Released 6 April 2022. This podcast is based on a compendium that resulted from a conference on “Military Operations in an Urban Environment” cosponsored by the Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce in conjunction with the Kentucky Commission on Military Affairs, the U.S. Army War College, and the Association of the United States Army. At the time of the conference, the concept of homeland defense was emerging as an increasingly important mission for the U.S. military. Click here to read the compendium. Episode Transcript: Soldiers In Cities  Stephanie Crider (Host) Decisive Point introduces Conversations on Strategy, a US Army War College Press production featuring distinguished authors and contributors who explore timely issues in national security affairs. The views and opinions expressed on this podcast are those of the podcast guests and are not necessarily those of the Department of the Army, US Army War College, or any other agency of the US government. The guests in speaking order on this episode are: (Guest 1: Michael C. Desch) (Host) Conversations on Strategy welcomes Dr. Michael Desch, editor of Soldiers in Cities: Military Operations on Urban Terrain, published by the US Army War College in 2001. A graduate of Marquette University, he holds master's and PhD degrees from the University of Chicago. I'm so glad you're here, Michael. Thank you so much for taking time to go through this with me today. (Desch) My pleasure. (Host) Military Operations on Urban Terrain: Please briefly walk us through the basic concepts of this monograph. (Desch) Military operations in cities is not a new topic. But the period of time in which we put together this collection of papers saw a renaissance of interest in the topic. It really was connected with a series of high-profile, urban operations that sort of reminded us all that operating in urban areas presented great challenges—challenges much greater and unique to those of military operations on other sorts of terrain. You know, the big thing on the American side, of course, was the famous Battle of the Bakaara marketplace (Battle of Mogadishu), chronicled in Mark Bowden's book Black Hawk Down: (A Story of Modern War). But there was also the First Battle of Grozny, in which the Russian military tried to suppress the Chechen uprising and felt that they had to do so, in part, by assaulting the capital of Chechnya, Grozny. Neither of these operations was pretty. And neither of them, I think it's safe to say, was fully satisfactory to the respective militaries involved. And so military operations on urban terrain became a hot topic. There was a lot of doctrinal attention to it. But also, at least in the United States, there was an effort to build or improve the infrastructure for (military operations on urban terrain or) MOUT training at various Army combat training centers and other Army facilities. I was at the University of Kentucky, in Lexington, Kentucky, at the time, and one of the US Army facilities that was investing in a significant upgrade of its MOUT training facilities was the (US Army) Armor School at Fort Knox in Kentucky. Why Kentucky and why MOUT? That was the reason that we undertook this study. (Host) Let's talk about military operations on urban terrain today. What did the monograph get right? (Desch) Well, military operations on urban terrain have been a pretty much consistent part of military operations in recent conflicts. So, most famous, during Operation Iraqi Freedom, were the operations in the Iraqi city of Fallujah. Today, we're seeing military operations in conjunction with the Russian special military operation in eastern Ukraine. And the Russian case is interesting both for instances in which the battle is taking place in urban areas, particularly in the southeast, in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol, but also where, at least so far, they're not being undertaken,

In this episode, I converse with Dr. Rubul Mout, a Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School and at the Stem Cell Program, Boston Children's Hospital (BCH). Born, brought up, and educated in India, Dr. Mout moved to the United States to pursue his PhD from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Prior to joining Harvard/BCH, he was a Washington Research Foundation Innovation Fellow at the Institute for Protein Design, University of Washington. Dr. Mout is the inventor of numerous technologies in gene editing and protein design, and in the last decade he developed a technology for intracellular protein delivery and gene editing in mammalian cells, termed as the ‘E-tag' method, which was in 2020, granted a patent by USPTO (the United States Patent and Trademark Office). At Harvard/BCH, Dr. Mout works to engineer bone marrow stem cells (Hematopoietic stem cells, or HSCs) to cure genetic diseases of blood origin and uses various technologies, including techniques he invented in his prior research, to engineer these HSCs. In particular, he uses patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) to differentiate them to HSC first, and then to produce and train T-cells that could potentially fight off many diseases. We indulge in a terrific conversation on his magnificent journey through science and life inspired by his innate curiosity; growing up in a poor peasant's family in a far remote corner of Northeast India, near the Assam-Arunachal border; undertaking a majestic quest from Tinsukia to Mumbai to Amherst to Seattle to Boston; inspirational mentors like GK Johori, David Baker, Vincent Rotello, and George Daley; fantastic dedication to scientific outreach and activism; writing outstanding books including a popular bestseller that chronicled his splendid journey; and many more things!!

J., Bera, A. K., Courbet, A., Kang, A., Brunette, T., Nattermann, U., Tsai, E., Saleem, A., Chow, C. M., Ekiert, D. C., Bhabha, G., Veesler, D., Baker, D. Abstract: A goal of de novo protein design is to develop a systematic and robust approach to generating complex nanomaterials from stable building blocks. Due to their structural regularity and simplicity, a wide range of monomeric repeat proteins and oligomeric helical bundle structures have been designed and characterized. Here we describe a stepwise hierarchical approach to building up multi-component symmetric protein assemblies using these structures. We first connect designed helical repeat proteins (DHRs) to designed helical bundle proteins (HBs) to generate a large library of heterodimeric and homooligomeric building blocks; the latter have cyclic symmetries ranging from C2 to C6. All of the building blocks have repeat proteins with accessible termini, which we take advantage of in a second round of architecture guided rigid helical fusion (WORMS) to generate larger symmetric assemblies including C3 and C5 cyclic and D2 dihedral rings, a tetrahedral cage, and a 120 subunit icosahedral cage. Characterization of the structures by small angle x-ray scattering, x-ray crystallography, and cryo-electron microscopy demonstrates that the hierarchical design approach can accurately and robustly generate a wide range of macromolecular assemblies; with a diameter of 43nm, the icosahedral nanocage is the largest structurally validated designed cage to date. The computational methods and building block sets described here provide a very general route to new de novo designed symmetric protein nanomaterials. Copy rights belong to original authors. COP stands for Conference of Parties and this is where country delegations come together to assess progress and agree on to reduce global emission targets. This means working towards curbing actions and activities reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The theme for COP 25 was “Time to Act” an important call for all countries to work individually and collectively to beyond the landmark Paris Agreement to keep global warming below 1.5◦C What is this climate crisis? What does taking action even mean? Is climate change just another trend or is it a critical underpinning of a new world order? During the ongoing country delegations, exhibitions showcasing climate-smart innovations, panel discussions and presentations highlighting realities within regions across the globe, I sat down with Ayesha Constable, climate activist and National Coordinating Officer for Jamaica – Japan Caribbean Climate Change Partnership to answer these questions. In our discussion, we explored the evolution of the climate change debate, the divide between the developing and developed countries – (are the Global South countries getting the needed attention?), the role of citizens in addressing the climate change and youth champions who are taking a stand against climate change.

Immediately after the safety briefing, as we were getting ready to go into the range, the idiot across the table from me takes his Glock out of his range bag and racks the slide, AND I’M LOOKING DOWN THE MUZZLE.   I told him that if he pointed his gun at me again, that he and I were going to have a serious problem. How to kidnap Marines, according to combat training role player

In this episode of the Mandatory Fun podcast, Blake speaks with Kelvin Garvanne about his life as an Arabic/Iraqi role player who took training U.S. ground troops to a whole new level — even conducting mock kidnapping scenarios. During these training drills, Marines are "killed" (taken out of play for a period of time) or held hostage by the role players if they're caught off on their own. "We kidnapped Marines," Mr. Garvanne explains. "One of the things we wanted to do in real time was capture a Marine." Before U.S. forces deploy to a foreign region like Afghanistan, pre-deployment training is conducted in environments similar to the terrain in which they'll be exposed. Since the landscape and elevation of 29 Palms almost mirrors that of Afghanistan, Marines are sent there to partake in Mohave Viper — an intense, five-week long training course. The Marines live there for the scenarios and receive cultural training from experts — immersing themselves in war games against native speaking role players for an all-out showdown. These highly supervised training scenarios are considered the best exercises troops can receive as they live in enormous MOUT (military operation urban terrain) areas built to reflect life in Afghanistan. Kelvin Garvanne attended the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service. He is an Emmy award-winning creative artist who is fascinated by the world and enjoys investigating the context of national and world events. Garvanne is a native New Yorker who has lived in Washington, D.C., Bogota, Colombia, Madrid, Spain, and Los Angeles, California. He has traveled through several countries including Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, The Netherlands, Panama, Mexico, and Haiti. For the last nine years, he provided Islamic culture and Iraqi and Pashto language training to military and civilian personnel deploying overseas. Garvanne continues to develop opportunities to advise and train military and civilians positioned in careers involving global service. He also develops creative projects to expose the human condition.

I'm in the early stages of starting a tech company that will offer a mobile platform to veterans and transitioning active duty military personnel to assist them in starting a life outside the military. I have more than 8 year’s combined experience as an Infantryman in the United States Marine Corps and international security industry. I've been conducting security operations in Iraq and Afghanistan for most of my adult life. I've held positions as a security manager in Afghanistan managing a guard force of 30-60 local Afghan nationals. Dealing with these local nationals has given me great knowledge on dealing with people in general. Its not easy to communicate complex orders and instructions to security personnel who don't speak your language, but through trial and error, I learned. This skill helps me interact with people that do speak my language so much more and has taught me how to be a better manager and leader. I've been responsible for various threat assessments throughout my career, from vehicles movements (convoys), personal security details, and physical security (buildings). These skills were learned on the job in high threat environments and it has taught me how to be alert and really think outside the box, because in those dangerous environments anything can happen but with a proper threat assessment you can minimize your risk.
