In this episode, we are pleased to be joined by first time guest Phil McInnis, Chief Investment Strategist at Avantis Investors. Phil shares research on why investors should stay the course during periods of market volatility like what we recently witnessed following the trade tariff announcements on April 2 "Liberation Day." He reminds listeners the importance of maintaining a strategic mindset when investing in risky assets, such as equities, as the inherent risks are the reasons why stocks outperform bonds and cash over the long run. We also discuss their research into additional market risk premiums that have historically rewarded investors with higher returns such as value and cash flow profitability.

This episode dives into the life of a third-generation business leader who transformed a family legacy in construction into a multifaceted empire spanning heavy infrastructure, disaster recovery, and entertainment, all while staying rooted in his Christian beliefs. Born in Mobile, Alabama, John stepped into the family business—founded by his grandfather in 1970—after graduating from the University of Alabama in 2000. Under his leadership, McInnis Industries has completed over $1 billion in projects, including bridges, roads, and major disaster relief efforts like the Hurricane Katrina cleanup. But John's story goes beyond business success. In 2009, he took a bold step into the entertainment world, becoming the majority owner of the Flora-Bama, a legendary beach bar straddling the Alabama-Florida line. With his vision, the Flora-Bama has thrived, hosting massive events like Kenny Chesney's 2014 concert for 40,000 fans, cementing its status as a cultural landmark. What sets John apart is how his faith guides every decision. Raised with a strong moral compass by his father and grandfather, he sees his work as a calling to serve others. Whether rebuilding communities after natural disasters or fostering a sense of unity at the Flora-Bama, John believes in putting faith into action. His partnership with Kenny Chesney's Love for Love City Foundation after Hurricanes Irma and Maria showcased this commitment, as he spearheaded relief efforts in the Virgin Islands, blending his expertise in disaster management with a heart for helping those in need. In this podcast, John opens up about the challenges of balancing ambition with purpose, the lessons learned from high-stakes ventures, and how his belief in God has sustained him through it all. There can be no doubt the world changed on 20th of January 2025. As a matter of fact, a new US President was inaugurated — a second time for President Trump — whose return to power has spooked global friends and enemies alike since his election last November. The flurry of Executive Orders issued from day one says much about the determination of this US Administration to not only dismantle the work and legacy of the Biden Administration but potentially also many elements of the postwar multilateral order.Indeed, amongst the first measures taken by President Trump upon his return to the White House was the withdrawal of the US from both the Paris Climate Agreement, and the World Health Organisation (WHO). However, beyond the acts the bluster, the rhetoric on tariffs and bold promises to end both wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, the vast majority of actions and orders have concerned domestic matters, focused upon issues such as immigration and equality. This begs the question: is the Trump Administration more concerned with bombastic rhetoric than bombastic action when it comes to global and geostrategic affairs?Dr Kathleen McInnis is definitely someone who can speak to this and many other related issues. Director and senior fellow of the Smart Women, Smart Power Initiative at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), and a former official at the US Department of Defence (DOD), she joins Ilana Bet-El in a wide-ranging conversation. From women and "dudes" in defence and foreign affairs to modern strategic challenges, and the future of NATO and EU-US relations, this is a strong and surprising discussion concerning rhetoric, reality and continuity in America's foreign policy under President Trump 2.0.This episode was recorded on 23 January 2025.MentionsThe Heart of War: Misadventures in the PentagonSmart Women, Smart Power podcast and resourcesThe NCI Global Trends 2035 ReportFollow our guest:Kathleen McInnis X/Twitter & LinkedInHer bioYou can also follow usInstagram @women_leaders_podcastOur partner European Leadership Network social media Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and websiteIlana Bet-ElCreditsProduction: Florence FerrandoMusic: Let Good Times Roll, RA from #Uppbeat Hosted on Acast. For more than half a century, he owned and managed the Philadelphia A's — nearly their entire existence. Dr. Daris McInnis joins Jethro to explore the complex nature of the reading process and the pivotal role that parents play in building literacy foundations at home. Dr. McInnis emphasizes the expertise that parents bring to the table, urging schools to honor and tap into that knowledge. He challenges the assumptions that parents inherently have everything they need to support their child's learning or that lack of engagement signals disinterest. Instead, he advocates for creating meaningful partnerships with parents, giving them a seat at the table, and understanding the pressures they face, such as time constraints. Throughout the discussion, Dr. McInnis highlights the value of programs like Reading is Fundamental (RIF) and literacy nights, which provide families with tools and strategies to support their children's learning. He also encourages educators to rethink their roles as learners themselves, emphasizing the importance of linguistic expression and understanding students as cosmopolitan intellectuals. Tune in to discover how schools can better engage families in the literacy process and how transformative leadership begins with meaningful, student-centered conversations.Reading process is complex. Marissa is responsible for overseeing the continued evolution and implementation of Verizon's Sustainability Strategy as well as its enterprise wide relationships across its sustainability portfolio. She focuses on operationalizing Verizon's internal and external commitments while tracking its progress across the enterprise to ensure holistic management in the areas of sustainability and driving profitable growth. Prior to joining Verizon, Marissa was with the Department of Defense in Washington DC, leading Climate Policy and Interagency engagement. She served as the climate policy advisor to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Energy, Installations and Environment. She has held a number of progressive roles within the White House and Pentagon, including Director for Climate Adaptation and Resilience, Climate Program Director for the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of the Navy. From 2006-2014, Marissa served in various leadership roles at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, including the Office of the CFO and the Tribal Affairs Office. Marissa McInnis Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: How to institutionalize sustainability at a large global organization Verizon's approach to ESG reporting and highlights from the latest report Verizon's renewable energy goals Advice and recommendations for sustainability professionals Marissa's Final Five Questions Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? I always advise people who ask me to think outside your circle. A lot of sustainability and climate educated professionals tend to stay within that bubble or that circle. I encourage you to talk to your facilities lead. I encourage you to talk to your supply chain lead. Think about the areas within the organization where you may be already doing that sustainability work and you're not counting it, or you're not communicating it across or replicating it. Think outside your circle. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? When you think about sustainability and climate from the climate perspective, you have mitigation where you're reducing emissions and then you also have adaptation and resilience where you're really looking to climate-proof your business. The lifting up of that adaptation and resilience side, especially given my background, that's what I worked on predominantly over the last 17 years, it's that side of it. I really am excited about how people are paying attention to it and businesses are paying attention to it. Alongside that, thinking about the co-benefits. That's kind of a buzzword that's happening right now, but what also reduces emissions plus helps with that adaptation resilience problem. Then finally the biggest one is just thinking about sustainability from this cross-cutting lens like I was talking about. Talking to folks that you wouldn't normally talk to. Sometimes it's hard. At the Pentagon, for a long time I was one of the younger people there and there were a lot of grumpy older facilities folks that I had to talk to. But it ended up being such a valuable conversation. We ended up working together to update building codes according to new climate projections. So you never know where you're going to find that value. That's why you have to keep reaching out. What is one book you would recommend sustainability leaders read? I just finished Six Thinking Hats by Edward De Bono, and it's all about how you can think about a problem and think about framing it. It takes any type of negative association or emotion off of one individual person and allows for really brilliant group think. You think about the white hat, it's neutral and objective. So you could say to someone in your group during your brainstorm, “Hey, put on a white hat,” and it takes away the personal and brings it up to a group level so that folks can think about it from that front. Yellow Hat is sunny and positive. The one hat that I try to use that I don't normally put on first is the Black hat, which is careful and cautious, the devil's advocate hat. I've really used it a lot and encourage folks to read it. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? Anything by Tensie Whelan, read it, absorb it. And I'm a little bit biased here because I helped develop a lot of this material, but I also l use a lot of the US government federal climate resources. If you go to climate.gov and use the Climate Resilience Toolkit, a lot of the work that I've done over the past 15 years is there. Looking at the maps, seeing where you can, especially with a company with a global footprint, think about where your biggest risks are from climate related hazards, it's really easy to do using public verified peer reviewed data. Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the sustainability work being done at Verizon and check out the new ESG report? If you go to verizon.com there's a search box at the top. You can search sustainability and it goes into a resource page specifically for climate sustainability related goals. We also have our ESG report up there and you can see what we're doing from water conservation, renewable energy, our net zero goals, and also how to get involved within your community.

Rodney completed a BSc in Physics from the University of New Brunswick and subsequently worked as a research assistant for UNB in a CO2 laser lab before attending University of Toronto on an NSERC scholarship where he completed an MASc in electrical engineering. His graduate work was modeling and simulation of a semiconductor device-physics industrial problem, a solution he later presented at an international modeling and simulation conference in Pittsburg. He has spent over 35 years working in industry in telecom chip design, fiber-optics, computing, and LED lighting. He was involved in modeling and simulation activity for some of the projects he worked on including writing an Excel-based simulator 15 years ago to solve a complex electrical network problem. In 2022, Rodney took on a personal challenge to see if he could calculate the temperature rise for an increase in GHGs. His interest became an obsession which led to his development of a comprehensive tool he calls GHG Lab that implements his understanding of the GHG physics and a website called Climate Bell to share it with others. Now, anyone even without any physics understanding, can use his GHG Lab tool to compute Earth's temperature change from a change in GHG levels. The tool has produced interesting and good-news results that he wishes to share with threatened industries so they can defend their interests against unnecessary climate-change mandates. He has also setup an open peer review forum so scientists can publicly comment too. 00:00 Meet Rodney McInnis: A Journey from Physics to Climate Modeling 00:40 Introducing Climate Bell: A New Approach to Greenhouse Gas Modeling 01:31 The Science and Skepticism Behind Climate Bell 01:58 GHG Lab: A Revolutionary Tool for Climate Analysis 03:02 Shifting Perspectives on Climate Change Over 25 Years 03:25 The Making of GHG Lab: From Inspiration to Innovation 04:28 Demystifying the Greenhouse Gas Effect: A Deep Dive 06:04 Puzzle Pieces of Climate Modeling: Building a New Framework 36:13 GHG Lab in Action: Demonstrating Precision in Climate Modeling 41:28 Debunking Climate Change Myths with GHG Lab 42:00 Exploring the Impact of Methane and Nitrous Oxide 42:43 The Complexities of the Water Cycle and Climate Modeling 46:40 Live Demo of GHG Lab: A Deep Dive 51:00 Addressing Climate Change Industry Flaws 52:39 Revisiting Venus: A New Perspective on Greenhouse Effects 56:32 Engaging with the Community: Peer Review and Educational Tools 58:33 Debunking Popular Climate Change Alarms 01:00:50 GHG Lab: A Tool for Change and Education 01:03:16 Final Thoughts and Call to Action Slides for this podcast: https://tomn.substack.com/p/a-novel-engineering-approach-to-precision Climate Bell's learning center: https://www.climatebell.org/learn.html Download GHG Lab: https://www.climatebell.org/calculator.html Climate Bell's peer review forum: https://climatebell.createaforum.com/index.php X: https://twitter.com/ClimateBell ========= AI summaries of all of my podcasts: https://tomn.substack.com/p/podcast-summaries About Tom Nelson: https://linktr.ee/tomanelson1 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL89cj_OtPeenLkWMmdwcT8Dt0DGMb8RGR X: https://twitter.com/TomANelson Substack: https://tomn.substack.com/ About Tom: https://tomn.substack.com/about

People with bipolar disorder are four to six times more likely to die prematurely compared to those without a psychiatric disorder. (In comparison, smokers are two to three times more likely to have a shortened lifespan.) There are several contributing factors, including things like metabolic dysfunction, as well consequences of lifestyle choices influenced by disease burden Science needs to urgently investigate these extremely poor outcomes in search of more effective interventions that will enhance quality of life for people with bipolar disorder. Emerging evidence and clinical experience indicate that ketogenic and metabolic therapies may have a central role in addressing this concerning trend. Dr. Bret Scher interviews Dr. Melvin McInnis, Professor of Bipolar Disorder and Depression at University of Michigan, on these pressing topics. Dr. McInnis is working on a pilot trial that will look at a “ketogenic mimicking diet,” augmenting a low carb diet with exogenous ketones in bipolar disorder. Could this address unwanted metabolic dysfunction in this population? We applaud Dr. McInnins and his team for asking the question. Concerns have arisen among geopolitical analysts over the escalating animosity between Israel and Iran. They have voiced the consensus that an open conflict between the two nations would not serve the interests of any country in the Middle East, warning that such hostilities would culminate in a full-fledged showdown. In this scenario, regional powers would likely remain as bystanders. Noted strategist and Institute for the Study of War senior fellow, Matt McInnis, emphasized that Arab nations would prefer to stay neutral. McInnis elucidated that nations within the region may find themselves inadvertently entangled in this potential conflict - a prospect causing anxiety in Iran. The tension has escalated following Iran's repeated threats of retaliation against Israel subsequent to an Israeli strike on an Iranian consulate in Damascus. This assault resulted in the unfortunate loss of seven members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), including two of its generals. The immediate threat from Iran has caused a shift in U.S. CENTCOM Gen. Michael Kurilla's schedule, moving him to expedite his meeting with Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant. This urgent meeting's focus was to evaluate the military readiness of Israel, confirmed Pentagon Press Secretary and Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder during a Thursday press briefing. Jonathan Conricus, previously outspoke spokesman for the IDF and currently a Senior Fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD), downplayed the media's portrayal of tension around Iran's impending response to Israel. During the FDD's Morning Brief podcast, he even termed the escalating fear in Israel as a 'minor panic'. So as to assuage these fears, he assured listeners of the strategic thinking governing Iran's response to the crisis. Conricus praised Iran's tactical approach in these matters. He described Iranians as disciplined strategists who are well-versed in avoiding hasty actions based on emotional responses. He highlighted that despite the belligerent rhetoric currently prevalent, Iranians are known for their long-term vision and strategy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Organic REV The first thing to understand about REV is that it is not an ordinary humic acid product that is chemically-extracted from leonardite, lignite, or other coals. Rather, it is a 100% naturally-occurring carbon, humic acid & fulvic acid source - along with exceptionally high levels of naturally-occurring microbial biomass that can increase nitrogen efficiency by up to 25%. REV replaces depleted soil carbon & bacterial biomass - and absorbs nutrients to make them more readily available to plants via their root systems. Allison Gaillard and Karla McInnis discuss her running journey. Karla initially had reservations about running, especially during her time in high school and college when she was involved with military training programs. However, she eventually gained the confidence to start running again, setting small goals for herself. She talks about her experience with the B12K race and the Memorial 5k, highlighting the emotional moments and camaraderie with fellow runners and veterans. Karla's running journey has taught her the importance of setting achievable goals and persevering, no matter where you start. She recalls a challenging race experience at the "Doing it in the Bush" race but emphasizes that it doesn't deter her from participating again. She acknowledges that races can be tough at times but encourages a positive mindset. When asked for advice for someone starting running, Karla suggests starting small and gradually increasing the intensity or duration of workouts. She emphasizes the importance of taking it one step at a time and making progress at your own pace. She advises people to give themselves grace and set goals, encouraging them to pursue whatever they desire.Karla talks about her involvement with American Cancer Society and promotes the Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk on October 28th, inviting others to participate and enjoy the activities. The conversation closes with Karla expressing her support for the podcast and Allison thanking her for her encouragement and friendship.Karla McInnisRaces MentionedTurkey TrotDo It In The BushBattleship 12kMemorial 5kStrides Against Breast Cancer WalkShout OutsBrent GrubeKaty GrubeKelly Lomax Sarah Nell LemanKeith BattleChrissy SchneiderFresh Junkie RacingAmerican Cancer SocietySupport the showFor more details on Run Your Story happenings, including signing up for our upcoming training program, visit https://runyourstory.com/For web development, coding tutoring, or tech services, visit https://gaillardts.com/Go Run Your Story and take a piece of this story with you!
