El "chef del acero" y la cápsula de seguridad: cómo la estampación en caliente de Gestamp salva vidas en la sombra De la mano de los expertos de Gestamp y en una sesión especial junto a José Lagunar, destripamos la física detrás del habitáculo de un coche moderno: el viaje térmico de las piezas a 920 grados, el secreto de los 1.500 MPa de dureza y la increíble historia de cómo una empleada descubrió que su propia compañía le había salvado la vida años antes. Cuando pensamos en la seguridad de un vehículo moderno, la mente suele viajar de inmediato a la electrónica: los asistentes activos a la conducción (ADAS), las cámaras de reconocimiento o los radares de frenada de emergencia. Sin embargo, existe una seguridad silenciosa, una "seguridad estructural" que actúa como la última y definitiva línea de defensa cuando el impacto físico es ya inevitable. En esta ocasión, el equipo de Auto FM se adentra en el corazón de la metalurgia automotriz junto a los expertos de Gestamp, multinacional española líder en el diseño y fabricación de componentes metálicos de alta resistencia. A través de un análisis fascinante, desvelamos cómo se diseña una "cápsula de seguridad" capaz de resistir colisiones extremas y cómo la tecnología de estampación en caliente ha revolucionado la supervivencia sobre el asfalto. 1. La "Cápsula de Seguridad" y el reto del 55% más de energía cinética La estructura de un coche moderno no está pensada simplemente para ser rígida e impenetrable como un tanque; su misión es mucho más compleja. Debe ser lo suficientemente elástica como para deformarse de forma controlada en ciertas áreas, absorbiendo y canalizando la energía destructiva del choque lejos de los seres humanos que viajan en su interior. En caso de colisión frontal, lateral o trasera, las piezas estructurales actúan como una red de autopistas de disipación de energía cinética: • Canalización inteligente: La energía del impacto se transporta a lo largo del suelo, los largueros del motor, los pilares de las puertas (A, B y C) y el techo, rodeando el habitáculo sin llegar a penetrar en él. • El reto Euro NCAP: Desde el año 2020, los criterios de evaluación de impacto lateral se endurecieron de forma crítica, exigiendo que las estructuras del vehículo absorban hasta un 55% más de energía cinética en el impacto lateral. • Protección a las baterías: En la era de la electromovilidad, la estructura metálica inferior del chasis no solo protege a los ocupantes, sino que actúa como un escudo estanco para las celdas de las baterías. Evitar que un impacto deforme la batería de tracción previene cortocircuitos e incendios catastróficos que inutilizarían el coche en plena emergencia. 2. La receta del "chef del acero": el arte de la estampación en caliente Tradicionalmente, para que una pieza de acero fuera más resistente se requería aumentar su espesor geométrico, lo que sumaba cientos de kilogramos de peso muerto al vehículo, disparando el consumo de combustible o mermando la autonomía de las baterías. La revolución de Gestamp llegó de la mano de la estampación en caliente (Hot Stamping). Para entender esta tecnología, los ingenieros de Gestamp proponen visualizar el principio del herrero medieval, pero llevado a una escala industrial milimétrica y predictiva gobernada por 1.700 ingenieros de desarrollo: 1. El horno de atmósfera controlada: Las láminas de acero de apenas 0,8 mm, 1 mm o 1,2 mm de espesor se introducen en un horno continuo donde se calientan a 920 grados. Esta fase requiere una atmósfera químicamente controlada para evitar la formación de hidrógeno en la estructura del metal, el "ingrediente secreto" que previene la fragilidad del componente. 2. Transferencia ultrarrápida: Al salir del horno, las piezas están incandescentes, al rojo vivo, con una plasticidad altísima que permite moldearlas con facilidad. El robot de transferencia debe colocarlas en la matriz de la prensa en un tiempo récord de entre 2 y 6 segundos como máximo. 3. El troquel refrigerado por agua: La prensa baja y el troquel —que cuenta con un complejo sistema de canales internos de refrigeración por agua— deforma la lámina incandescente a la vez que la enfría de forma súbita y homogénea. Este violentísimo templado transforma la microestructura interna del material en milisegundos. El límite elástico del acero sufre un salto de magnitud asombroso: pasa de 400 MPa de resistencia de partida a unos brutales 1.500 MPa de resistencia a la tracción. Se consigue una pieza ultrafina, ligera y tres o cuatro veces más resistente que el acero moldeado en frío convencional. 3. Una salvación con nombres y apellidos: la historia de Mireia y su Audi TT La anécdota que mejor ilustra el impacto real de esta tecnología de Gestamp la protagonizó Mireia, empleada de la propia compañía y aficionada a las carreras de resistencia de vehículos clásicos (habiendo llegado a competir en las 30 horas de Jerez). Años antes de entrar a trabajar en la multinacional de componentes, Mireia sufrió un aparatoso accidente de carretera mientras conducía un Audi TT. El vehículo dio múltiples vueltas de campana en un siniestro tan severo que la carrocería exterior quedó completamente desintegrada. Al llegar la Guardia Civil de Tráfico al lugar del impacto, el agente exclamó con asombro: «Señora, siéntese por favor, que me parece mentira ver cómo ha quedado el coche y verla a usted perfectamente de pie andando». El habitáculo del Audi TT se había mantenido intacto, actuando como un búnker de supervivencia. Años más tarde, ya como empleada de Gestamp, Mireia conversó sobre este accidente con el director de innovación de la compañía. Al realizar un estudio de trazabilidad histórica del chasis y las piezas de aquel modelo específico de Audi TT, los ingenieros le enviaron una respuesta que le encogió el corazón: las vigas estructurales de acero templado en caliente que habían impedido que el techo del Audi colapsara sobre su cabeza habían sido diseñadas y fabricadas por la propia Gestamp. Mireia estaba destinada a trabajar en la empresa que, en la sombra de las carreteras, le había salvado la vida. El testimonio de Mireia y los desarrollos técnicos de Gestamp son un recordatorio indispensable para la audiencia de AutoFM. El chasis de un automóvil es una obra de arte de la ingeniería de seguridad pasiva. Detrás de cada milímetro de acero incandescente templado en cuestión de segundos, hay miles de horas de simulación digital destinadas a un único propósito: que cuando la fatalidad de la carretera nos golpee con violencia, podamos salir del habitáculo por nuestro propio pie para contarlo. As the final rung below Formula 1 on motor racing's ladder to the top, the International Formula 3000 Championship ran from 1985 to 2004 and nurtured numerous drivers who went on to become future stars. Jean Alesi, Christian Fittipaldi, Juan Pablo Montoya and Nick Heidfeld all became International F3000 champions on the way to Formula 1. Brooklands Members president Damon Hill impressed in F3000 before securing the Williams testing role, which led to a full-time drive and ultimately the championship. Notables who established themselves in team ownership and management included Eddie Jordan, Christian Horner, Helmut Marko and David Sears. Our speaker is James Newbold, author of "Formula 3000 – Where Legends Earned Their Stripes" whose meticulous research into F3000's 20-year history included interviews with over 100 key figures from the era. La Fórmula 1 llega esta semana al Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, uno de los trazados más conocidos por equipos y pilotos y, al mismo tiempo, uno de los más útiles para medir el rendimiento real de un monoplaza. Después del Gran Premio de Mónaco, tan particular y condicionado por la posición en pista, Montmeló ofrece un escenario mucho más representativo. Y en el Podcast Técnica Fórmula 1 estamos deseando que llegue ese momento. Una pista muy completa. El circuito catalán tiene 4,657 kilómetros y 14 curvas, muchas de ellas de alta velocidad. Es una pista completa, con rectas, curvas rápidas, zonas de tracción, exigencia aerodinámica y una degradación de neumáticos muy marcada. Por eso, durante años ha sido una referencia para entender qué coches funcionan bien de verdad y cuáles esconden sus problemas según el tipo de trazado. En 2026 esa lectura será todavía más interesante. Los nuevos monoplazas ya rodaron en Barcelona durante los test de pretemporada de enero, por lo que los equipos llegan con una primera base de datos. Ahora, seis meses después, el Gran Premio servirá para comprobar cuánto han evolucionado los coches y qué equipos han entendido mejor la nueva reglamentación. Pirelli pone el interés. Pirelli ha elegido para este fin de semana los compuestos C2, C3 y C4, una selección más blanda de lo habitual para Barcelona. El objetivo es fomentar un mayor número de paradas y dar más protagonismo estratégico al neumático duro. En un circuito donde la degradación es principalmente térmica y el eje delantero suele ser el factor limitante, esta elección puede abrir una carrera más variada. El asfalto, además, sigue siendo abrasivo, y el cambio de fecha puede traer temperaturas de pista más altas que en ediciones anteriores. Todo ello aumenta la exigencia sobre los neumáticos, especialmente en curvas como la 3 y las dos últimas, remodeladas en 2023 para hacer más fluida la entrada a la recta principal. El lado izquierdo de los neumáticos será el más castigado por las numerosas curvas a derechas. Por otra parte, si miramos desde el punto de vista técnico, Barcelona obliga a encontrar un equilibrio muy fino. No basta con tener carga aerodinámica: también hace falta eficiencia, estabilidad en curva rápida y capacidad para cuidar los neumáticos durante tandas largas. A diferencia de Mónaco, aquí la velocidad punta vuelve a importar, pero sin que los equipos puedan permitirse descargar demasiado el coche. Una vieja tradición. La cita llega también en un momento importante para el desarrollo. Tradicionalmente, Barcelona ha sido uno de los fines de semana en los que los equipos introducen evoluciones relevantes. Este año, esas mejoras pueden afectar incluso a elementos relacionados con las llantas y la gestión térmica, un aspecto cada vez más importante por su influencia en el intercambio de calor entre el asfalto, los neumáticos y los frenos. El Gran Premio de España alcanza su 56.ª edición dentro del Campeonato del Mundo de Fórmula 1. La prueba ha pasado por Pedralbes, Montjuïc, Jarama, Jerez y Barcelona, que ha acogido ya la mayor parte de su historia reciente. En el palmarés, Michael Schumacher y Lewis Hamilton siguen empatados con seis victorias, mientras Ferrari continúa como el constructor más laureado. Pero más allá de la historia, este Barcelona-Cataluña 2026 interesa por lo que puede revelar: tras un Mónaco donde el piloto, la confianza y la posición en pista tuvieron un peso enorme, Montmeló vuelve a poner sobre la mesa la pregunta esencial: qué coche es realmente más completo. Aquí no bastará con una buena clasificación ni con sobrevivir a una carrera caótica. Barcelona exige ritmo, equilibrio, degradación controlada y capacidad de adaptación.
