Herstory Unveiled: A Collection of Women's Historical Fiction Short Stories

Online For Authors Podcast

My guests today on the Online for Authors podcast are the editors of Feisty Deeds: Historical Fictions of Daring Women with a forward by Aimie K Runyan. The stories in Feisty Women span six centuries. Within these stories, you'll find that even when time periods and geographical locations vary greatly, women's struggles as they confront adversity are often remarkably universal. The twenty-three stories in this collection follow ordinary women from the 1470s to the 1960s as they rise to meet life's challenges. Foreign invasions, the outbreak of war, rigid domestic authority, strictures of society and religion, the supernatural, love and family bonds all serve as catalysts for the feisty deeds of the women in these tales. Aimie K. Runyan is the internationally bestselling author of The School for German Brides, A Bakery in Paris, and Mademoiselle Eiffel. She writes to celebrate unsung heroines. She has written eight historical novels and is delving into the exciting world of contemporary women's fiction. She has been a finalist for the Colorado Book Award five times, a nominee for the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers' 'Writer of the Year, ' and a Historical Novel Society's Editors' Choice selection. Aimie is active as a speaker and educator in the writing community in Colorado and beyond. She lives in the beautiful Rocky Mountains with her wonderful husband, two (usually) adorable children, two (always) sweet cats, and a pet dragon. Website: aimiekrunyan.com IG: @bookishaimie FB: @aimiekrunyan X: @aimiekrunyan   After a career as a university professor teaching and publishing in philosophy, Carolyn Korsmeyer turned her hand to fiction. She has published two novels, one historical – Charolotte's Story, one a mystery – Little Follies: A Mystery at the Millennium. Her third novel, Riddle of Spirit and Bone, will be released in February 2025.   Website: www.carolynkorsmeyer.com FB: @carolyn.korsmeyer IG: @carolyn.korsmeyer LinkedIn: carolyn-korsmeyer   Christy Matheson writes romantic Regency fiction about friends, family, and finding one's place in an ever-changing world. Her debut novel was a finalist for the 2023 WFWA Rising Star Award, and is currently on submission, represented by Kristina Sutton Lennon. She is an award-winning spoken word poet. Christy is also an embroidery artist, classically trained pianist, and sews all of her own clothes. She lives in Oregon, on a country property that fondly reminds her of a Regency estate (except with a swing set instead of faux Greek ruins), with her five children, two Shelties, a bunny, and an improbable amount of art supplies. Her degree is in History, which gave her the perfect training for researching specific places and events in DARE NOT TELL and THE BRAVEST SOLDIER. She's traveled to all but one of the countries in the books and visited all the sites where the story takes place, some more than once.   She was an oil brat, and attended high schools in Algiers, Algeria, Northwood, England, Clear Lake City, Texas, Beirut, Lebanon, and Kingston-upon-Thames, England. For many years, she's lived in Bellaire, Texas. She and her husband raised their son there. Now they have a rescue cocker spaniel underfoot and travel as often as they can convince their son to look after the dog for them.   Elaine is a member of the Historical Novel Society and the Women's Fiction Writers Association.   Website: www.elaineschroller.com IG: @elaineschroller FB: @elaine.aucoin.schroller   After selling her European fashion specialty store in 2016, Kay Smith-Blum began writing the novel she had been percolating on for two decades. Three manuscripts later, Smith-Blum's debut novel, Tangles, depicts the human costs of the nuclear age and the dangerous legacy it leaves for future generations. “The Calf” is a companion piece, and the first in a series of short works and essays that will accompany the release of Smith-Blum's novel in November 2024. Winner of the 2023 Black Fox Lit short story contest, Smith-Blum has been published in multiple literary journals.   Website: www.KaySmith-Blum.com IG: @discerningKSB FB:  @kay.smithblum LinkedIn: kay-smith-blum-3877273 X: @kaysmithblum   Kimberly Sullivan writes the women's fiction stories she loves to read, both contemporary and historic tales of women and the rich lives they lead along their journeys of self-discovery. She is an award-winning author of four novels and one short story collection - . Three Coins, Dark Blue Waves, In The Shadow of The Apennines, Drink Wine and Be Beautiful: Short Stories, and Rome's Last Noble Palace. In this episode I have the pleasure of speaking with Charlotte Pointeaux. Charlotte is a Menstrual cycle coach, speaker, entrepreneur and mother. She empowers children and parents on the transformative journey of puberty and the menstrual cycle. Her First Moon Circles school, trains global menstrual cycle educators to foster period positivity and open communication. In this powerful conversation, we talk about how Charlotte came to be doing this work and why it is that our collective cultural awareness about the menstrual cycle is so limited. She describes the seasons of our cycle and how we can live so deeply connected to the rhythm of our flow. We talk about how I supported my daughter as she approached puberty. Charlotte shares the profound impact of how we experience our first cycle on all the other rites of passage we experience as mothers, because it teaches us how to relate to and trust our bodies and cycles. She shares the importance of healing our parts around our menstrual cycle and what we have learnt about being a woman, in order to start to really embody the changes that we want to pass on to our children and experience for ourselves in the next chapters of our womanhood. We discuss the impact on the wider culture and the future of the world of increased awareness, understanding and connection to our bodies and our power, in order to bring change to the current capitalist, patriarchal system. Please note, this episode is not specifically about Aware Parenting. It is a bright, sunny and warm day here in Ohio and we are in the living room with Nick and Hailey who are the parents to Charlotte, a sassy and happy 4 year old girl with trisomy 18. During this conversation she is playing on the floor in front of us. She is one of two feature kiddos for this month who are both diagnosed with trisomy 18 and the common theme between them is they were both labeled as incompatible with life. You will soon find out in this episode and the next that these kids are quite the opposite and in fact built for life.

Welcome to Montrose Fresh, from The Montrose Daily Press. It's FridayMarch 12th, and we're here with local news, events, announcements, jobs, and more that matter to us here in Western Colorado.    Today - The US Army took possession of a substantial amount of military-grade explosives that were found in Montrose County.   Today's episode is brought to you by Elevate Internet. Whether it's for your home or your business they offer the best speeds at the best price. Right now, if you refer a friend you can get $25 off! Give them a call for more information at 844-386-8744 or visit them at www.elevateinternet.com.   Now, our feature story...   On Wednesday, the Montrose County Sheriff Gene Lillard reported that The US Army took possession of a substantial amount of military-grade explosives found in Montrose County.   So far, no arrests have been made. The Army is reportedly eyeing a person of interest.   It all began last month, when a person using a metal detector discovered military-style containers.   Inside the metal containers, responding deputies found C-4 or similar explosives, all wrapped in cellophane.   The County Sheriff emphasized that it was a substantial amount, but right now they're unable to provide the exact amount given it's an ongoing investigation.   But Lillard did say that it's possible there was a U.S. Army soldier involved in this. It appeared to have been stolen from an Army base, either here in the U.S. or overseas.   The explosives were found separate from blasting caps or other ignition devices. They were accessible for use and illegal to possess.   Lillard noted that it was military-grade explosive and you cannot even possess dynamite and blasting caps without proper authorization.    Upon discovering the explosives, the MCSO contacted the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit based at Fort Carson, in Colorado Springs. Lillard said a team from that unit took custody of the explosives and notified the Criminal Investigation Command who took charge of the investigation.   It remains a big concern, so to stay up to date on this story, or read more, visit us at Montrosepress.com.   -   Now, some local history. This week's local history is brought to you by England Fence. England Fence is family owned and operated, and they're ready to help you build your dream fence, archway, gate, or deck. Give them a call at 970-249-4430, or head over to their website englandfence.com.   The Townsend house in Montrose was constructed in 1882 by Thomas B. Townsend, an Englishman who moved to the area to pursue investments in mines.   Townsend was also a co-founder of the Montrose County Bank. The home is one of the oldest permanent residences in the valley. It's also an excellent example of the American Victorian style of architecture.  -   And finally, before we go we'd like to remember the life of Charolotte Lewis. Charolotte was born in Memphis, Texas in 1934.   She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior when she was 5 years old. In 1944, at the age of 10 she dedicated her life to serve Christ. She loved the church and was always active in helping anyway she could. Charolotte delighted the congregation by singing specials in church and participating in Christian skits. She was even known as “The Bread Lady” because she always baked fresh bread and gave it to visitors of the church along with scriptures. Charolotte also taught Sunday school, worked at Vacation Bible School, played the piano in church, worked in Christ's Kitchen, helped with outreaches, and much more. The Lord was always number one in her life. She had a heart of gold and loved serving other people.   Charolotte married Wayne Lewis, the love of her life, in  1951. They had four children whom they loved very much and raised with lots of love and laughter.    When Charolotte was in her 40s she went to UNM in Gallup, New Mexico, and became a registered nurse. She was the oldest student in her class, yet ranked second at graduation. Her husband Wayne was mayor of Gallup at the time of graduation and got to present her with her diploma. She worked in Gallup for a surgical doctor until Wayne retired. Years later she became a hospice nurse, which was fitting for her because of her big kind heart.   After they retired, they traveled around in their motorhome and had a great time with friends and family, seeing the USA, sightseeing, meeting new people, camping, and fishing. Then, in 1992 they moved to Montrose, and joined Rosemont Baptist Church just a week after they moved there.   Charolotte's strongest attribute was her sense of humor and her ability to find humor in any situation. She kept people entertained with her quick wit. She loved to embroider. She probably gave away 1000 cup towels. She also was in several bridge clubs at one time and loved her bridge friends.    Charolotte was a member of the Montrose Women's Club and participated in the All Women's Spring Renewal each year.    She will be greatly missed. Thank you for taking a moment with us today to remember and celebrate Charolotte's life.   -   That's all for today, thank you for listening!
