On this edition of Parallax Views w/ J.G. Michae, journalist and political commentator Jeet Heer of The Nation returns for a deep dive into the 2024 U.S. presidential election, the failings of centrist Democrats, and the implications of a potential second Trump administration. Key topics discussed include: Bernie Sanders' Warning: Jeet Heer echoes Bernie Sanders' critique that Democrats have abandoned the working-class vote. The conversation explores how the party's failure to promote antitrust actions, like those spearheaded by Lina Khan, and Kamala Harris's outreach to billionaires such as Mark Cuban, have alienated voters. Trump's Anti-System Appeal: Heer analyzes Donald Trump's resonance with anti-system politics in contrast to Democrats' status-quo messaging, which he argues doomed Harris's campaign. We also discuss the Harris campaign going after the votes of moderate Republicans and cozying up to Liz Cheney (and getting an endorsement from Dick Cheney). Shock-and-Awe Nominations: The discussion examines Trump's picks for key positions—Matt Gaetz as Attorney General, Tulsi Gabbard as DNI, Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense, and RFK Jr. at HHS—and their potential to destabilize the political landscape. Jeet also gives his view on the strategy undergirding Trump's picks Mafia Governance and NATO: Jeet predicts that a second Trump term would involve a governance style favoring loyalists, with significant repercussions for NATO and European allies. Freedom of Speech Under Siege: Heer warns that free speech could be the first casualty of a second Trump term, with centrists potentially supporting crackdowns on pro-Palestinian protesters. The MAGA Antiwar Mirage: Trump's antiwar rhetoric is dissected as a façade, with Heer pointing out hawkish tendencies toward Mexico and Ukraine within MAGA ranks. The episode opens with a reflection on Antonio Gramsci's famous quote about living in "a time of monsters," setting the tone for a discussion on the political chaos of the present moment. Jeet also provides a historical perspective, linking Trumpism to the conspiratorial tendencies of the 20th-century Old Right and groups like the John Birch Society. This thought-provoking conversation unpacks the stakes of 2024, from systemic political failures to the looming threats of authoritarianism and international instability under a second Trump administration.

We're excited to share with you a special bonus episode as we reflect on the year and look ahead to 2024. We return again to Vital Village Networks' annual National Community Leadership Summit, and tune in this time to our 2022 keynote conversation with writer, storyteller, and educator, Tracey Michae'l Lewis-Giggetts. She is the award-winning author of Black Joy and shares with us a powerful reflection of what it means to make room for joy -- in all of its forms -- and what it looks like for joy to co-exist in the same vessel as pain, grief, and trauma. She draws upon deeply personal and painful experiences to deepen our understanding of Black joy and what it can offer all of us as a path forward to healing and restoration. We hope you enjoy this conversation and look forward to connecting in the new year. We also discuss the beauty of Loretta Devine, Danielle Harris breaking out from her childhood horror-roles, and how we chose to celebrate Halloween this year... but we DID, however, forget to mention that the creepy janitor is played by horror vet Julian Richings! In this episode, right at the closing of May's Mental Health Awareness Month, we tap the shoulder of highly-acclaimed 'Black Joy' author Tracey Michae'l Lewis-Giggetts. In an inspiring story, Tracey discusses how she "PR'd" a simple guest essay on Black Joy for the Washington Post, into a globally renowned best-selling title -- from one of the top publishers in the world. In discussing 'Black Joy' and how to find joy during traumatic or discouraging times -- Tracey's candid depiction and characterization of how the Black community accesses joy as its own form of resistance -- is always prime for discussion. Later on, Tracey and Leah dive deeper into the simple concept of utilizing the breath (or deep breathing) as a variation of joy. Known for its healing properties, the concept of breath work is widely accessed during meditation, yoga, mindfulness and many other global modalities as a tool to battling many of the causes of mental health disturbances or mental distress.Read Tracey's original Washington Post Essay on Black Joy HereGrab your own copy of 'Black Joy' HerePre-Order Tracey's upcoming book, 'Then They Came for Mine: Healing from the Trauma of Racial Violence' HereSupport the show
In this episode of Black Power Moves, part of the Ebony Covering Black America Podcast Network, we're speaking to Tracey Michae'l Lewis-Giggets, New York Times Best-Selling Author. She is the critically-acclaimed author of fifteen books, and her writing has appeared in The Washington Post, Essence, Oprah Daily, and more. When Tracey wrote a piece for The Washington Post on Black joy, she had no idea it would resonate with countless people across the U.S. She celebrates Black joy as a tool for personal and collective healing, whether racism is conquered or not. In BLACK JOY: Stories of Resistance, Resilience, and Restoration delivers a timely collection of intimate, uplifting, and powerful essays. Unlike happiness, which is fleeting, Black joy is ever-present yet oft-overlooked, rooted in self-compassion despite a world all-too-ready to criticize Black folks. The book offers transformative guidance and a profound reflection on the complexity of the Black experience. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
