How do you strategically build relationships? For this Women of Color Rise episode, I talk with Stacey Chavis, Managing Director of Campaigns Academy, where she trains leaders to serve in elected office. Having spent her entire career in politics, Stacey points out the challenges women of color face but makes an adamant case about why women of color need to be at the decision making table, We discuss how being liked matters to rising in your career and how to strategically build relationships. Begin with the end in mind. For example, Stacey knew that for her next role, she wanted to transition to fundraising. So she identified people who had jobs she wanted and strategically built relationships with them. Build relationships up, down, and across. Ideally, you want to know people two levels above you, two levels below you, and people who are peers. This will help you gain perspective about your organization and flag any opportunities or challenges ahead of time. Reciprocate. A relationship is not a one-way street. Make sure to offer value - for example, sharing expertise or information that can be helpful to them. Be intentional and efficient. Given our online work environment, we have less opportunities to casually run into each other at the water cooler. Be intentional in setting up time to connect with people. This could be as quick as a 15-minute zoom call to get their input on something. When in doubt, ask them about themselves. It may sometimes be awkward to get a relationship started. But a fool-proof way to get and keep the relationship going is to ask them about their favorite topic - themselves. Alycia Diggs-Chavis, is an energy healer, intuitive coach, and CEO of BlueViolet Energy Healing. She shares her journey from studying international business at Harvard to working in corporate leadership for over 20 years. After she experienced the issues of becoming an empty nester, she transitioned to entrepreneurship and working with people in a completely different way. Through self-discovery and working with a coach, Alicia found her new calling in energy healing and became a certified master energy healer. Alycia helps leaders reduce stress and find their core through custom energy work in corporate environments. Corporate wellness is very important because as human beings we don't leave our lives behind, but take it with us to work as well. That is why self-awareness, growth, and achieving the state of flow are crucial for all leaders and their success. Women especially need to step outside their roles built for everyone else but themselves. Women just don't build the same type of relationships with themselves as with other people. That is why it is crucial to look inward and figure out who we really are, make ourselves centered, and walk with confidence. A need to take time to reconnect with ourselves is huge and results in peace, confidence in decision-making, and getting back to balance is mirroring directly to the business success.Only when you're learning yourself - you're loving yourself, you're investing in yourself. When you are showing yourself to others - you're investing in others. Let's heal ourselves and the whole world. Show notes:

The pioneering story of the Veldt is a one of one. Twin black brothers from North Carolina in the 80s embrace the alternative rock coming from the UK and record their debut album in 1989 with Robin Guthrie of the Cocteau Twins producing! The album was shelved, but they did get a couple great albums out in the 90s (Afrodisiac is especially excellent) but it never really takes off mainly because labels don't know what to do with black guys making alternative rock. They've soldiered on over the years releasing consistently great music and touring, converting skeptical audiences along the way. Today they are celebrating that Guthrie album, Illuminated 1989, finally being released. Guitarist Danny Chavis joins us to tell his fascinating story that is literally unlike anyone else's in history. Enjoy! www.lebizarrenoir.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

The Nats ended their 5 game losing streak by edging Milwaukee 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in extra innings. Mark (From **Miller Park) & Tim begin with Michael Chavis, who spearheaded a game ending double play to escape a bases loaded jam. Chavis was not in the starting lineup, but stayed at 1B after pinch running for Dom Smith in the 9th inning. (09:20) The Brewers are on the verge of winning the NL Central, but the numbers suggest they have a similarly modest offense as the last place Nationals. Both teams for instance only have one player with over 20 HRs (Thomas/ Adames). (16:40) Patrick Corbin only gave up 1 run in 6 IP and briefly on Sunday he found his ERA below 5.00. Mark handicaps how Corbin fits into the team's plans for his upcoming final season under contract. (25:05) It's the first September that Washington has experienced the overlap of Nats & Commanders since the football team changed hands. Will there be a new relationship between the 2 organizations? If there's one thing that's certain about the missing person's case of Jared Wayne Chavis, it's that absolutely nothing is. As if dealing with conflicting stories from the friends who were with Jared that cold January night in 2018, the missing young man's family also feels that at the get-go, the Houston Police were less than enthusiastic about investigating. Add to that their failure to procure certain seemingly important evidence and it's no wonder Jared's family – including his little boy – still have no answers five years later. Part 2 of 2. If you have any information about the disappearance of Jared Chavis, please contact the Houston Police Department at 832-394-1840. Crime Stoppers has a $10,000 reward for information leading to the charging or arrest of an individual or individuals involved in the disappearance of Jared Chavis. Jared Wayne Chavis went missing January 12, 2018, in Houston, TX. His family fears that something tragic has happened to Jared due to the circumstances surrounding his disappearance. Witnesses report that Jared was in the back seat of a black Ford Fusion when an argument broke out and shots were fired by a young man in the front of the car. Jared's friend was able to run out, but Jared never exited the vehicle, and he has never been seen again. His car was later found unlocked and the seat covers had been removed. His family fears that Jared was killed that day. They continue to search for answers and justice. Jared was an old soul; he was generous, independent, ambitious, and strong-willed. At just 19 years old, he had big plans for establishing a career and a family - and he was headed down that path. Jared has a 9-month-old son, Ameer, who was born after Jared's disappearance, so unfortunately Jared never had a chance to meet his own son and Ameer will grow up without his father in his life. Ameer is a driving force for the family to keep pushing for answers, to keep fighting to find out what happened to Jared. If you have any information about the disappearance of Jared Chavis, please contact the Houston Police Department at 832-394-1840.
