production, and the rest is head banging history. Somewhere around 10 million albums sold worldwide, STRYPER still makes the trek across America with classic songs and newer heading banger favorites too. We play a round of ‘Show and Share', how does the band continue longevity, other musical partnerships with surprising names, and a possible ‘inspirational' album on its way before 2024.
