Clint Carroll, an associate professor of ethnic studies at the University of Colorado Boulder, and a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, gives a talk called "Reuniting with Our Lands and Waters: Indigenous Access and Political Ecology in Settler States.""The early periods of what is known as the U.S. Federal Indian Policy are defined in terms of the specific type of dispossession they entailed," begins Carroll, author of the 2015 book Roots of Our Renewal: Ethnobotany and Cherokee Environmental Governance. "While the removal era of the 1830s forcibly relocated tribes hundreds and thousands of miles from their traditional homelands, the creation of reservations beginning in the mid-1800s also entailed numerous relocations via treaties and land cessions."The early U.S. conservation movement, coinciding roughly with the establishment of Indian reservations, excluded Native peoples from former hunting-and-gathering areas in the name of wilderness preservation," Carroll continues. "The allotment era, from about 1887 to 1934, broke up Indigenous systems of communal land ownership and opened Native lands to speculators in the market. Since this time, access has become a principle issue for Native peoples — specifically, the ability to access lands and waters through which to enact culturally sustaining practices and ceremonies that are tied to relations of reciprocal care."This Sept. 22 UC Berkeley event was sponsored by the Joseph A. Myers Center for Research on Native American Issues, part of the Institute for the Study of Societal Issues. It was co-sponsored by the Native American Studies Program, Native American Student Development, the American Indian Graduate Program, the American Indian Graduate Student Association and the Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management.Read a transcript and listen to the episode on Berkeley News.Music by Blue Dot Sessions.Photo courtesy of Clint Carroll. In this new episode of For The Wild podcast, Ayana and guest Dr. Clint Carroll, a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, discuss the mobility of Cherokee ethical frameworks as they are applied to environmental governance projects for Land Back. Exploring various forms of Cherokee relationality throughout time, Dr. Carroll pushes back against dominant settler histories about Cherokee migrations and relations to homeland and provides insight into what audience members ought to glean from Indigenous philosophies imparting practices of deep reciprocity, responsibility, and relationship to the land and each other. This episode shares about Cherokee Nation's historic plant gathering agreement with Buffalo National River Cherokee Treaty Lands and details of the Cherokee Environmental Leadership program, spearheaded by Dr. Carroll. We learn of Cherokee treaty history, Cherokee relations to more than human kin encoded in origin story, Cherokee place names, and Cherokee linguistic concepts central to the Cherokee Environmental Leadership program that de-center human beings and re-center relationships and responsibilities with a community of other-than-human kin. Clint Carroll is an Associate Professor of Native American and Indigenous Studies in the Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder. A citizen of the Cherokee Nation, he works at the intersections of Indigenous studies, anthropology, and political ecology, with an emphasis on Cherokee environmental governance and land-based resurgence. Currently, he is working with Cherokee elders, students, and Cherokee Nation staff on an integrated education and research project that investigates Cherokee access to wild plants in northeastern Oklahoma amid shifting climate conditions and fractionated tribal lands. Funded by the National Science Foundation and the Indian Land Tenure Foundation, this work aims to advance methods and strategies for Indigenous land education and community-based conservation. Music by Buffalo Rose (Misra Records), Cold Mountain Child, Kendra Swanson, and Crispy Watkins and The Crack Willows.

This week we continue our Hulk Hogan hiatus with a quiet, low-key episode.  Now, to longtime listeners, that probably comes as quite a shock.  Anybody who’s been listening to us these past few years knows our m.o. – we fly through topics at a breakneck pace.  Heck, sometimes when we get that need for speed, folks have been known to ask “Hey, I thought the podcast ‘Whatcha Gonna Do: The Hulk Hogan Movie Podcast, a.k.a., The 24 Inch Podcast’ was hosted by Clint Carroll and Jacob Smith.  When did Barry Allen and Wally West take over?”  I mean, that’s just the kind of creative fans we have around here: fans who would reference Barry Allen and Wally West in a comment about the pace of our podcast. But hey, we heard you.  Loud and clear.  And folks, if we learned one thing from our stop in Mayberry these last four episodes, it’s that we don’t always have to be men in a hurry.  Sometimes you’ve just got to make time for the little things in life, like cigarettes, BUTCH haircuts, kerosene pickles, faking armed robberies, or financially ruining carnival workers.  So in the true spirit of Mayberry, in this episode, we’ll just be having a quick conversation and getting ready to cover Godfather 3 on our next show.  So if you haven’t seen Godfather 3 (or the original two), go check it out on Netflix or wherever movies are sold.  Also, this week we’ll wrap up some long overdue Old Bidness and give you some extended recommendations.  Also, a very special segment to mark the beginning of the NFL season.  Don’t miss it.   Donate to gofundme.com/MichaelVsCancer Follow us on Twitter @WGDPod Like us on Facebook: facebook.com/WGDPod Email us at WGDPod@gmail.com Check out Clint’s other podcast: “Let Us Be Your Dads” Check out our draft drawing video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tc-nYmghcYQ Check out our recommendations list: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1TVswqyZHn-FOOmDAKNFp9dr6sTw4rcrb4Igcs1hB0uQ/edit?usp=sharing Check out our Instagram page at instagram.com/WGDPod Theme music:  “Find My Way” by Magnolia Brown “Old Bidness” music provided by Polyester Robot.  Like and follow Polyester Robot on Facebook:  Polyester Robot (Facebook) Recommendations music provided by Len Binning.  Check out Len’s YouTube show “Len and Jim Take Over” (link) Follow Magnolia Brown on Facebook (facebook.com/MagnoliaBrownJams) and Reverb Nation (ReverbNation.com/MagnoliaBrownJams)
