Jace chats with writer Ryan Parrot about the incredible AfterShock series Dead Day. It starts with such a simple question, what would you do if your loves ones got to come back from the dead for one night? From that simple question comes a world and story with limitless possibilities, from the ideas of righting wrongs to taking revenge to having a chance to say goodbye. It is such a huge idea because not only are there consequences for the dead, there are so many implications for the living. It could fundamentally change the moral contract of society. You know how much we love comics that make you think and Ryan has does that here in spades. All this and we haven't even mentioned the story that we are given in the context of this world, that highlights chances for revenge, what obligations the living might feel for those who've passed, the idea of coming back to see your legacy and finding a way to truly rest in peace.
Jace takes a look at Dead Day #1 from Ryan Parrott & Evgeny Bornyakov. On special days, known as Dead Day the dead rise and once more and walk among the living. It doesn't happen every year, but it is predictable and it brings many fascinating opportunities. Some loved ones are reunited with family, other dead, especially prisoners who have been executed are violent. A religion known as the Revivalist has sprung up around the concept of Dead Day and even with the proof of the revivals out there for all to see they are looked upon as a cult. This particular story is all about how Dead Day affects one family, especially the mother who has done out on Dead Day to meet a former love, she has gone out to keep a promise made in a previous life, but will the price she pays to keep this promise be hire than she wants to pay?
In the week after Thanksgiving, Dylan and Bea watched nineteen (NINETEEN) horror movies, and now Dylan is here to talk about them. What happens next is a discussion of horror movies, sure, but also: what ghost would win in a ghost fight, haunted house hunters, Wes Anderson, Dark Goop Energy, whether or not all movies from the 80s are objectively bad, Will Ferrell mom opinions, and (natch) how pinball this whole mess is. Dylan's nineteen horror movies: Dark Water (2002) Shutter (2004) Ringu The Tag-Along The Two Sisters Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum Sadako vs. Kayako The Descent 28 Days Later Scrooged Terrified Ugetsu The Host The Dead Don't Die Night of the Living Dead Dawn of the Dead Day of the Dead Land of the Dead Under the Shadow The four Christmas movies Dylan actually likes: The Nightmare Before Christmas Elf Eyes Wide Shut Tokyo Godfathers Other movies referenced: The Hobbit Lake Placid In Bruges Teen Wolf Rushmore The Fantastic Mr. Fox Isle of Dogs Kill Bill Babes in Toyland

Many say that alongside Meshuggah, SikTH are one of the forebearers of djent music. A brief listen to this album will suggest that this may be somewhat true, but the influence is probably more apparent on their second album Death of a Dead Day, than this, their debut. The Trees Are Dead & Dried Out, Wait for Something Wilde by SikTH is not a djent album. The elements of the sound are there for sure, but this record incorporates a lot of nu-metal, emo, math and prog. Amongst a lot of other weirdness. It’s a strange record. These guys were clearly thinking outside of the box though. There’s a level of playing here that far surpasses many of the things their contemporaries were doing at the time. Has it aged well? We couldn’t decide, but you have the power to decide if this makes it into our discography. Fans of djent will no doubt be completely aware of this band’s importance. Those less familiar though? It’ll be interesting to see how y’all react.

medialounge at six | Talk & Performance [04.07.2019] This talk is part of »Dead Day Dog«, a transdisciplinary research project around the notion of trauma and the knot as a metaphor for trauma. Beyond the desire to untie, the research concentrates on the aesthetics and the ethics of the knot and navigates through the entanglement of movement, poetry and debate created by performing, visual and multimedia artists working on trauma, »knotting« different perspectives together. The research focuses on the aesthetics and ethics of knots. It navigates through the interweaving of movement, poetry and debate created by performing artists. The artistic work consists of »knotting together« the different perspectives. Whether through historical or eventful trauma, a certain presence of trauma cannot be denied in our interconnected world. How does trauma influence us on a collective level? The polyvagal theory, introduced by Dr. Stephen Porges, describes how complex inner neural circuits enable us to recognize whether the outside world is safe, dangerous or life threatening (neuroception). Upcoming technologies and devices such as Bio Mapping ®, brain hacking gadgets and location intelligence make it increasingly possible to measure neuroception, collect and visualize data and, potentially, act upon the feeling of safety within public spaces. How do we reconnect and disconnect with one and another when we become aware of each others bodily states? What about the ethics and politics of such measuring tools within smart cities, where trauma is a present past? Let’s cut through the bullshit. We were skeptical of people who call themselves motivational speakers. A lot of people who become motivational speakers were in another industry that involved presentation or performing and found they weren’t making enough money or gaining enough traction so they switched to “motivational speaking.” So for this month’s Dead Day […]

Lee and Daniel are back again for what became a loaded two hours plus episode. Keeping on with their look into film noir, neo-noir and crime films in general, they check out two closely-connected thrillers, "The Lodger" (1944) and "Hangover Square" (1945). The conversation bleeds out into discussions of the other versions of "The Lodger", Jack the Ripper in fiction, and how films in the film noir genre from different decades have influenced future productions both in and outside the genre. They also talk about the remarkable Laird Cregar and Linda Darnell, and the sad, tragic ends to their short careers. Also covered: listener comments, shout-outs from other podcasters and what they've watched as of late.
