In Episode 39 of "The Choral Director's Toolbox," host Dr. William Baker takes on "The Language of Spirituals," examining how conductors can approach this treasured repertoire with integrity, respect, and scholarship. From questions of dialect and diction to the politics of performance, Dr. Baker argues for historical authenticity over political correctness. This week's listener question revisits the challenge of Christmas programming, asking whether seasonal music should be moved to other times of year. Today's inspiration is Pacem, a moving setting of "Dona Nobis Pacem" by Atlanta composer Karin R. Banks, performed by the New South Festival Singers at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival. Join us for a thought-provoking episode on language, history, and the living power of choral music.
A central tenet of the MAGA movement is the Trump administration's "America First" foreign-policy agenda. To fulfill this agenda, it has slashed foreign aid, launched a trade war with the United States' most reliable trading partners, and threatened to abandon NATO and our most trusted allies. Informed by Trump's transactional approach to international relations, such actions flout the existing liberal world order, which has worked to promote democracy, human rights, free trade, and the freedom of movement since the end of World War II. They also betray the very idea of a shared humanity, which is profoundly antithetical to Catholic Social Teaching. On this fourth, and final, episode of "The Counterweight," associate editor Griffin Oleynick speaks with Loyola Chicago's Miguel Diaz, the U.S. ambassador to the Holy See under President Barack Obama, about the Trump administration's foreign policy, Diaz's experiences as a diplomat, and what the “America First” agenda means for the international community—and for the United States. Diaz also discusses how Catholic Social Teaching can counter this agenda by championing foreign policies that recognize the existing liberal order, support human rights, and act in service of the common good. Active soldiers who fight in war are good soldiers and therefore they suffer. Unlike civilians, active soldiers have the duty of being disciplined and fight to obey their commanding officer who enlisted them. Second Timothy 2:3–4 highlights three things about good soldiers: 1. Good Soldiers are Dedicated to the Gospel Christ 2. Good Soldiers are Disciplined in Service to Christ 3. Good Soldiers are Devoted to the Person of Christ

Plus, Dave opens up about his wife's miraculous healing and how walking through valleys as a family creates unbreakable bonds. Top 5 Quotes: "My strength points my kids to me as their savior, but my weakness points them to who my savior is." "Our families aren't broken and need fixing—they are gardens in need of nurturing." "The beauty of parenting is marked more by weakness than strength. No one has a bird's eye view into the messiness of someone's life other than a spouse and children—they see it all." "You can change behavior through control, but you cannot change a heart." "Isolation puts a magnifying glass on pain, and us guys—some of us are professional isolators." Key Takeaways: The depth of relationship you experience with teenagers was built during their childhood years through consistent presence and creating a safe space An agricultural approach to family life focuses on long-term nurturing rather than quick fixes and immediate results Ancient practices like prayer retreats, sacred meals, and singing together can transform modern family life Weakness and vulnerability in parenting creates deeper connection than always being the strong hero Spiritual family—mentors, spiritual grandparents, and community—multiplies the impact of seeing, knowing, and celebrating your children Isolation magnifies pain, while community provides perspective and hope during difficult seasons GUEST Dave Brickey is a lead pastor in the Northwest suburbs of Minnesota and father of four children in the graduation phase. Saatejuht on Erik Boltowski
23 Jesus answered, and said to him: If any one love me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him, and will make our abode with him.Respondit Jesus, et dixit ei : Si quis diligit me, sermonem meum servabit, et Pater meus diliget eum, et ad eum veniemus, et mansionem apud eum faciemus; 24 He that loveth me not, keepeth not my words. And the word which you have heard, is not mine; but the Father's who sent me.qui non diligit me, sermones meos non servat. 25 These things have I spoken to you, abiding with you.Haec locutus sum vobis apud vos manens. 26 But the Paraclete, the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring all things to your mind, whatsoever I shall have said to you.Paraclitus autem Spiritus Sanctus, quem mittet Pater in nomine meo, ille vos docebit omnia, et suggeret vobis omnia quaecumque dixero vobis. 27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, do I give unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be afraid.Pacem relinquo vobis, pacem meam do vobis : non quomodo mundus dat, ego do vobis. Non turbetur cor vestrum, neque formidet. 28 You have heard that I said to you: I go away, and I come unto you. If you loved me, you would indeed be glad, because I go to the Father: for the Father is greater than I.Audistis quia ego dixi vobis : Vado, et venio ad vos. Si diligeretis me, gauderetis utique, quia vado ad Patrem : quia Pater major me est. 29 And now I have told you before it comes to pass: that when it shall come to pass, you may believe. 30 I will not now speak many things with you. For the prince of this world cometh, and in me he hath not any thing. 31 But that the world may know, that I love the Father: and as the Father hath given me commandment, so do I: Arise, let us go hence. Surgite, eamus hinc.St John tells us that Jesus had foretold to his disciples the coming of the Holy Ghost; it was left for the Paraclete to complete the training of the Apostles and to endow them with strength and divine light.
Saatejuht on Erik Boltowski

rWotD Episode 2915: Si vis pacem, para bellum Welcome to Random Wiki of the Day, your journey through Wikipedia's vast and varied content, one random article at a time. The random article for Sunday, 27 April 2025, is Si vis pacem, para bellum.Si vis pacem, para bellum (Classical Latin: [siː wiːs ˈpaːkɛ̃ ˈparaː ˈbɛllʊ̃]) is a Latin adage translated as "If you want peace, prepare for war." The phrase is adapted from a statement found in Roman author Publius Flavius Vegetius Renatus's tract Dē Rē Mīlitārī (fourth or fifth century AD), in which the actual phrasing is Igitur quī dēsīderat pācem, præparet bellum ("Therefore let him who desires peace prepare for war"). The idea which it conveys also appears in earlier works such as Plato's Nomoi (Laws). The phrase presents the insight that the conditions of peace are often preserved by a readiness to make war to defend said peace when the need arises. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:12 UTC on Sunday, 27 April 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Si vis pacem, para bellum on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Nicole.

Send us a textWith recent warnings from the Askari Media Group (link below) and a written threat assessment from General Flynn that outlines 5 possible scenarios the communists/deep state may employ in order to stop Trump from being inaugurated on January 20, 2025, it's easy to conclude that things are about to get violent in this country. Face it, Trump's victory on November 5th was only one battle in this war to defend our nation against a communist takeover, and it won't be our last. Here we are, almost on the eve of the election. Please vote, please encourage your friends to vote. Si vis pacem, para bellum is latin for "If you want peace, prepare for war". It's a Roman-era aphorism that conveys the idea that peace is often preserved by being ready to make war to defend it. The phrase is based on a statement in the fourth or fifth century AD by Roman author Publius Flavius Vegetius Renatus. How is this applicable to a Christian? And should a Christian even engage in actual war/bloodshed? This podcast episode explains that. The subject of Just War, or Justum Bellum, is a frequent topic in these podcasts. If, however, the only acceptable justification for any war is to establish a more just and lasting peace, shouldn't there be a similar framework for Just Peace, or Justum Pacem? Just War theory goes back to Plato and Aristotle, but Just Peace thinking is a product of the last century. Despite a lack of concrete formulation, past examples of successful post-conflict transitions included efforts to establish a just peace. Sadly, there are more examples of unjust peace, which -- as Immanuel Kant noted -- plants the seeds of future war. Music: Liszt, Les Preludes, perfomed by the USMC Band.
