Navigating the complex terrain of taekwondo politics requires more than just technical skill—it demands resilience against systems that sometimes work against their own athletes. In this revealing conversation, Coach Lee joins the Warehouse 15 podcast to share his perspective as both an Olympic coach and someone who's experienced the double standards prevalent in USA Taekwondo. The episode uncovers the controversial selection process for the upcoming Grand Prix Challenge in North Carolina, originally designed for athletes ranked outside the top 70 but now opened to everyone—yet mysteriously capped at just 50 participants. This limitation has forced countries to implement their own selection criteria, resulting in questionable decisions that appear to favor certain athletes through carefully timed qualification periods and subjective standards. Most troubling is how these politics trickle down to affect junior athletes. Coach Jennings shares a heartbreaking story of a parent who declined his coaching assistance for fear that association might harm their child's standing with USA Taekwondo—evidence of a culture where technical expertise takes a backseat to political alignments. Meanwhile, certain officials face no consequences for behavior that would result in severe punishment for others. The hosts compare American taekwondo's struggles with Europe's thriving programs, highlighting how geographical and funding challenges in the Pan American region have contributed to declining participation while European camps continue to grow. Yet despite these obstacles, success stories emerge from alternative development pathways like the TOPS program, which has produced athletes now qualifying for national teams and international competitions. What shines through this candid discussion is the unwavering passion these coaches maintain despite the challenges. As they put it: "We're still here, we're still giving, we're still mentoring." Their commitment to developing athletes and improving the sport transcends the politics that threaten to overshadow what makes taekwondo great—the opportunity to cultivate excellence regardless of who you know or which political lines you toe.
About the Guest(s): Yolanda Harris is a former collegiate player and mom of a former McDonald's All-American daughter Zay Green. She has played at Tennessee, Texas A&M, University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, and currently at Alabama. Durmon Jennings serves as an associate coach at UNT. With a decade of experience in college basketball coaching, Jennings is recognized for his strategic recruiting methods and emphasis on fostering a dog mentality in his players. His approach integrates player development with a strong focus on teamwork and accountability. Kendall Mosley is a San Diego State signee and a high school basketball standout. Kendall's journey is marked by perseverance, having received college offers late in her high school career. Her dedication to honing her craft, especially her shooting skills, has positioned her as a promising talent in collegiate basketball. Adhel Tac is currently playing for UNT's women's basketball team after experiences at both TCU and UTEP. Known for her versatile playing style and leadership qualities, she contributes significantly on and off the court through her seasoned insights and effective communication. In this special birthday episode of "It's Just Different" podcast, Ashley Roberts brings together a dynamic panel to dive deep into the evolving landscape of women's basketball, the pressures of NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) deals, and the recruiting process. The guests share personal stories of resilience, highlight different facets of their careers, and discuss the vital importance of building a strong support system around athletes. The episode discusses what's currently trending in basketball, including NIL impacts and athlete visibility. Coach Jennings elaborates on recruitment strategies and what they seek in prospective student-athletes. Kendall Moseley offers an inspiring account of her journey from an unknown to a sought-after talent, spotlighting the significance of perseverance and self-belief. Adhel Tac reflects on navigating her college basketball path and emphasizes the importance of identity beyond sports. Another focal point of the conversation is the importance of social media as a branding tool, reinforcing its role in building a player's persona. As the guests recount experiences from their basketball journeys, they offer invaluable advice to both athletes and their parents. Key takeaways: NIL deals are significantly impacting college sports, creating both opportunities and challenges for student-athletes. The recruitment process benefits from a strong support system where high school coaches and parents play crucial roles. A player's unique talent should be complemented by a well-rounded skill set to stand out during recruitment. Navigating multiple school transfers can be daunting but rewarding by contributing to personal growth and resilience. Transitioning to college demands maturity and the building of a personal brand that extends beyond sports performance. I would best describe Coach Jennings as fine wine because he just seems to get better with age. Coach Jennings just finished up his 26th season as the head coach of the Osage wrestling program and you might say this was his best year yet. Just this past year alone, Osage won the prestigious Battle of Waterloo and both the state duals and traditional state tournament. He also collected his 500th career dual victory. Coach Jennings won't admit it, but he's one of the best coaches in the state. So please, sit back, relax and enjoy, Coach Brent Jennings!
