Kate sits down with Kelsey May Vandy, who grew up alongside the family of serial killer Israel Keyes. Kelsey first captured Kate's attention with a social post describing the moment she realized that a boy she once knew—a family friend—was, in fact, the notorious killer. While the episode touches on Keyes' background and disturbing criminal history, the conversation quickly shifts to Kelsey's own remarkable story. Raised completely off the grid, Kelsey didn't learn to read until high school, yet went on to attend college, build a career, marry, and begin a family—all while catching up to a world she had barely been exposed to as a child. Nearly 30 million workers, or roughly one in five workers throughout the country, are required to have a professional license before they can do their jobs. That's more than twice the number of workers who belong to unions. And it's almost ten times the number who earn the minimum wage. But in comparison to those other economic arrangements, curiously little attention is given to the process that governs licensing, the perverse outcomes it so often leads to, and the vulnerable workers who are affected by it. Cardiff's guest on this episode is Vanderbilt law professor Rebecca Haw Allensworth, author of “The Licensing Racket: How we decide who is allowed to work, and Why it goes wrong.” Among Cardiff's picks for the economics book of the year, it is the product of not just a scholarly understanding of the topic, but of years and years of painstaking reporting, interviewing hundreds of people, and unearthing a variety of frankly shocking anecdotes. She and Cardiff discuss: The legal and institutional design behind the boards that oversee licensing in each stateHow the desire to protect the already licensed leads board to impose outrageous requirements for new licensesThe ludicrous rationalizations of so many licensing boards for erecting obstacles to new workers entering their professions The shocking failure of licensing boards, especially within medicine, to actually fulfill the mission they are set up to pursue: protect public safetyHow the ratcheting up of licensing requirements led to a standoff between nurses and doctorsHow licensing hurts dynamism and entrepreneurshipThe more substantive tradeoffs involved in licensing, including the pride and validation that existing practitioners feel in having a licenseWhich jobs shouldn't require a license, and for those that do, a better way forward All throughout, Rebecca shares with Cardiff the tales of the workers, board members, and the others she interviewed.Related links: The Licensing Racket, by Rebecca Haw AllensworthRebecca Haw Allensworth page at Vanderbilt Law School Hosted on Acast. We open the show with some thoughts on the TNF matchup as the Lions kept playoff hopes alive with a win over Dallas. What do we make of the latest playoff picture? The Preds got a big 2-1 win in OT over Florida last night. The team has won 4 of the last 5 games, but is it too late to get things turned around? Apparently Vanderbilt football considered trying to play an extra game this weekend, but couldn't get things lined up. What do we make of the conference championship games this weekend, and we take some phones on the CFP committee.

Jacari and Jamari are back on The 2 Minute Drill with the regular season in the rearview and Championship Week on deck. They open the show recapping a wild slate: Georgia grinding out a defensive win over Georgia Tech behind a dominant run game, Oklahoma barely hanging on against struggling LSU to keep its playoff hopes alive, Alabama surviving the Iron Bowl with a gutsy fourth-down call, and Cal shocking SMU to blow up the AAC title race and open the door for Duke. Then they zoom out and dig into the chaos around the College Football Playoff picture and the coaching carousel. The guys debate Notre Dame's résumé, BYU's case, whether Vanderbilt is being disrespected, and what happens if two Group of Five teams crash the party—plus what it would mean for the ACC if Virginia or Miami can't get in. They also touch on big coaching moves across the SEC and beyond before closing the show with their conference championship predictions, including JMU–Troy, Tulane–North Texas, BYU–Texas Tech, Georgia–Alabama, Duke–Virginia, and the heavyweight showdown between Ohio State and Indiana, with a little Heisman talk sprinkled in.

Frank Lavin talks with Eli Merritt, Professor at Vanderbilt and the author of "Disunion Among Ourselves," to discuss the critical issues the Continental Congress faced at the dawn of the American republic, with the most important failure being the failure to eliminate slavery. Eli discusses how the sectional differences and the need to forge some type of political consensus drove the Founders to leave this issue unresolved. In addition to his book, Eli also suggests reading Jeffrey Rosen's book, "The Pursuit of Happiness," which explores how the Founders were inspired by classical discussions of virtue.

Southeastern 16's Graham Doty and Chris Lee speak with Vanderbilt baseball coach Tim Corbin about the Commodores' 2025 season and fall workouts that just ended. Topics include: How did Corbin process last season? The Commodores came out of nowhere to win the Southeastern Conference tournament and claim the No. 1 seed for the NCAA tournament thanks to a stellar resume. But the Commodores finished third in the Nashville Regional. How does Corbin process that in hindsight? The changing climate of college baseball and how Corbin has adjusted to the transfer portal. Did Tim Corbin really drive a golf cart through downtown Nashville rush-hour traffic? How will Vanderbilt use star pitcher Connor Fennell this season? Experienced pitching depth that includes Miller Green, Alex Kranzler, Brennan Seiber and others. The progress of Austin Nye, Matthew Shorey and other young arms. New arms Nate Taylor and Aiden Stillman should help. The addition of a number of transfers, including brothers Logan and Carter Johnstone from (Washington State and Cal State Fullerton, respectively, plus Tennessee Tech's Mack Whitcomb. Vanderbilt's lineup is unsettled for 2026, but the Commodores have no shortage of bodies. Where might Brodie Johnston settle? A surprising possible position designation for Braden Holcomb. Well what do you know? After all the hoopla about Texas, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and somehow, Vandy... it's Georgia playing Alabama again in Atlanta for the conference championship. The Dawgs are in the playoffs regardless of the result this Saturday. But Kirby will be the first to tell you, the SEC Championship is just as important to him as the Natty. If the Dawgs exorcise the crimson demons, we are looking at a top 4 seed and first round bye. Lose, and we better hope the committee thinks we deserve a top 8 spot, at least.
