Directed by Lorcan Finnegan ("Vivarium," "Nocebo"), "The Surfer" is a sun-bleached fever dream about masculinity, ego, and unraveling identity that veers from the poetic to the primal. In the latest episode of The Discourse, Cage and Finnegan join the show to talk about the emotional depths of their surreal new film, which hits theaters on May 2nd.

Send us a textWayne Turmel, a fellow Canadian and podcast host, an author, and consultant for the Kevin Eikenberry Group, joins Trench Leadership to share hard-earned wisdom about creating high-performing teams across distances in our transformed work landscape. As a remote work pioneer, Wayne offers a refreshingly pragmatic perspective that cuts through the noise surrounding return-to-office debates. The conversation explores Wayne's 3-O Model of Leadership, which balances Outcomes, Others, and Ourselves. This framework helps leaders navigate the complexities of managing remote teams while avoiding burnout. For leaders navigating hybrid work arrangements, Wayne's advice is refreshingly straightforward: focus on the work that needs doing rather than where it happens. By approaching team design with intentionality and listening to employee needs, leaders can create more effective, engaged teams regardless of physical location. The key is pausing to think strategically rather than rushing back to familiar patterns.Wayne's Links:1. www.KevinEikenberry.com2. www.longdistanceteambook.com3. https://www.linkedin.com/in/wayneturmel/4. wayne@kevineikenberry.com5. "Paddington 2 is incredible."
TIME FOR FIRST IMPRESSIONS IN WINTER 2025! Judy and Linda watched "The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call" (중증외상센터), "The Trunk" (트렁크), "When the Phone Rings" (지금 거신 전화는), and "The Queen Who Crowns" (원경). We will start covering "Melo Movie" (멜로무비) starring Choi WooSik and Park BoYoung in March. Hope it's good! Digressions: 1:18 - Listener E-mails! 4:27 - Judy watched "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent", starring Nicholas Cage and Pedro Pascal. It was a delightful meta action comedy, and you should check it out! 5:52 - Linda watched Part 2 of "Alienoid" (외계+인), and found a massive plot hole. 7:54 - Judy finished playing "Baldur's Gate 3" and is suffering from post-game depression once more. Time to catch up on the jillion games on her backlog! 9:51 - Linda watched the second season of "Night Agent" on Netflix, which is good to have on in the background. 11:59 - "When the Phone Rings" (지금 거신 전화는) is an MBC drama starring Yoo YeonSeok and Chae SooBin. Some things definitely work better as a webtoon. 31:04 - "The Queen Who Crowns" (원경) is a tvN drama starring Cha JooYoung and Lee HyunWook. The first episode is definitely scattered and hard to follow, but it shows much promise in terms of exploring the story of a very influential queen in Korean history. 42:19 - "The Trunk" (트렁크) is a Netflix drama starring Gong Yoo and Seo HyunJin. This one is weird, but we liked it? 49:55 - "The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call" (중증외상센터) is a Netflix drama, starring Ju JiHoon. Just don't take it too seriously. Audio clips: Mark Isham - "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent" - "Score Suite" 이병훈 (Lee ByungHoon) - "외계+인" (Alienoid) - "외계인" (Alien 1) Borislav Slavov - "Baldur's Gate 3" - "Main Theme Part I" Robert Duncan - "Night Agent" - "End Credits" Please send any questions, comments or suggestions on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (@kdramamyeyesout) or e-mail us (kdramamyeyesout(at)gmail.com). Send us a textOn the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are wishing we were Nicolas Cage and best friends with Pedro Pascal. We watched the 2022 film from Tom Gormican, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.I'm putting it out there right now: Nic Cage is one of our finest actors. Not only is he a freaking Oscar winner, but he also does weird meta movies like this one. Doesn't he seem like the craziest hang imaginable? There may have been some tough years in his past. Who among us doesn't occasionally have some money troubles and have to accept work we'd rather not do? But should we get on his case for stuff like Bangkok Dangerous and Drive Angry? For every one of those films, there's a Moonstruck, a Leaving Las Vegas, a The Rock. He's the best, and he shows us why in this delightful film.(Recorded on September 18, 2024)Links to Stuff We Mentioned:The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent - The Movie Database (TMDB)The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent trailer - YouTubeTom Gormican — The Movie Database (TMDB)Nicolas Cage — The Movie Database (TMDB)Pedro Pascal — The Movie Database (TMDB)Nicolas Cage: Real estate and tax problems - WikipediaThe Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Paddington (2014) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Paddington 2 (2017) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Guarding Tess (1994) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Vampire's Kiss (1988) — The Movie Database (TMDB)American Psycho (2000) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Batmobiles down the ages - Pocket-lintFollow Us:Give us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts!Sean's Letterboxd profile!Steven's Letterboxd profile! Our Buzzsprout site! Our Instagram profile!Support the show

This week we put The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent on trial. Is it pulling its weight, or is it too much weight to bear? Dave says that it's an enjoyable comic piece with two great central performances, whereas Alex argues that it has a lot of potential which it never delivers on. All of this plus a quiz about heavy items and an impression of the man himself. Let us know what you think of the episode, and don't forget to leave us a 5* rating. www.filmsontrial.co.uk/263

Jackie Chan has long since passed the precipice of a worldwide icon, and the obligatory movie in which famous actors play themselves was bound to come along eventually. But where films like Being John Malkovich (1999) and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022) used this meta-plot narrative to tell reflective and, in the case of the former, groundbreaking additions to the medium, the movie where Jackie Chan adopts a poorly CGI-ed panda is far from either of these things.

We explore how Cage's unique style and prolific output have led to some lesser-known but equally captivating films. Expect plenty of laughs as we share our thoughts on these films and their unexpected twists. Plus, we reminisce about Cage's career and his ability to oscillate between serious acting and downright absurdity, proving that he truly is a treasure trove of cinematic surprises.Exploring the wild and wonderful world of Nicolas Cage, this episode of Geek Girl Soup shines a light on two of his latest films: 'Dream Scenario' and 'The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.' As the hosts navigate through the quirks and eccentricities of Cage's career, they provide an engaging commentary that balances humor with thoughtful analysis. 'Dream Scenario' stands out as a fresh narrative that allows Cage to explore the complexities of fame when his character starts appearing in the dreams of strangers. The hosts share their thoughts on Cage's performance, emphasizing his ability to portray vulnerability while maintaining the quirky charm that fans adore. The conversation then shifts to 'The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,' where Cage portrays a fictionalized version of himself, tasked with navigating a chaotic situation involving a superfan and the CIA. The hosts dive into the film's meta aspects, discussing how it cleverly blurs the lines between reality and fiction, allowing Cage to poke fun at his own cinematic legacy. This film serves as a commentary on Cage's career, addressing the pressures of living up to iconic roles while also celebrating his unique contributions to the film industry. Through witty exchanges and reflections, the hosts create a lively atmosphere that not only entertains but also encourages listeners to appreciate the deeper themes present in Cage's work.Beyond the films themselves, the episode touches on broader themes such as the significance of recognizing hidden gems in cinema and the importance of revisiting films that may have flown under the radar. The hosts connect Cage's work to the evolving landscape of the film industry, reflecting on the losses of beloved actors and the impact of these changes on audiences. We're back with a film about filmmaking, spycraft and celebrity, starring the one and only Nicolas Cage. In the movie, Cage plays a fictionalized version of himself, down on his luck and struggling to connect with his teenage daughter, when a wealthy fan (who may or may not be a kidnapper and arms dealer) makes Cage an offer he can't refuse. Co-starring Pedro Pascal, this two-hander is equal parts bromance, action-comedy, and homage to Cage's lengthy career. And while director Tom Gormican's debut flopped at the box office despite positive reviews, it has become a meme-fueled cult hit in the two years since its release. The Brothers Wilson return to the summer as the Year of Redux settles its sights upon everyone's favorite Coppola: Nicolas Cage. This episode takes in his early turn as Cher's love interest in the Oscar-winning 80s comedy Moonstruck, his wacky-haired heroism in the nonsense Bruckheimer plane-heist / crime movie Con Air, and his self-deprecating turn playing himself in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Along the way, find out which movie yields the most Bond comparisons, and which movie would gain the most tepid poster quote from Pandy were he a contemporary mainstream film critic.

"This is why I must trust my shamanic instincts as a thespian." Join us for the most Nic Cage experience of all time! "Nicolas Cage stars as... Nick Cage in the action-comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Creatively unfulfilled and facing financial ruin, the fictionalized version of Cage must accept a $1 million offer to attend the birthday of a dangerous superfan (Pedro Pascal). Things take a wildly unexpected turn when Cage is recruited by a CIA operative (Tiffany Haddish) and forced to live up to his own legend, channeling his most iconic and beloved on-screen characters in order to save himself and his loved ones. With a career built for this very moment, the seminal award-winning actor must take on the role of a lifetime: Nick Cage." (Synopsis from Rotten Tomatoes)

We watched the Immeasurable Weight of Giant Abilities, oh no that's wrong, we watched "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent", directed by Tom Gormican. The most memed film of 2022 that starred both Pedro Pascal and Nicolas Cage. As we discuss this film we find out if it still holds up and if we'd like to see more of this bromance between our two hilarious leads. This Q&A conversation is based on the sermon titled "Unbearable Weight" given on Sunday February 25th, 2024 based on Joshua 7.
Joshua 7:1,6,10-12, 15, 19-21, 24-26But the people of Israel broke faith in regard to the devoted things, for Achan the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things. And the anger of the Lord burned against the people of Israel. Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the Lord until the evening, he and the elders of Israel. And they put dust on their heads. The Lord said to Joshua, “Get up! Why have you fallen on your face? Israel has sinned; they have transgressed my covenant that I commanded them; they have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen and lied and put them among their own belongings. Therefore the people of Israel cannot stand before their enemies. They turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become devoted for destruction. I will be with you no more, unless you destroy the devoted things from among you. And he who is taken with the devoted things shall be burned with fire, he and all that he has, because he has transgressed the covenant of the Lord, and because he has done an outrageous thing in Israel.'” Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, give glory to the Lord God of Israel and give praise to him. And tell me now what you have done; do not hide it from me.” And Achan answered Joshua, “Truly I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and this is what I did: when I saw among the spoil a beautiful cloak from Shinar, and 200 shekels of silver, and a bar of gold weighing 50 shekels, then I coveted them and took them. And see, they are hidden in the earth inside my tent, with the silver underneath.” And Joshua and all Israel with him took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver and the cloak and the bar of gold, and his sons and daughters and his oxen and donkeys and sheep and his tent and all that he had. And they brought them up to the Valley of Achor. And Joshua said, “Why did you bring trouble on us? The Lord brings trouble on you today.” And all Israel stoned him with stones. They burned them with fire and stoned them with stones. And they raised over him a great heap of stones that remains to this day. Then the Lord turned from his burning anger. Therefore, to this day the name of that place is called the Valley of Achor.Sermon Questions1. What carries the most weight in your heart?1b. What have you given to get that thing?3. When have you seen your pursuit of something bring trouble to your life?4. What leads you away from God most often?5. Have you ever experienced God bring hope from trouble (new life from destruction)?6. Pray that the Spirit would convict you of sin, and lead you to repent and confess to someone who can walk with you through any trouble it brings.
