POPULARITY
We take time away from history this week to discuss an important current issue and how it relates to taxpayers.---Billy Corben whose production credits include Cocaine Cowboys, Dawg Fight, The U, and The U Part 2 needs no introduction to most of you. For those who don't know, he's a relentless advocate for government efficiency in southeast Florida and regularly discusses these topics on the Dan LeBetard Show. Today he joins us to discuss the soccer stadium hustle in southeast Florida and why Inter Miami CF was given land in BOTH Miami and Fort Lauderdale, why they did not build on land they already owned in Miami as well as discussing the current hustle where tens of millions in taxpayer money is going to support FIFA's World Cup efforts in Miami- as well as the relocation of some of FIFA's most important jobs from Switzerland to south Florida.Even at a time of great political polarization in Florida and the USA, the one clear thing that seems to unite Democrats and Republicans is their desire to scam taxpayers to profit off of sports venues while enabling oligarch owners of sports entities. This is a MUST-LISTEN to anyone concerned about taxpayer funds being wasted on vanity projects and real estate scams.

In To Tell a Black Story of Miami (UP of Florida, 2022), Tatiana McInnis examines literary and cultural representations of Miami alongside the city's material realities to challenge the image of South Florida as a diverse cosmopolitan paradise. McInnis discusses how this favorable "melting pot" narrative depends on the obfuscation of racialized violence against people of African descent. Analyzing novels, short stories, and memoirs by Edwidge Danticat, M.J. Fievre, Carlos Moore, Carlos Eire, Patricia Stephens Due, and Tananarive Due, as well as films such as Dawg Fight and Moonlight, McInnis demonstrates how these creations push back against erasure by representing the experiences of Black Americans and immigrants from Caribbean nations. McInnis considers portrayals of state-sanctioned oppression, residential segregation, violent detention of emigres, and increasing wealth gaps and concludes that celebrations of Miami's diversity disguise the pervasive, adaptive nature of white supremacy and anti-Blackness. To Tell a Black Story of Miami offers a model of how to use literature as a primary archive in urban studies. It draws attention to the similarities and divergences between Miami's Black diasporic communities, a historically underrepresented demographic in popular and scholarly awareness of the city. Increasing understanding of Miami's political, social, and economic inequities, this book brings greater nuance to traditional narratives of exceptionalism in cities and regions. Alfred Spellman is a born storyteller. He grew up in Miami Beach and, along with his friend Billy Corben, he’s been making films since he was 15 years old. In 2000 they created their production company Rakontur and their first documentary, Raw Deal: A Question of Consent, premiered at the Sundance Festival in 2001. Since then, they’ve produced 537 Votes, Screwball, Magic City Hustle, Dawg Fight, Cocaine Cowboys, and ESPN’s 30 for 30: Broke, The U, and The U: Part 2. Rakontur’s films have tackled a diverse range of topics from sexual assault to college football to the Biogenesis doping scandal. Alfred’s not afraid to explore the sordid underbelly of society, and as a Miami native, he derives much of his inspiration from the real-life stories of crime, corruption, and hypocrisy that are rife in his hometown.
Documentarian Billy Corben (Cocaine Cowboys, Screwball, The U, Dawg Fight)joins Mike Beltran via Zoom for a conversation about his films, his ongoing feud with Miami-Dade County State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle, duck madianoches, and Jimmy Johnson's hair. NOTE: We ran into a technical snag while recording this conversation, so there are a few minutes of audio missing near the end of the call. Don't worry. You're just missing a portion of Mike's rant about Miami Spice. Dhafir "Dada 5000" is a true pioneer. The heavyweight hailing from one of Miami's most notorious neighborhoods took an idea to entertain and eliminate street violence and turned it into a PPV worthy product. Literally starting from the back yard, Dada 5000 organized bare knuckle fights that first set South Florida on fire and then the world. From his Netflix documentary Dawg Fight, produced by the team behind Cocaine Cowboys, to his most recent Back Yard Brawl Extreme Fighting series, he has taken the sport of back yard brawling and bare knuckle fighting to new heights. He also hosted its first pay-per-view event in Cheyenne, Wyoming on April 5th. We sat with the fighter turned promoter at the Florida Boxing Hall of Fame weekend in Tampa to talk about it all!
