The IRR's Makone Maja says the MK Party and the EFF have formally stated their opposition to status quo and receptive to replacing BEE with something that actually uplifts SA's poor - like the country's leading think tank's alternative which it calls Economic Empowerment for the Disadvantaged (EED). As we reckon with an administration hostile to equal rights, feminists will continue to fight. To help keep hope, we must remember and celebrate recent wins. One of those wins is the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, which took effect on June 27, 2023. This is a landmark piece of legislation that prohibits discrimination and ensures workplace accommodations related to pregnancy for workers. But is the PWFA safe, or will it be threatened by the Trump Administration's crusade against reproductive rights and justice?Joining us to discuss the history and significance of the PWFA is our very special guest, Dina Bakst: Dina Bakst is the co-founder and former co-president of A Better Balance, a national nonprofit legal advocacy organization that uses the power of the law to advance justice for workers. Bakst was awarded the prestigious Heinz Award for the Economy for A Better Balance's successful work advancing work-family justice in 2021, and the first-ever Visionary Women Award for Women's Economic Empowerment in 2022.  In 2020, she was named one of “16 People and Groups Fighting For a More Equal America” by Time Magazine. Prior to co-founding A Better Balance, Dina was an attorney with the NOW Legal Defense & Education Fund (now Legal Momentum) where she pursued litigation and policy advocacy on a wide range of women's rights issues.Check out this episode's landing page at MsMagazine.com for a full transcript, links to articles referenced in this episode, further reading and ways to take action.Support the show

I am pleased to deliver to you Episode 174 where I report on President Trump's address to the joint session of Congress, the beginning of Ramadan, the history of the Temple Mount, the Al Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock. Jude 33 Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. President Donald Trump's speech on Tuesday evening resonated deeply with people of faith, as he reaffirmed his commitment to religious liberty, family values, and policies that align with conservative principles. His address emphasized the importance of protecting American traditions, defending religious freedoms, and ensuring that faith remains central to the nation's moral and cultural fabric. Religious Liberty: Trump pledged to protect religious institutions and individuals from government overreach, reaffirming support for faith-based organizations.Family & Traditional Values: Emphasized strong families, pro-life policies, and resisting cultural shifts away from traditional values.National Security & Christian Communities: Highlighted victories against ISIS and reinforced commitment to protecting persecuted Christians globally.Economic Empowerment for Faith-Based Groups: Advocated fair trade and deregulation to strengthen faith-based charities, churches, and businesses.  It's clear by the agenda that has been set before the American people by our commander in chief that we, the faith community, have a lot to celebrate - but also a lot of work to do.We have an administration that will work with us, celebrate, and even champion our values. It is also evident that our nation is still greatly divided, and therefore, we have the significant responsibility to pray for our leaders and pray for our nation.

This Global Entrepreneurship Week, CIPE's Elena Ratoi sits down with Arijeta Pajaziti Qerimi, a trailblazer for women in Kosovo's energy sector. Together, they discuss how Arijeta's recent partnership with CIPE's Center for Women's Economic Empowerment is strengthening women's participation in Kosovo's traditionally male-dominated energy sector. Listeners will learn how new technology is decreasing labor-intensive roles, how young women are meeting older role models, and how more women-centered events are decreasing knowledge gaps. Guest Bio Arijeta Pajaziti Qerimi's professional career as an electrical engineer is complemented by her academic profile with a Master of Science degree from the Electrotechnical Faculty, University of Prishtina. In 2021 she has been graduated from Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business in Gender Equity Executive Leadership Program. She has been part of the sector for almost 25 years. The mission at Circles Salt Lake is “building community to end poverty in Salt Lake County.” They do this by building bridges of friendship and community that support individuals and families on their journey from surviving to thriving, ensuring that everyone they work with has enough money, meaning, and friends to thrive.Leading this critical mission is Executive Director Michelle Crawford. Starting out as a volunteer in 2017 and working her way up to run the organization, Michelle is a passionate and kind member of our community, working fiercely to help those with less.In this episode of the Eccles Business Buzz host, Frances Johnson sits down with Michelle to discuss eradicating poverty through community building, intentional friendships, personal transformation, and systemic change. Michelle shares insights on the challenges faced by people living in poverty, the role of social capital, and the importance of community support in achieving financial independence. The episode also highlights the significance of volunteers, the impact of economic instability on the community, and practical steps for fostering economic empowerment. Eccles Business Buzz is a production of the David Eccles School of Business and is produced by University FM.Show Links:Michelle Crawford | LinkedInCircles Salt LakeTeam - Circles Salt LakeUtah Department of Workforce ServicesEpisode Quotes:Being in the Circles program empowers participants to dream and forge their own path.07:35: Once somebody starts their Circles journey, they're going to start with the 12-week training. So, we do this as an introduction to what Circles is and to provide some training around just the understanding of poverty. So, they may be living it, but there's a lot that comes along with that, the social norms of the different income classes. And then they learn the things that we all want to learn, right? Budgeting, goal setting. We teach them to dream and pursue those dreams. And one of our sections of that 12-week training is dream boards. So, we're not here to tell them what their life looks like on the other side of poverty or how to get there. We're here to empower them, to support them, to say, what do you think life looks like for you on the other side of poverty? And then we build that social capital and the resources and the support around them to help them pursue those goals that they've set.Persistent poverty can perpetuate cycles of intergenerational poverty.18:37: When part of our population struggles with persistent financial instability, you can imagine the cost is significant. Financial instability leads to increased demand for those social services, higher health care costs, and even reduced productivity. All of these things strain our public resources. When individuals are unable to fully participate in the economy, it stifles our local business growth and reduces the overall economic activity. Persistent poverty can also perpetuate these cycles of intergenerational poverty, leading the long-term economic challenges for our community. And so, another area that Utah is unique, I mean, in a lot of great ways, and one of those is that our state's poverty level is lower than the average national poverty level. But we have a pretty unique high number of intergenerational poverty, which means this cycle that continues. So, for us, we know that investing in financial stability for all members of our community not only improves individual lives, but it strengthens the overall economic health and vitality of the community.Hope and dignity are deeply intertwined with financial independence.26:38: When individuals have hope, they believe in the possibility of a better future, and then they're motivated to take the steps towards achieving financial independence. The sense of hope can inspire perseverance, innovation, and then the willingness to seize those opportunities that lead to greater financial stability. Dignity, on the other hand, comes from the ability to support oneself and one's family without relying on others. So, financial independence then restores this sense of control and self-worth, allowing individuals to participate fully in society with confidence.

Real Estate Billionaire Cardone Champions Economic Empowerment in Black Communities

DALLAS (AURN News) — Real estate mogul Grant Cardone, whose portfolio reportedly exceeds $4.88 billion (AUM), is taking an unconventional approach to addressing economic disparities in Black communities, advocating for radical changes in how Americans think about wealth creation and financial education. In an extensive exclusive interview with AURN News, Cardone emphasized his commitment to challenging traditional financial advice that he believes has held back generations of Black Americans. "If you came from parents that maybe were slaves 400 years ago, or your great grandparents, and you look at your life today and say, 'Man, I got a suit on, I look good, I got nothing to complain about' —so you have everything to complain about," Cardone said.  “I was raised in the middle class. I was a drug addict at 15 years old. I went from being a middle-class family, brought up, taken care of. My dad dies, the leadership in the family was gone, the man image was gone. The direction, and the strength in the family was gone. And then the next thing you know, five years later, I'm a daily drug user. I get trapped in drugs for 10 years. I end up living on the streets. I destroyed everything, the money, a little bit of money I had, the education that I was being given where I lived. I'm out on the streets. I'm literally homeless. I had to rebuild. So the first thing to rebuild is to admit, hey, I'm screwed up here. Everything has to be relearned, and everything should be challenged,” he added. The entrepreneur, who overcame early personal struggles including drug addiction and homelessness, has faced both praise and criticism for his direct approach to addressing racial economic disparities. Cardone strongly challenges conventional wisdom about paths to wealth creation, particularly within minority communities. He argues against traditional advice about college education, which he sees as a potential trap. “If you've been told that higher education is the only way for Blacks and Browns and for poor White people to get up, it is not true. It's a trap. We have $1.6 trillion worth of college debt, $1.3 trillion of credit card debt. We have the highest bankruptcies in history, with the highest credit card delinquencies and the highest interest rates, and people are still doing this stuff, like, like, you got to relearn things,” he told AURN News. The successful businessman also takes particular aim at conventional homeownership advice, which he believes can impede wealth creation in Black communities. "Paying a mortgage of $4,000 a month and another $2,500 to $10,000 a year in insurance, plus property taxes, plus maintenance, plus the interest — is slavery," Cardone stated emphatically. Instead, he advocates for investment in income-producing real estate and business ownership. "One person can make a difference to a community," Cardone insisted, drawing parallels to influential figures in Black history. "Jesus Christ had them. Martin Luther King had them. Malcolm X had them. Every successful person on the planet has been hated by others that did less than they did." The real estate investor expressed a deep personal connection to his mission: "I have this unexplainable interest in the Black community. Always have... It's so alive, it's so fun, it's so rich, and it pains me to watch a group of people suffer financially when it's not necessary." His message ultimately focuses on breaking free from traditional financial constraints: "We have to relearn what our parents and great-grandparents got wrong," he emphasized, adding that modern wealth creation requires new thinking and strategies that go beyond conventional wisdom about savings and investment.
