We're continuing our Recruit Reflection series with incoming North Carolina freshman Jillian Fisher. Fisher is a three-time Level 10 national qualifier from Brandy Johnson's. In her own words, she was a little “late to the party” — she didn't take her official visits until the summer before her senior year of high school. That summer, she visited Iowa State, Arizona State and NC State, ultimately committing to Arizona State.About two months later, Fisher switched her commitment to Iowa State, where she signed in November 2024. A few months ago, she was released from her national letter of intent with Iowa State and signed with North Carolina — which had actually been her top choice from the beginning.Fisher's recruiting story is unique in that she changed her mind a few times, but ultimately ended up where she felt she was meant to be. We're continuing our Recruit Reflection series with incoming Michigan State freshman Izzy Biro. Biro was a Level 10 gymnast for four years and trained at Queen City Gymnastics. She recently wrapped up her Level 10 career with a sixth-place finish on bars at the 2025 Developmental Program National Championships. She ends her club career as a four-time Level 10 national qualifier and a 2022 Nastia Liukin Cup qualifier. Biro took visits to Kentucky, Denver and Michigan State but suffered an injury during her junior year of high school, delaying her college decision until the start of her senior year. She ultimately chose to become a Spartan and will join the team this season. We're back with another Recruit Reflection, and we're especially excited about this one because it's the first time we're featuring someone who went through the recruiting process but ultimately decided to step away from gymnastics to focus on academics. This week, we're joined by Leah Fontaine, a member of the Class of 2025 from Capital Gymnastics. Fontaine was a Level 10 gymnast for six years and spent time on the elite track during her younger years. She had dreamed of competing in college gymnastics for as long as she could remember and took six official visits when the recruiting period began. However, around that time, she began dealing with an ankle injury and faced the challenge of recovering while maintaining the interest of college coaches. After much reflection, she made the difficult decision to walk away from the sport to focus on her future. Georgetown University was one of the schools Fontaine had been interested in, although it doesn't have a gymnastics program. She was only able to consider it seriously after stepping away from gymnastics. Since leaving club gymnastics, she has embraced new opportunities — including starting a nonprofit organization and participating in high school gymnastics during her senior year. We're excited to continue our Recruit Reflection series with UNC standout JoJo Valahovic, who just wrapped up her freshman season with the Tar Heels as the ACC Newcomer of the Year. In many ways, JoJo was a breakout star this season. Statistically, she was the team MVP on vault and beam in total points contributed — and she was only a freshman! We're continuing Season 3 of our Recruit Reflection series with Anika Most, a rising sophomore and member of Kent State's 2025 regular season MAC championship team. Anika always dreamed of becoming a Division I gymnast, but her recruiting journey wasn't easy. She faced a lot of rejection early on because she was a bit behind skill-wise at the time. Still, she never gave up. She kept working hard in the gym, held down two jobs to pay for training, and stayed persistent with coaches — eventually finding her home at Kent State. Anika is living proof that hard work and determination really do pay off. We're continuing Season 3 of our Recruit Reflection series with Heather Parker, a redshirt sophomore at Central Michigan University who began her college career at the University of Georgia. One of the top athletes in the class of 2023, Parker suffered an injury during her freshman season that led her to reevaluate her path. She ultimately transferred and found her home at CMU, where she recently wrapped up the season as a Mid-American Conference team champion.Our goal with this series is to bring more transparency to the recruiting process and highlight the variety of paths and outcomes student-athletes experience. With June 15 just around the corner, the class of 2027 will soon be able to speak with college coaches. We hope this series sheds light on the highs and lows of the journey and provides reassurance to those feeling uncertain about what lies ahead. Mitschnitt einer Lesung der anderen Art am 28.05.2025 in der Mark-Twain-BibliothekDie Aktion Berlin liest ein Buch steht dieses Jahr ganz im Zeichen von Alina Bronskys Roman "Pi mal Daumen". Der humorvolle und tiefgründige Roman erzählt die Geschichte von Max, einem jungen Mann mit besonderen Talenten, der in einer unkonventionellen Familie aufwächst und seinen eigenen Weg durch das Leben sucht. Während die Berliner Literaturfans gemeinsam in die Welt von Max eintauchen, bietet die Aktion zahlreiche Gelegenheiten für Lesungen, Diskussionsrunden und persönliche Begegnungen, um die Themen und Botschaften des Buches zu erkunden. Eine einzigartige Chance für die Stadt, durch Literatur zusammenzukommen!  Der Berliner Schauspieler und Regisseur Fabian Busch hat das Hörbuch eingesprochen. Er spielte 1992 seine erste Kinohauptrolle in Wolfgang Kohlhaases „Inge, April und Mai“. Es folgten Rollen in zahlreichen Kino- und Fernsehfilmen. Sein Debüt als Regisseur gab er 2010 mit dem Kurzfilm „Edgar“, für den er auch das Drehbuch schrieb. Für seine Rolle in „Er ist wieder da“ (Regie: David Wnendt) wurde er 2016 für den Deutschen Filmpreis in der Kategorie Beste männliche Nebenrolle nominiert. Weiterhin ist er auch als Sprecher verschiedener Hörspiele und Hörbücher bekannt.Die Veranstaltung wurde moderiert von radioeins-Literaturagent Thomas Böhm.Fabian Busch und Thomas Böhm spielten sich die Bälle zu, als wäre es ein perfekt inszeniertes Theaterstück. Das Publikum war begeistert, wurde es doch am Ende nach Lebensträumen und dem Verhältnis zur Mathematik befragt. Interessanterweise schlugen alle eine Bresche für diese Wissenschaft, die zu Unrecht immer verteufelt wird. Schließlich ist Mathematik in unser aller Leben allgegenwärtig!Vielen Dank an radioeins und Radio 3 usowie den Landesverband Berlin im dbv e.V. für die Organisation dieser nun schon zur Tradition gewordenen Aktion "Berlin liest ein Buch".

We're so excited to kick off Season 3 of our Recruit Reflection series — where we sit down with athletes who've gone through the college recruiting process to hear all about their journey, from their first contact with coaches to making their final decision. Avery Neff just wrapped up her freshman season with the Utes, where she earned four All-American honors and was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. Avery also won the Big 12 title on beam and was a regional champion in the all-around and on vault. She accomplished all of this despite suffering two serious ankle sprains in the third week of the season. This week we're excited to be joined by Missouri freshman Olivia Kelly. Kelly helped the Tigers advance to the NCAA Final Four for the first time in program history and finish the season in third place — the highest finish ever for Missouri.Kelly was a mainstay in both the bars lineup, where she averaged a 9.846, and the beam lineup, where she averaged a 9.853. She is one of the team's most valuable athletes in terms of scores. Among all returning gymnasts for next season, Kelly is the second-highest contributor, an impressive feat for a freshman!Kelly joins us to recap the Tigers' historic NCAA Championship run. We are so excited to be joined by Erin Roe who is a sophomore at Ursinus and made history a few weeks ago by becoming the first gymnast in program history to compete a 10.0 start value vault. Erin also holds the program record for Ursinus on vault, which she did her freshman year, and was super close to breaking the all-around record two weeks ago. This week we have an interview with Mizzou's beam queen Helen Hu, who is a fifth year senior and three-time All-American on beam. Helen retired after the 2023 season but returned to the sport after traveling abroad for a year and hasn't missed a beat so far this season, scoring the first perfect 10 of the 2025 season and the first perfect 10 of her career last weekend against Oklahoma. We are so excited that we got the chance to talk with Helen about that moment as well as her decision to return to the sport.
