Unification III gives us some closure on the Romulan-Vulcan reunification efforts started by Ambassador Spock in the late 24th century. Burnham has her own reunification with a long lost family member, and an emotional reunification with Starfleet. Ensign Tilly is promoted to Acting XO, a controversial step, but not totally out of line with command-career path minded Ensigns, while Captain Saru makes an unexpected love connection. Later in the podcast, Mike & Ian are joined by Oyin Oladejo (Lt. Joann Owosekun) to discuss her experiences on board the starship Discovery, teases a bit from Season Four, and what it’s like being a part of the Star Trek franchise. Tread Perilously takes its annual look at Star Trek: Discovery with the Season 2 episode "New Eden." When a Red Angel signal sends the U.S.S Discovery to a planet in the Beta Quadrant, they discover a colony of humans resettled there in the midst of World War III. How they got half across the galaxy will lead Captain Christopher Pike, Commander Michael Burnham, and Lieutenant Joann Owosekun into a conflict of faith and science. Meanwhile, Commander Saru, Ensign Tilly and the rest of the Discovery crew must stop one of the planets outer rings from raining radioactive dust on the planet and the away team. Justin distracts Erik by pointing out his love for Captain Christopher Pike. But he gets distracted himself by a guest actor who offers a Mass Effect Andromeda style performance. The behind-the-scenes staff changes become more apparent as Erik notes the Red Angel is clearly different from what it ultimately became. Justin admits he found the season-long plot less engaging. Thoughts inevitably turn to Star Wars. The Beta Quadrant gets examined as a poorly thoughtout element of Star Trek's universe. Erik realizes Taoism would've solved everything and praises the competent Discovery crew under Saru's command. Also, Justin reminds Erik of A Song of Ice and Fire's Lord Manderly and both celebrate the wealth of various Sci-Fi properties in various formats.

Welcome to Season 4 of WarpMyTardis Podcast, Hosted by KJ The Comic Guy and Mr Chulak. On this episode your hosts talk about their two favorite Sci-Fi Series as they come up on their finales. StarTrek Discovery and The Orville. The Orville: Chulak and KJ both agreed that The Orville has really turned a corner this year as it went from a space comedy to a serious space drama series. The stability of the ensemble cast has been key to this success. The early season change from Halston Sage (Lt. Alara Katan) to Jessica Szohr (Lt Talla Ketali) went so smoothly that many of us (us included) have almost completely forgotten Alara’s name. Good story telling and consistent direction have really made The Orville a great fit in season 2 and we are glad that they are already in production for season 3. The season has not disappointed and gets a strong 8.3 rating.Star Trek Discovery: Where the Orville has consistency, Disco does not. The over arc of this season, while a compelling story, has suffered from too many directors (too many cooks spoil the broth) and a lack of continuity, as demonstrated in the first part of the season finale where if you didn’t watch the Star Trek Discovery shorts, you have no idea why Ensign Tilly is so excited when they arrive at the planet Xahea. Looking at the series across the whole season 2, it suffers from a bout of chaos mixed with apathy. Some of the characters are just not essential to the over arc, but seem to have been given stories as homage to TNG or TOS storylines. Even with all of this, and it being a show that when it comes to DVR, it’s okay to wait a day... It still gets a solid 8 or even 8.3Thank you for downloading, subscribing, listening and supporting WarpMyTardis here on the Geek Culturecast network. Guest: Elise Cutts In Star Trek: Discovery, Ensign Tilly finds out that she has a "eukaryotic organism" growing inside of her—what's that? And why would Stamets' argon/xenon mixture make a good lightning rod? Newly minted Fulbright Fellow Elise Cutts is back on the show to discuss storylines and scientific themes from the first five episodes of Discovery's second season. Star Trek: Discovery – Season 2, Episode 9: Project Daedalus For a supersized episode 34 of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Ruthie and I discuss Season 2 Episode 9 of Star Trek: Discovery, which is titled, Project Daedalus. This episode was written by the newly announced co-showrunner of Season 3, Michelle Paradise, who is currently a co-executive producer on the show, and it was directed by Jonathan Frakes, who you should all know played Commander William T. Riker on TNG and the movies that followed, and has been a longtime director of Trek, including Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek: Insurrection. This is his third time directing Discovery. Discussion on Project Daedalus begins at 13:00… We begin the podcast with feedback from the previous episode. We get into this episode at 13 minutes exactly. Fred’s Pics! We have been blessed yet again with pics chosen by Fred from The Netherlands, including the cover image. We are going to do something different this week, and feature JUST the pictures this week. We’ll go back to a more traditional blog post next week. Before you look at the Project Daedalus pics… We did a flip of last week’s ratings. Ruthie gave this one a 10, whereas I gave it a 9. Without details, I will just say that the episode reminded me a lot of what happened to T-Dog from The Walking Dead. Airiam was a character we finally got to know and then she’s gone. We’ll be back in (hopefully less than) a week with our next episode. Get in your feedback As always, your feedback is essential to this podcast! We’ll be having a short feedback deadline most weeks this season, due to scheduling issues. We’ll cover more feedback from S2E9 Project Daedalus, so do not hesitate to send in your feedback if you miss the deadline. For Star Trek: Discovery S2E10, which is titled The Red Angel, the deadline to get in your feedback is Friday, March 22, 2019, at 6 PM Eastern/5 PM Central or 11 PM UTC. You can submit feedback via the GSM Feedback page, Facebook Group, Twitter, you can email startrekgsm at gmail dot com, or call the voicemail at (216) 236-5449 and leave us a message there. Make sure to mention you’re calling The Star Trek Discovery Podcast when you call. I’m also podcasting on The Walking Dead. Because of this schedule, we are trying to get our episodes down to a more reasonable podcast length. To help with this, we’d like you to focus on a few key points from the episode, rather than discussing everything about the episode. If submitting a voicemail, please try to keep your calls to 4 minutes or less, with an absolute maximum of 5 minutes. We would like to keep our episodes under 2 hours! Please help with that! We failed MISERABLY this week. Links to us… Want to participate? Join our Facebook group! And follow us on Twitter! And don’t forget to subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts! While you do

This episode was written by Dan Dworkin & Jay Beattie, and it was directed by TJ Scott. Discussion on If Memory Serves begins at 13:41… We begin the podcast with feedback from the previous episode. We get into this episode at 13 minutes 41 seconds. Fred’s Pics and Spoiler Alert! We have been blessed yet again with pics chosen by Fred from The Netherlands, including the cover image. We will show them throughout this blog post. To that end, SPOILER ALERT! If you haven’t watched If Memory Serves, you may want to stop reading here! Previously on Star Trek!!! In an unprecedented move, that many people say was brilliant, our “Previously on…” segment at the start of the show had something we have never seen before. It was “Previously on” from another Star Trek show! In this case, of course, it was “Previously on Star Trek”. We saw some classic images from the first pilot episode of Star Trek, titled, “The Cage”, which was also featured in the two-part TOS episode, “The Menagerie”. For me, this was very unexpected but very welcomed. It also signaled something I already knew but it was good to have the evidence: This show takes place in the same prime timeline as The Original Series, TNG and all the rest of the series that followed. It’s just a visual and technological update to bring it to a 2019 standard, but it follows the same story canon as all the other shows. The success or failure of what the producers did was discussed at length. I loved it, understood what it meant, and was so happy to see them do this. Ruthie, on the other hand, was confused by it, and she talks about why at length during the episode. STDP 033 – Star Trek Discovery S208 (00:32) – Blue Talosian flowers (The Cage). But Larry has failed in his job as editor, having allowed these perfectly good podcasts to collect digital dust. No worries, as he's edited the podcasts into one epic episode covering the DISCO episodes "Brother," "New Eden," "Point of Light," "An Obol for Charon," and "Saints of Imperfection." This episode contains Larry's performance of the David Bowie classic "Space Oddity" in honor of Ensign Tilly's favorite song.

Unlike the preceding episodes, “Saints of Imperfections” focused on one major plot line: the rescue of Ensign Tilly from within the mycelial network after her abduction by May of the JahSepp species. Few on the Discovery believe Tilly is still alive, with the exception of Lt. Stamets. He concludes that the cocoon May left behind on the ship may have served as some type of transporter to take Tilly to her home. If that's true, then it means she's alive and Stamets believes there is a way to bring her back. But no one is prepared for the what else they find inside the network.

The search for Spock (no pun intended) hits a snag, as the Discovery encounters a big entity in space, the size of a small moon. The teleplay was written by producer Alan McElroy (I got his name wrong during the recording – it’s Alan, not Adam) & co-executive producer Andrew Colville, the story was written by co-executive producer Jordon Nardino & showrunners Gretchen J. Berg & Aaron Harberts (who were still showrunners at the time). It was directed by Lee Rose. She also directed S1E5 Choose Your Pain. Fred’s Pics! We have been blessed yet again with pics chosen by Fred from The Netherlands, including the cover image. We will show them throughout this blog post. A Tough One for Saru… It was a tough episode for Commander Saru. It looked like we would be losing the first and only Kelpien in Starfleet during this episode, and they sold that death. I had myself questioning it. Could they kill him off? Would this be the right time to do that? I knew we see his sister Siranna in the last trailer, but I thought that maybe it could end up being a flashback or a hallucination before death. When it looked like he was going to die, though, he didn’t die. He evolved. One of his most problematic traits, his threat ganglia, are gone for good, and he feels like he’s never felt before. I loved the Burnham/Saru scenes, showing that the bickering we had seen early on was the behavior of brother and sister. It took a tragedy for them both to admit it to each other, and to themselves. So, what will become of Saru, and the Kelpiens, who were being culled, seemingly as a part of a big lie. Time will tell. STDP 029 – Saru in Full Makeup I liked Saru’s quarters, by the way. Very idyllic. STDP 029 – Saru’s Quarters A Tough One for Tilly… This was also a tough episode for Tilly, and looks like the next one will be, too. The blob formerly seen as May has attached itself to Tilly, and isn’t going to easily let go. Tilly gets a drill to the head to facilitate communications, which had to hurt. At the end of the episode, we see Tilly’s been consumed by the blob. For what purpose, we cannot know. STDP 029 – A Distressed Tilly

The episode's teleplay is by Adam McElroy and Andrew Colville. The episode's story is by Jordon Nardino & Gretchen J. Berg & Aaron Harberts. It is directed by Lee Rose. The search for Spock (no pun intended) hits a snag, as the Discovery encounters a big entity in space, the size of a small moon. The entity seems to bring on vaharai, the final cycle of life for Saru's species, or so we think. Meanwhile, Tilly, Stamets and Reno work in Engineering, as May has retaliates.

Captain Pike’s first officer from the Enterprise – known only as #1 – boards the Discovery with records of the warp drive signature of Spock’s shuttle so the Captain should attempt to follow him. Pike gives the crew orders to intercept the Vulcan’s shuttle; however, they do not get very far before their progress is stopped by a multiphasic stasis field emanating from a sphere that is over 100,000 years old. The presence of the sphere also triggers a lethal condition in Saru known as the Vahari. He confides in Michael that all Kelpiens face this untreatable malady if they do not first find themselves chosen for slaughter by the Ba’ul. However, Saru finally realizes the sphere is not malevolent, but like him, it is trying to prepare for death by transferring its knowledge to the Discovery. Pike reluctantly accepts Saru’s theory and allows the sphere to access its communication system. After downloading its knowledge, the sphere pushes the Discovery away to safety just as it meets its end in a fatal explosion. In a weakened state, he asks Michael to hasten his death by cutting off his ganglia. Although greatly distressed, she agrees to his request and find that all of the ganglia fall from his head as she attempts to cut one off. Instead of dying, Saru finds himself with renewed vigor and courage. Meanwhile, Starfleet engineer Jett Reno comes to the science lab where Lt. Stamets and Ensign Tilly are working to reroute systems that may endanger the facility. The mycelial alien called May escapes from its quarantine chamber and attaches itself to Tilly’s arm. To learn what it wants, they restrain Tilly and plant a device in her brain to allow May to speak through the Ensign, who says the Discovery crew’s use of the spore drive has damaged her species’ ecosystem in the mycelial network. Stamets agrees to May’s request. However, she will not let go of her hold of Tilly, because she states she has other plans for the Ensign. The blob grows in size and engulfs Tilly. At episode’s end, Stamets and Reno open the blob, but do not see the missing Ensign.

Star Trek: Discovery – Short Treks, Episode 1: Runaway We’re finally back! Ruthie and I are back with the Short Treks! We recorded episodes for the first three Short Treks on Tuesday, December 18th in back to back to back fashion. We’ll be releasing them a few days apart over the holidays, so you can have time to listen to each of them before you get the next one! This time, we have the first Short Trek, titled Runaway. A Runaway favorite, if you love Tilly! Who can REALLY have a bad thing to say about this Short Trek? It features our favorite cadet, now an ensign, Sylvia Tilly! Ruthie and I both say that Tilly is our favorite character, and Mary Wiseman shows why Tilly is a favorite for so many viewers! Well, I did… OK, I did have a bad thing to say about the Short Trek. I had one issue with the episode, and that is the Runaway herself, Po, and her Xahean species in general. I didn’t have any problems with Yadira Guevara-Prip’s performance, but the way the character changes over the course of 15 minutes was not believable to me. In fact, I really didn’t like the episode because of it, on the first watch. On repeated watches, though, it became less of an issue, but it was still enough to take the rating down a couple of points. Listen to the episode for more. I also have a potential explanation for “the born at the same time as the planet” thing. Some might call that “head canon”, but if you’ve ever listened to us, you KNOW how I feel about that term! What’s with Tilly’s Mom? I found it to be an odd choice that they showed Tilly’s mom in the form of a hologram, but didn’t show her face! Why did the producers and director decide to do that? Was Mimi Kuzyk, who played the character, just temporarily cast in that role, or is there some other reason for it? It was very weird and a bit off-putting. That’s it for Runaway! So, that’s it for this mini-episode! Ruthie loved this episode more than I did, but I still liked it a lot. We’ll be back in the next few days with the next Short Trek, titled Calypso. Star Trek: Discovery – Season 2 and Picard Show News Roundtable! It’s finally time for us to bring you our long-awaited Season 2 News and Picard Show Roundtable!!! Recorded on September 8th, Ruthie and I were joined by two past roundtable participants – Mark Des Cotes from Solo Talk Media, and Steve Brown of the Panels to Pixels Podcast, and two new participants – Mark Deal and Wes Huntington from The Minnesota Star Trek Nerd Podcast. We had some recording glitches during this episode, including some we didn’t know about at the time. More on that later. We start with the news… We reacted to the former co-showrunners Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts being fired from the show for both budget concerns and abuse in the writers’ room. We discussed the announcement of Alex Kurtzman becoming the new showrunner and James Duff later made an executive producer and probable next showrunner. Then, we reacted to the casting announcements of Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, Rebecca Romijn as Number One, and, most recently, Ethan Peck as Spock. Onto the trailer!!! Most of us had seen the trailer (one exception… and you’ll have to listen to find out who hasn’t), but we talk about the trailer and our reactions to it. We also talk about what we would like to see in Season 2. Jean-Luc Picard… Is Back!!! After that, we then spend a good deal of time discussing last month’s announcement at Star Trek Las Vegas that the next Star Trek series will be focused around Jean-Luc Picard. We reacted to that announcement; we dissected some of what Patrick Stewart said about the show is and isn’t, and we speculated what the show will be about. What we think some of the other shows might be was also discussed. We finally get to some undiscussed feedback!!! Ruthie and I finally go through some feedback that came in after the end of the season. We recorded that feedback separately, so the other panelists do not participate during that section of the podcast. We STILL didn’t cover EVERYTHING… The “Short Treks“, four shorts covering short stories within the Star Trek: Discovery universe, were not covered in this roundtable. In hindsight, we probably should have. On September 20th, CBS announced that the first of these Short Treks – a Tilly story called Runaway – would be released on October 4th. This would be followed by shorts in November, December, and January. We will definitely be covering the Short Treks next time. A few days after we recorded, CBS CEO Les Moonves resigned amidst allegations of sexual harassment, and since he’s been the driving force behind CBS All Access, I’m sure we will have more to say about this next time. We also didn’t talk much about the existing characters, some of the people involved in the Picard show, like Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon, who also wrote one of the Short Treks, TNG cast talking about the Pi

Double check your TOS this week (that's Terms of Service) as Dr. David A. Banks comes back to the show to assess the state of data security and implementation in the Star Trek universe! No one in Trek has an ID or a social media account or watches cable news . . . instead, they're a bunch of Shakespeare-loving, flute-playing beatniks who take their benevolent surveillance state for granted. How did humanity go from dragging Zuck up on Capitol Hill to being OK with having to argue with a computer to keep from dying in the cold of space? In this wide-ranging talk, we look at Trek's conspicuous lack of data privacy, the crew's Victorian pastimes, the role of the media in Trek, "big data" (not Data), and we ask, "Just who's on the Federation Council, anyway?" Plus, we talk future news networks, having "admin" as your auto-destruct password, how the cop procedural killed the western, the David Simon season of DS9, scamming your Andorian grandma's welfare, losing the Spotify servers in WW3, Ensign Tilly's Instagram account, and an Elon Musk hot take!It is your civic duty to listen to this show!Follow David on Twitter and check out his website!http://www.twitter.com/da_bankshttp://www.davidabanks.orgRead Shannon Mattern's article, "Databodies in Codespace"!https://placesjournal.org/article/databodies-in-codespace/Hit the books and learn more about the issues on the show!Treknologyhttps://amzn.to/2MTzABhBiopolitics: An Advanced Introductionhttps://amzn.to/2NnfEpQEverybody Lieshttps://amzn.to/2CqdJg2Join our crew on Patreon and get access to our new feature, Stellar Commentaries!http://www.patreon.com/eistpodClick through our Amazon link on enterprisingindividuals.com to support the show!http://www.enterprisingindividuals.comhttps://www.amazon.com/?tag=jet01-20&linkCode=ezFollow us on Twitter and Facebook for Trek news and updates!http://www.twitter.com/eistpodhttp://www.facebook.com/eistpod

Star Trek: Discovery – Season 1 Roundtable! It’s finally time for us to bring you our long-awaited Season 1 Roundtable!!! Recorded on March 30th, Ruthie and I were joined by my former co-host Adam, of The Nerfherder Council Podcast and Steve of the Panels to Pixels Podcast. Unfortunately, our stellar feedback contributor Mark, from Solo Talk Media, was sick on this night. Steve was able to fill the fourth seat, on short notice, and he was great! We also learn about his… well… let’s say Steve REALLY loves Denise Crosby! Starting with the season as a whole… We had some discussion as to whether the serialized format of the show led to us not being able to highlight specific episodes. We had a split vote. The Mirror Universe! When we had our first roundtable, we hadn’t gone to the Mirror Universe yet, so we talk about the Mirror Universe in detail, and its impact on the season. You can’t talk about the Mirror Universe without talking about Lorca!!! Jason Isaacs was incredible in the role of Captain Gabriel Lorca, a Federation Captain with a different way of doing things. Many were complaining that he did not act like a Starfleet captain. We later learn why… he’s from the Mirror Universe! Mirror Georgiou is an interesting character… The Mirror Georgiou, former emperor of the Terran Empire, now stranded in the Prime Universe, we all agreed is a very interesting character, and we hope that we’ll get to see a lot of her next season. If you haven’t seen it yet, check out the bonus scene that was shown at WonderCon a few weeks ago, with Georgiou and a representative from an organization you may have heard of! I said the last episode that I wondered if Georgiou would become an agent of Section 31, or running the whole thing. After watching that scene, it seems that I may have been right! Yeah, Tyler, Voq, the Klingons in general and the war… We’re all a bit underwhelmed by the Tyler/Voq story and how little we got to see of the war. Of course, we can’t go an episode without talking about how much we dislike the Klingons… big shock there. All the rest We go a long way into this episode before we really talk much about Burnham at all. Tilly’s character we all love, and we also discuss Saru and Stamets. We hope to see more of the bridge crew next season, which is why I picked this image for the episode! NCC-17… We had this roundtable before the recent announcement of Anson Mount taking the role of Captain Pike of the Enterprise in Season 2. We still wonder who will take the Discovery’s captain’s chair. It could be Pike’s Number One (as seen in the TOS pilot episode The Cage), Saru, or someone else, even a not dead Prime Lorca. We’ll still have to guess. We still wonder how much the Enterprise will play into Season 2, as well as how well the show will fit into canon. So that’s it… and remember to pour one out to Lieutenant Yar for Steve! I could use your help… We last talk about whether or not we are dropping CBS All Access. The vote was 2 dropping, 1 keeping, and 1 abstention. Unfortunately, though I would love to keep watching the show, I had to drop my subscription, due to financia

Star Trek: Discovery – Season 1, Episode 15: Will You Take My Hand? There was a lot to say about Star Trek: Discovery S1E15, which is titled Will You Take My Hand? It was a season finale, after all, right? In fact, like last week, it took extra time to get this episode to you as a result. More about Season 1, Episode 14: The War Without, The War Within Before we get going and talk about the season finale, we got more feedback about last week’s episode and some pre-finale speculation. We share that feedback about the penultimate episode! Fred’s pics… Part 5! Fred from The Netherlands shared more pics again this week, showing us more wonderful use of lighting in the season finale! I have used one of those pics as the featured image for this episode, and a couple more below. If you want to see them all, you can see Fred’s image collection from the episode here. You’re no Captain Georgiou, Emperor!!! It seems that not all Starfleet captains from the Mirror Universe are good at hiding in plain sight! During his time in the Prime Universe, Lorca was able to pass himself as a Federation captain, albeit with some unconventional tendencies. Emperor Georgiou, on the other hand, doesn’t even TRY to hide her true self, despite Admiral Cornwell installing her as the long thought dead Captain Georgiou. The way she conducted herself on the Bridge was quite shocking, but also right in character. I was a bit surprised that she survived the episode, but when I think of the possibility of her as this crew’s longtime antagonist, like a Q, Gul Dukat or even Daniels, it makes me giddy! I still wonder if she will end up an agent of Section 31, or running the whole thing. Maybe she’ll try to start a new empire? Who knows, but I look forward to seeing her again! NCC-17… Yup, that’s right!!! At the end of this episode, Discovery answers a distress call from… you guessed it… the USS Enterprise NCC-1701!!! Now, in this era, sometime around the Kirk is not the Captain of the Enterprise yet. Instead, his predecessor, Captain Christopher Pike, is the Captain. However, Sarek’s son and Burnham’s adopted brother, Spock, does serve on this era’s Enterprise. We can only hope we’ll see this Enterprise in Season 2. Will Zachary Quinto reprise his role, or will they cast someone else as another version of Spock? And will it be Bruce Greenwood, who plays Pike in the 2009 and 2013 reboot films, reprising the role, or will it be someone new? What about the enigmatic Number One, who was played by the late Majel Barrett in The Cage (the original TOS pilot)? Some called the appearance of the Enterprise as fan service, and Ruthie is a little trepidatious on how this might affect canon next season. I say bring it on!
