Arkansas has a long history of producing great running backs. And Rakeem Boyd is no exception. His career average of 6.17 yards per carry would rank second in school history among running backs, behind only Felix Jones. And only three running backs in Arkansas history rushed for more yards through their first two seasons than Boyd: Dickey Morton, Alex Collins and Darren McFadden. The McFadden comparisons come naturally: Boyd wears his No. 5, and has made no secret of the fact that he wants to be like one of the all-time greats. So how did Boyd end up trying to chase down Arkansas' rushing records? When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, he and his family were evacuated and relocated to Houston. And it was only then when he started to play football. He would head to Texas A&M, but had to leave after a redshirt year because of poor grades. That led him to Independence Community College and Last Chance U. And after a starring turn at the JUCO, Boyd is making a name for himself at the top level of college football.

With minor stops at Virginia Military Institute and Independence Community College coming out of John Champe High School in Virginia, University of Cal linebacker Kuony Deng experienced a breakout year in his first season for the Golden Bears. A former three sport star, Deng began his career at VMI suiting up both on the gridion and hardwood. Now focusing solely on football, Deng has morphed his lanking frame into a 6-6 245 pound wrecking ball who could be the best off ball linebacker in the Pac 12 in 2020.

It shouldn’t have to be stated, but “Thou shalt not root for the Dirty Birds”. Some may have admired the rise of Lamar Jackson and Baltimore’s dominance this year, but it is no way acceptable to ROOT for a Ravens victory.Fortunately 99.9% of we Steeler fans put enough needles into our Voodoo dolls to ensure Baltimore’s demise at the hands of the Titans in a 28-10, in a wheels-falling-off blowout to the Titans. Well, now, with those unpleasantries behind us, let us CELEBRATE the election of Bill Cowher to the NFL Hall of Fame!! In a surprisingly creative move on the part of the NFL, Bill was notified of this honor on camera during his CBS “The NFL Today” show. Watch it. But do it in private - it will draw a tear.Of course there’s conflict when it comes to HOF selections. Should electees be GOATs? What if their talents are hindered on bad teams for the entirety of their careers? What about Hines Ward?Kevin Stefanski is the new head coach of another AFC North rival - the Cleveland Browns. The jury is out on this long-term Minnesota Vikings coach, but consider that it is the Browns who have hired him. We don’t reserve judgement until next season. Is his success dependent of Gary Kubiak, or does he create his own success?Speaking of Freddie Kitchens, did you know he was QB at Alabama? Do you notice a resemblance to Independence Community College head football coach Jason Brown (also a former college QB)?What happened?!In general - do you think a head coach needs to control the X’s and O’s, or does he map out the general picture, leaving it to his coordinators?

An in depth interview with perhaps the most controversial and widely misunderstood coach in America, Jason Brown. Jason is the star of the Netflix documentary series Last Chance U. Seasons #3 and #4 feature Jason and his team at Independence Community College. We dive into how he is such a lightning rod and polarizing public figure, as well as WHY he's misunderstood. The conversation also turns to authenticity in a world of fakes as well as the fact that there's very little "reality" in reality TV. We also discuss Jason's terrific new book Hate Me Now, Love Me Later as well as his time at Indy and the experience of being followed around by television cameras 24-7. There are a lot of people I meet who I recommend write a book, most don't. Jason is one of the few who not only took the advice but also did it in record time. You get to see a VERY different side of the man in his book, I recommend you get yourself a copy here: www.TheRealCoachJB.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/coachbrupodcast/message

It's crazy how people can make assumptions on how an individual is, based on a TV Series. I was super intrigued by Coach Jason Brown's coaching style when the Last Chance U series went to Independence Community College for Season 3, but I knew there was more to him than what the show portrayed.  Today Coach Brown joins me for an awesome discussion about his life, journey and what he intends on doing moving forward. You'll also hear about his book "Hate Me Now, Love Me Later" which you can find on Amazon. (Go BUY it!)  You'll find out a lot about the man from this 25 minute discussion and you'll quickly realize how genuine of an individual he is.  I'm very excited about Season 4 of the show, but I would encourage all of the Last Chance U fans and football fans in general to always be aware of how media portrays individuals. There is almost ALWAYS a completely different side to a story so make sure to try and see all sides before making your assumptions.  I hope you enjoy this bonus episode of the show!  ____________________________________________________   Where to Find Me: Apple Podcasts - https://apple.co/2syRPkw Spotify - http://spoti.fi/2oVVZ36 Stitcher - http://bit.ly/2sR9m90 TuneIn - http://bit.ly/2Fx5UlU

We begin this conversation discussing season 3; which explores Independence Community College in Independence, Kansas. The first two seasons were filmed at East Mississippi Community College.  We also address an email inquiry: Hi DeShawn,   I hope you're well. Just wanted to say I've enjoyed your last 2 podcasts on Last Chance U Season 3, which is by far my favorite season of the show. Will you be doing a separate podcast on each of the 8 episodes?   I'm fascinated by sports performance and psychology and found Malik Henry's story particularly compelling. The podcast's breakdown of his behavior in the first 2 episodes make a lot of sense. Malik has all of the physical talents to be a star QB, but as you discussed, it seems he wasn't taught the discipline and mental toughness required to succeed and to cope with pressure and stress. It also seems that he was forced to choose football over baseball.    At this point, he appears to still be unsigned and football season is about to start. I had a few questions for you (and maybe you'll cover this in the upcoming podcasts):   What do you think are the options for someone in his position now? The show's portrayal of him didn't do him any favors and it seems most coaches would not want to take him on. He seems to have a lot of baggage.   Is there any way he could make it back into a D1 school? How does he make a comeback from the last 2 years when his reputation has taken such a hit? How does he show coaches that he has developed the required mental toughness and discipline?   Or maybe he switches to baseball? Is that even possible this "late" in the game?   Thanks!   Rain C.
