On this episode, Jeff Akin reviews Star Trek Discovery, Si vis pacem, para bellum (Season 1, Episode 8). He will examine the leadership approaches of Michael Burnham and Commander Saru. Si vis pacem, para bellum is latin for let him who desires peace prepare for war. And that's what we're going to do! But not the war you're thinking of. Peace is so important for everyone, but especially when people are depending on you; when you are a leader. But you often have to work to create the space for that peace Starfleet Leadership Academy Online Store: www.starfleetleadership.academy/store Follow the Academy and connect through: Website: https://www.starfleetleadership.academy/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/SFLApodcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jefftakin/ Facebook: https://facebook.com/groups/sflapodcast/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCebdT7xtm2237q0f857BBuw Find and follow Starfleet Leadership Academy on all your favorite podcast streaming platforms! The Brightest Star gives us insight into Saru's backstory. This is our shortest broadcast of just 21 minutes, but don't let that fool you. We have a lot of fun talking about this episode.
This episode, we talk about how the story from TrekMovie.com. The epic two-part Voyager saga “Year of Hell” was cut short by the powers that be. And why Ira Behr is a straight up ‘G’. Also, we continue our Star Trek: Discovery Character Prediction Series with Commander Saru. Tread Perilously takes its annual look at Star Trek: Discovery with the Season 2 episode "New Eden." When a Red Angel signal sends the U.S.S Discovery to a planet in the Beta Quadrant, they discover a colony of humans resettled there in the midst of World War III. How they got half across the galaxy will lead Captain Christopher Pike, Commander Michael Burnham, and Lieutenant Joann Owosekun into a conflict of faith and science. Meanwhile, Commander Saru, Ensign Tilly and the rest of the Discovery crew must stop one of the planets outer rings from raining radioactive dust on the planet and the away team. Justin distracts Erik by pointing out his love for Captain Christopher Pike. But he gets distracted himself by a guest actor who offers a Mass Effect Andromeda style performance. The behind-the-scenes staff changes become more apparent as Erik notes the Red Angel is clearly different from what it ultimately became. Justin admits he found the season-long plot less engaging. Thoughts inevitably turn to Star Wars. The Beta Quadrant gets examined as a poorly thoughtout element of Star Trek's universe. Erik realizes Taoism would've solved everything and praises the competent Discovery crew under Saru's command. Also, Justin reminds Erik of A Song of Ice and Fire's Lord Manderly and both celebrate the wealth of various Sci-Fi properties in various formats.
In some excellent BONUS content, Andrew and Matt share their thoughts on the upcoming Short Treks. They talk about the short medium then move on to discuss each of the shorts based on the short synopsis released by CBS which feature Ensign Tilly, a new character named Craft, Commander Saru and Harry Mudd. Star Trek: Discovery – Season 2, Episode 14: Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2 For episode 40 of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Ruthie and I continue our discussion of Season 2 Episode 14 of Star Trek: Discovery, which is titled, Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2. This episode was written by Michelle Paradise & Jenny Lumet & Alex Kurtzman, and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi. So, for this episode, we are focussing on the parts of the episode that our listeners and we had problems with – and we highlight them in our Nos and Hold Your Horses sections. Because this is our second podcast covering this episode, we recommend you start our coverage of the season finale by listening to episode 39 if you haven’t already done so. In that episode, we go over feedback from the previous episode, but also ratings and Yeses. Because we had so much feedback for this episode, there will be a third episode to follow. Thanks go out to my co-host on Fear the Walking Dead Talk Through, Kyle, for doing most of the editing on this one! I finally got a bit of a break! Fred’s Pics! We go back to our previous format and use pics chosen by Fred from The Netherlands, including the cover image. And Fred’s pics do the talking for us! Because we have a supersized amount of pics for this episode, divided between this episode and episode 41 when it’s released. So, you’ll see more pics next time! These pictures cover the first half of the episode. What we thought about Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2… We both loved this episode, and it was probably one of the best ones of the series. That said, though we all (but one person) rated it highly, it does have flaws. Like the previous episode, this episode is greater than the sum of its parts. It is interesting, though, for an episode to score so high in ratings, yet have as many Nos and Hold Your Horses highlighted. By the way, a lot of people are really psyched about Discovery heading to the future but I’m not so sure. It feels like a bit of a copout, to be honest, done to appease some of the angry fanbase, some that will never be satisfied no matter what they do. I worry that setting it so far in the future may make all other series prequels to Discovery, the opposite problem they had before, hampering shows like the Picard show, the Section 31 show, and other shows coming down the road. I would have much preferred Discovery end up in the same era as the Picard show will be, so they could play in the same sandbox, so to speak. Maybe they will end up there? Who knows. More coverage of Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2 next week! We’ll be back next week with even more coverage of the season finale, covering your feedback, our notes that haven’t been discussed yet, and news, adding in some additional news that’s happened since we recorded. While you can respond to this episode, we will not be covering any feedback received until episode 42 at the earliest. You can submit feedback via the Feedback page, Facebook Group, Twitter, you can email startrekdiscovery@talkthroughmedia.com, or call

This episode was written by Michelle Paradise & Jenny Lumet & Alex Kurtzman, and it is directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi. We finally get to see the bridge of the Enterprise, as an armada of Section 31 ships, close in, and Burnham and a skeleton crew prepare to send Discovery into the future. We both loved this episode, even with its flaws. It's a shining example of an episode being greater than the sum of its parts.

This episode was written by Dan Dworkin & Jay Beattie, and it was directed by TJ Scott. Discussion on If Memory Serves begins at 13:41… We begin the podcast with feedback from the previous episode. We get into this episode at 13 minutes 41 seconds. Fred’s Pics and Spoiler Alert! We have been blessed yet again with pics chosen by Fred from The Netherlands, including the cover image. We will show them throughout this blog post. To that end, SPOILER ALERT! If you haven’t watched If Memory Serves, you may want to stop reading here! Previously on Star Trek!!! In an unprecedented move, that many people say was brilliant, our “Previously on…” segment at the start of the show had something we have never seen before. It was “Previously on” from another Star Trek show! In this case, of course, it was “Previously on Star Trek”. We saw some classic images from the first pilot episode of Star Trek, titled, “The Cage”, which was also featured in the two-part TOS episode, “The Menagerie”. For me, this was very unexpected but very welcomed. It also signaled something I already knew but it was good to have the evidence: This show takes place in the same prime timeline as The Original Series, TNG and all the rest of the series that followed. It’s just a visual and technological update to bring it to a 2019 standard, but it follows the same story canon as all the other shows. The success or failure of what the producers did was discussed at length. I loved it, understood what it meant, and was so happy to see them do this. Ruthie, on the other hand, was confused by it, and she talks about why at length during the episode. STDP 033 – Star Trek Discovery S208 (00:32) – Blue Talosian flowers (The Cage). STDP 033 – Star Trek Discovery S208 (00:43) – Talosians (The Cage). Talos IV!!! Vina!!! When Burnham and Spock arrive in the Talos system, they encounter a black hole, or is it? Of course, it’s just a projection from the Talosians. Spock comes out of his state to take control of the shuttlecraft.

Star Trek: Discovery – Season 2, Episode 6: The Sound of Thunder For episode 31 of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Ruthie and I discuss Season 2 Episode 6 of Star Trek: Discovery, which is titled, The Sound of Thunder. It was written by co-producers Bo Yeon Kim & Erika Lippoldt, who are said to be the creators of the new Section 31 series, and directed by Douglas Aarniokoski. You may have seen this referred to as The Sounds of Thunder, as all of the outlets had it as Sounds, but when it premiered, it was only a singular Sound. I’ve already seen several podcasts and YouTubers have it wrong. The Sound of Thunder is correct. Discussion on The Sound of Thunder begins at 17:50… We begin the podcast with feedback from previous episodes. Then, we finally get into this episode at 17 minutes 50 seconds in. To that end, SPOILER ALERT! If you haven’t watched The Sound of Thunder, you may want to stop reading here! Another Big One for Saru… A new signal appears over Kaminar, Saru’s homeworld. Saru hasn’t been back since he left, but since going through the vahar’ai, he has undergone certain changes. Saru doesn’t immediately leave the captain’s chair when Pike is summoned to the bridge, and later borders on being insubordinate when Pike doesn’t choose him for the away team. Star Trek: Discovery – Season 2, Episode 5: Saints of Imperfection For episode 30 of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Ruthie is back and we discuss Season 2 Episode 5 of Star Trek: Discovery, which is titled, Saints of Imperfection. It was written by executive story editor Kirsten Beyer, who is said to be one of the creators of the new Picard series, and directed by David Barrett. He previously directed S1E7 Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad. Fred’s Pics! We have been blessed yet again with pics chosen by Fred from The Netherlands, including the cover image. We will show them throughout this blog post. Discussion on Saints of Imperfection begins at 18:12… We begin the podcast with feedback from previous episodes, and Ruthie’s take on last week’s episode, since she was out sick. Then, we finally get into this wonderful episode a little over 18 minutes in. A very cool looking episode! From the Section 31 tech to the partial spore jump, to the beauty of the mycelial network, this episode was beautiful. This show just keeps outdoing itself visually! STDP 030 – Discovery’s Partial Jump STDP 030 – Bridge In The Network Another Tough One for Tilly… Taken to the mycelial network to kill a monster, Tilly has yet another tough episode, but one that she comes through in the end with support from her friends. This may be the end of that connection with May, but I have a feeling that those two will meet again. One thing I said during recording was that I didn’t feel that the emotional connection between Tilly and May didn’t seem earned, but I have rethought that stance. I can see it now. STDP 030 – Discovery In The Mycelial Network The Return of Culber! One of the worst kept secrets in Star Trek history, Culber has returned, although it is a new Culber, reconstituted in the mycelial network. How much of the old Culber is in this new Culber is hard to know, but if you think this is far fetched, remember Star Trek III: The Search for Spock! Is this anymore far fetched than if it was his katra? STDP 030 – Culber In The Network Georgiou and Section 31! We got another long glimpse at what the Section 31 series may be like in this episode. With Georgiou, Tyler, newcomer Leland and (possibly) Admiral Cornwell, who showed up near the end of the episode, we could definitely see those characters in that show. To me, it’s looking more and more interesting. Sparks fly when the Discovery captures Spock’s shuttlecraft, only to find that Georgiou is piloting it. We think Pike may put two and two together about Georgiou if he knows where Lorca came from. There were some interesting scenes between Georgiou and Burnham and more interesting actions by the former Mirror Emperor that will keep us guessing. What are her true intentions? We’ll have to keep watching to find out! STDP 030 – Georgiou Hands Up

For episode 29 of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Ruthie is out sick, but we have special guest co-host Wes Huntington of the Minnesota Star Trek Nerd Podcast to co-host in her place, as we discuss Star Trek: Discovery - S2E4, which is titled, An Obol for Charon. The episode's teleplay is by Adam McElroy and Andrew Colville. The episode's story is by Jordon Nardino & Gretchen J. Berg & Aaron Harberts. It is directed by Lee Rose. The search for Spock (no pun intended) hits a snag, as the Discovery encounters a big entity in space, the size of a small moon. The entity seems to bring on vaharai, the final cycle of life for Saru's species, or so we think. Meanwhile, Tilly, Stamets and Reno work in Engineering, as May has retaliates.

Star Trek: Discovery – Season 2, Episode 4: An Obol for Charon For episode 29 of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Ruthie is out sick, but I was able to get emergency guest co-host Wes Huntington from the Minnesota Star Trek Nerd Podcast to fill in, as we discuss Season 2 Episode 4 of Star Trek: Discovery, which is titled, An Obol for Charon. The teleplay was written by producer Alan McElroy (I got his name wrong during the recording – it’s Alan, not Adam) & co-executive producer Andrew Colville, the story was written by co-executive producer Jordon Nardino & showrunners Gretchen J. Berg & Aaron Harberts (who were still showrunners at the time). It was directed by Lee Rose. She also directed S1E5 Choose Your Pain. Fred’s Pics! We have been blessed yet again with pics chosen by Fred from The Netherlands, including the cover image. We will show them throughout this blog post. A Tough One for Saru… It was a tough episode for Commander Saru. It looked like we would be losing the first and only Kelpien in Starfleet during this episode, and they sold that death. I had myself questioning it. Could they kill him off? Would this be the right time to do that? I knew we see his sister Siranna in the last trailer, but I thought that maybe it could end up being a flashback or a hallucination before death. When it looked like he was going to die, though, he didn’t die. He evolved. One of his most problematic traits, his threat ganglia, are gone for good, and he feels like he’s never felt before. I loved the Burnham/Saru scenes, showing that the bickering we had seen early on was the behavior of brother and sister. It took a tragedy for them both to admit it to each other, and to themselves. So, what will become of Saru, and the Kelpiens, who were being culled, seemingly as a part of a big lie. Time will tell. STDP 029 – Saru in Full Makeup I liked Saru’s quarters, by the way. Very idyllic. STDP 029 – Saru’s Quarters A Tough One for Tilly… This was also a tough episode for Tilly, and looks like the next one will be, too. The blob formerly seen as May has attached itself to Tilly, and isn’t going to easily let go. Tilly gets a drill to the head to facilitate communications, which had to hurt. At the end of the episode, we see Tilly’s been consumed by the blob. For what purpose, we cannot know. STDP 029 – A Distressed Tilly

This episode is written by Andrew Colville, and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi. This episode continues the search for Spock (no pun intended), Tilly's new imaginary friend takes a wrong turn, we return to find L'Rell's being challenged as Chancellor, reveals a secret to Tyler, and an unexpected ally comes to her rescue, as we get a taste of another Star Trek series!

Star Trek: Discovery – Season 2, Episode 3: Point of Light For this supersized episode 28 of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Ruthie and I discuss Season 2 Episode 3 of Star Trek: Discovery, which is titled, Point of Light. It was written by co-executive producer Andrew Colville (his first writing credit on Discovery, but he’s got a long list of shows he’s worked on) and directed by executive producer Olatunde Osunsanmi. Unfortunately, his name was misspelled in the credits. See for yourself. STDP 028 – Osunsanmi Typo Fred’s Pics! We start this episode with A LOT MORE feedback for our last episode that covered Season 2 Episode 2, titled New Eden. We received more feedback for last week’s episode than we have ever gotten for any podcast episode before! NOTE: Discussion of S2E3 Point of Light begins at 1:04:27. The Search for Spock The seven signals search reaches a bit of an impasse, but Discovery gets an unexpected visitor from Amanda, Spock and Burnham’s mother. She has stolen Spock’s medical records. STDP 028 – Pike, Burnham and Amanda in the new Ready Room STDP 028 – Pike confers with Burnham and Amanda What did Burnham do to hurt Spock??? Amanda hears this and decides she must find Spock on her own. It can be interpreted a few ways how to take this point, but it’s a powerful moment. STDP 028 – Amanda and Burnham Stilly Made Silly The haunting of Tilly by May, which seemed to be a harmless thing in the last episode, has taken a turn to the strange and for the worse. May becomes more insistent and demanding. Tilly appears to lose it on the bridge at the worst time. I loved the sense of humor shown by Pike here, by the way. Mary Wiseman is great as usual in this scene.

The teleplay is by Vaun Wilmott & Sean Cochran, with story by Akiva Goldsman & Sean Cochran. It was directed by someone who should need no introduction, Jonathan Frakes, who of course played Commander William T. Riker in Star Trek: The Next Generation, and is no stranger to directing Star Trek, directed Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek: Insurrection, and a total of 17 episodes of TNG, DS9, VOY and Discovery (including S2E9 later this season). Fred’s Pics! We have been blessed yet again with pics chosen by Fred from The Netherlands, including the cover image. We will show them throughout this blog post. Last time on The Star Trek Discovery Podcast! We start this episode with some feedback from our last episode. The talk about the spore drive seemed to hit a nerve. We explain our thoughts about it… or mine, at least, that the spore drive needs to be explained away, especially with respect to what happens with the Voyager a century later. Although I won’t detail it here, we go through our thoughts here, and I explain a theory that would explain the spore drive and everything we are seeing so far this season at the end of the episode. If you want to know much, you’ll have to listen! Now THIS is Star Trek! This episode advanced the Red Angel plot while feeling like a classic Star Trek story that we all remember! We start with Burnham showing Pike the drawings made by Spock that predict the seven signals months before they ever appeared. STDP 027 – Spock’s Drawing The source of the next signal appears far away in the Beta Quadrant, 51,450 light-years from Discovery’s present position. Pike orders use of the spore drive to get there. Like before, when they get there, the signal has gone away, but Discovery finds an M-class planet that we later learn is called Terralysium, which is much like Earth, but with a radioactive asteroid belt. Like many stories before it, the crew finds a human colony broadcasting a signal over 200 years. It appears the Red Angel had brought a group of 200 that were hiding from the bombs in a church during World War III, just before nuclear bombs were about to be dropped on them. STDP 027 – The Red Angel Church We end up with a “Prime Directive” story (which is called General Order 1 at this point in Federation history) about whether or not the colonists that have settled in New Eden should be told that Earth survived the war and went on to help create the Federation or allow them to evolve their own way without intervention. Unfortunately, the asteroid field is about to fall out of orbit an

We both loved this supersized movie-like premiere! If you haven’t given Discovery a try, this epic episode is one you can jump right in! We LOVE Captain Pike!!! If you’ve seen TOS (“The Cage” and “The Menagerie”) or the Kelvin Timeline films – specifically “Star Trek” (2009) and “Star Trek Into Darkness” (2013) – you are probably aware of Captain Christopher Pike, who captained the Enterprise before Kirk took command, but we didn’t know about his stint as the captain of the Discovery, while the Enterprise underwent extensive repairs after suffering severe ship-wide system failure. Pike takes command of the Discovery to investigate seven red bursts throughout spread out across more than thirty thousand light-years, but he considers it “shared custody” with Saru. Pike makes this episode, and if this episode is any indication, Pike will quickly become a fan favorite, if he isn’t already! They Have Stepped It Up This episode looks like a blockbuster movie! It looks every bit as good as the three Kelvin Timeline films. There have been reports that Berg & Harberts lost their showrunner jobs in part because the first three episodes went way over budget. I was skeptical of this report until I saw this first episode. When I said it looks like a hundred million dollars was spent on this episode, I wasn’t exaggerating. I know it wasn’t, but the quality of the visuals has far eclipsed what we saw in Season 1, which was already made it one of the best looking TV shows going. Fred’s Pics! In addition to our cover image, Fred from The Netherlands also provided us with some images from Brother! Thanks again, Fred!!! If you watched the first Short Trek, Runaway, you may have noticed a resemblance between Po and Commander Nhan. I know I did, enough that I had to check to see who played Nhan. Well, Fred thought Nhan was a Xahean, like Po. However, it’s been determined that she’s a Barzan, the aliens who tried to sell rights to the Barzan wormhole in TNG’s Season 3 episode, “The Price”. This first couple of images focus on Nhan, and how she compares to the Xahean leader, Po and the Barzan leader, Bhavani. STDP 026 – Comparing Po vs. Commander Nhan STDP 026 – Nhan is Barzan Here’s a great pic of Captain Pike, just as Discovery is about to be taken out of warp.

Our Star Trek: Discovery – Season 2 Preview (and Other News) Roundtable! As we get ready for Star Trek: Discovery Season 2, Ruthie and I sat down for a marathon preview session with Steve Brown of the Panels to Pixels Podcast (Steve’s third roundtable), Wes Huntington of the Minnesota Star Trek Nerd Podcast (Wes’ second roundtable), and new panelists John McGrail of GSM’s Maid of Steel Podcast and Martin Donison of GSM’s Arrow Squad Podcast, Tomorrow’s Legends (@tomorowslegendsFacebook Group), and Sibercast (@Sibercast and Facebook Group) to discuss the Short Treks, news about the Picard series and Lower Decks, discuss other possible shows (including one that has since been announced) and then discuss what we expect for Season 2. The Short Treks in Review Opinions were varied between the six of us as far as which Short Trek was our favorite and which was our least favorite of the Short Treks. I would call that in and of itself a success, as they appealed to us differently. I’ve brought down bigger men than you, Picard!!! Sorry, that was a line from The Drumhead… Most of us are really waiting in great anticipation for the new Picard series, with one of us more tepid in our reaction to it. We react to all of the news that’s been coming out about the show, especially within the last week. I think we should go down to the Lower Decks in Section 31! The reaction to the animated comedy series Lower Decks was a little more reserved than the Picard reaction, though generally positive. Some felt better about it after the Harry Mudd Short Trek, as that Short Trek was written by the creator of the animated show. We talk a little here and there about the Section 31 series with Georgiou, which was just a rumor at the time. Since we recorded this on Friday, January 11th, CBS All Access has announced that the show is a go! Some of us look forward to it, and others aren’t too thrilled. We also talk about other shows that have been rumored but not yet official and others we speculate/predict may be on the horizon (including one I’m predicting). Are you going to talk about D
