Ryan Ritter joins Seth to discuss Danny Boyle's surprisingly touching new film, 28 Years Later. They discuss the wonder of Jodie Comer, how the film depicts the effects of nostalgia on us, the camera work as a representation of memory creation and of course the wild ending. Also: Seth pulls his own rug out from under himself and Ryan stands up for one of Boyle's least popular films. Check it out! Danny Boyle and Alex Garland's 28 Days Later is a film that holds up a lot better than a lot of its contemporaries. Following a disappointing middle entry, Boyle is back in the director's chair with the epic 28 Years Later. We discuss the distinctive trilogy's emotionally-charged place in the horror canon and the quirks of its writer and director's visions. Also include discussions of Saw X (2023), Locked (2025), M3GAN 2.0 (2025), The Excavation of Hob's Barrow (video game, 2022) and more.Follow us on Instagram and Facebook.Contact us at crystal@spookybitchgang.com and scott@spookybitchgang.com.
The gang abandons their wife this week as they review the non-Boyle follow up to small Brit zombie hit... this week it's 28 Weeks Later (2007). With a whole new cast, new director, and a new writer this follow yup to 28 Days Later was noted as a sort of cash grab by Alex Garland and Danny Boyle alike. And while it doesn't have the same secret sauce that the original did, there is still plenty to love about this Post Apocalyptic Dystopian movie that is kicking off our new topic for the month of July. Then, we contemplate the film's episodic structure, producing tonally distinct chapters that feel indebted both to Homeric and Alighierian epics as well as fantasy storytelling. Finally, we engage with the film's perspectives on death and mass crisis in the 21st century, how it speaks to our moment post-COVID and amidst Israel's ongoing genocide, and asks us to honor and value life in ways unfamiliar and reverent.Watch the trailer for 28 Years LaterListen to Taylor Holmes' reading of Rudyard Kipling's "Boots"Listen to Young Fathers' soundtrack for 28 Years Later....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish.

The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2025/06/binary-system-podcast-463-station-eleven-the-phoenician-scheme-and-28-weeks-later/We've clearly been kidnapped by aliens and replaced with clones who are much better at watching movies, because this week we caught up on a show that's only four years old, and watched a movie that's still in the theater. (Then of course we watched a movie 18 years after it came out, so maybe this is the real Binary System Crew after all. OR IS IT? No, it totally is.)First up we go over an absolutely grim episode of Station Eleven, going back in time to see how Miranda's relationship went up in flames (literally), then jumping forward to see how the whole world went up in flames. (Figuratively. Mostly.)After that we do a quick look at Wes Anderson's The Phoenician Scheme, which we absolutely love but it's hard to describe other than saying "It's very Wes Andersony." (The man loves him some horizontal tracking shots oh yes he does.)Finally we rolled our eyes a little at 2007's 28 Weeks Later: it's got some cool explosions, some intense action, and young Jeremy Renner is very cute, but it lost the charm of the original, unfortunately. (They needed to STICK TO THE RULES. - Kathryn) (Don't LOGIC THE PLOT, KATHRYN. - Elizabeth)This week's outro is a clip from Back In Line by Roy Colwin.Looking for a present for that hard-to-shop-for person? This week on DtW, the zombies are fast again! Dan and Raul watched 28 Weeks Later in anticipation for the soon to be released third entry. 28 Days introduced the world to an eerily empty London, a talented young Peaky Blinder and the concept of the running dead, so the sequel had big shoes to fill. Fielding a new director, 28 Weeks Later starts with an incredibly tense and gut wrenching opener that is able to build upon the stylistic triumphs of the original, only to then unfurl an entirely original take on post zombie society. Do you need to listen to this episode to get ready for the fantastic looking 28 Years Later? Probably, yes!

Film journalist and friend of the show Brandon Streussnig returns to discuss Danny Boyle's debut film Shallow Grave, a British riff on the 90s neo-noir template, self-described by Boyle and his collaborators as their take on the Coen's Blood Simple. The film chronicles a trifecta of beautiful, sociopathic yuppies sharing an Edinburgh flat (Kerry Fox, Christopher Eccleston, and Ewan McGregor) who unravel after the untimely death of their new roommate and the discovery of a suitcase full of cash. Frenetic, aesthetically bold, and brimming with terrific performances from its cast of newcomers, Shallow Grave stood in stark opposition to the more muted social realism of established British filmmakers of the era like Mike Leigh and Ken Loach and showcased the collaborative power of Boyle, McGregor, screenwriter John Hodge, and producer Andrew Macdonald only a handful of years removed from their landmark feature, Trainspotting. We discuss Boyle's aesthetic inclinations, his history in the theater, and how the cinematic medium can liberate a particular type of artist from the confines of the stage. Then, we unpack the film's stellar trio of performances, its economy of character, and especially McGregor's star-making turn that suggests the greatness he would achieve with Boyle in their next several collaborations. Finally, we explore the film's ire for post-Thatcherite individualism, its attacks on the moral vacuum of the upwardly mobile, the dramatic irony of a film about the corruptability of money even for those who don't need it.In addition, we spend a brief moment looking forward to Boyle's latest film 28 Years Later (a full Bonus episode on the film coming later this week) and what it supposes for Boyle's late period.Follow Brandon Streussnig on Twitter. After 18 long years Danny Boyle, Alex Garland, and Cillian Murphy are taking us back to the UK and the plight of the infected with 28 Years Later. Reaction thus far has been divided, but what do you think? | 28 Years Later | It's been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped from a biological weapons laboratory. Still living in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amid the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily defended causeway. When one of them decides to venture into the dark heart of the mainland, he soon discovers a mutation that has spread to not only the infected, but other survivors as well.
After 18 long years Danny Boyle, Alex Garland, and Cillian Murphy are taking us back to the UK and the plight of the infected with 28 Years Later. But before we can catch up with the infected after a few decades, let's go back to where it all began with the original! | 28 Days Later | A group of misguided animal rights activists free a caged chimp infected with the "Rage" virus from a medical research lab. When London bike courier Jim (Cillian Murphy) wakes up from a coma a month after, he finds his city all but deserted. On the run from the zombie-like victims of the Rage, Jim stumbles upon a group of survivors, including Selena (Naomie Harris) and cab driver Frank (Brendan Gleeson), and joins them on a perilous journey to what he hopes will be safety.
We've got more zombies than you can shake a stick at this week on Breakfast All Day. First off, we review "28 Years Later," the long-awaited reunion of Danny Boyle and Alex Garland in a Britain plagued by rage virus. This is a non-spoiler review, but we're doing a live spoiler chat at our YouTube channel on Wednesday, June 25 at Noon Pacific, so check back with us then and share your thoughts. In theaters now. Then we catch up with the two films that preceded it: "28 Days Later" (2002) and "28 Weeks Later" (2007). We realized in retrospect that you don't need to have seen either of these movies to get into the new one, but we were glad to have the conversations. If you're looking for something a little more lighthearted for the whole family, there's "Elio," the latest animated adventure from Disney Pixar. It's a sweet, gentle film for these stressful times about a misfit kid who dreams of having aliens abduct him. This is minor Pixar, but it's beautiful. In theaters. Finally, we wrap up with a lengthy Movie News LIVE! Among the topics we discuss are the "Jaws" 50th anniversary, the "Brokeback Mountain" 20th anniversary, the trailer for the new Bruce Springsteen biopic "Deliver Me From Nowhere," and Francis Ford Coppola taking "Megalopolis" on the road. This time on General Witchfinders, we're heading back into the blood-soaked, Rage-infected streets of post-apocalyptic Britain with 28 Weeks Later — the 2007 zombie horror sequel to Danny Boyle's groundbreaking 28 Days Later. Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, 28 Weeks Later builds on the legacy of 28 Days Later (which we covered in episode 43), expanding the world of the Rage Virus and the aftermath of a collapsed society. While Danny Boyle didn't direct this time around — due to commitments on Sunshine — he stayed on as executive producer and even directed key sequences himself, including the ferocious opening scene. The original creators — Boyle, producer Andrew Macdonald, and screenwriter Alex Garland — initially considered a direct sequel called 29 Days Later, potentially continuing the story of Cillian Murphy and Naomie Harris's characters. Instead, they pivoted to a broader, bleaker vision: an infected London under military quarantine, a supposed victory against the virus, and the inevitable resurgence of horror. Set weeks after the events of the first film, 28 Weeks Later follows the failed attempt to repopulate a ‘safe zone' in London, guarded by the US Army. As expected in a British zombie film, things go catastrophically wrong. Filming took place in iconic London locations, including Canary Wharf and 3 Mills Studios. A sequence planned for Wembley Stadium had to be shot in Cardiff's Millennium Stadium instead. The film's viral marketing campaign — quite literally — included a huge biohazard warning projected onto the White Cliffs of Dover. The Rage Virus was back. Opening in 2007, 28 Weeks Later landed in over 2,000 US cinemas and took nearly $10 million on its opening weekend. It didn't match the cultural impact of 28 Days Later, but it cemented the franchise as a landmark of modern British horror — helping shape the next wave of post-apocalyptic zombie cinema.28 Weeks Later features a fresh cast, including Robert Carlyle, Rose Byrne, Jeremy Renner, Harold Perrineau, Idris Elba, and a young Imogen Poots. While none of the original characters return, the film builds on the terrifying groundwork Boyle and Garland laid in 28 Days Later — exploring themes of infection, trust, trauma, and institutional failure. The trilogy-that-never-was stalled with 28 Months Later, which entered development hell. But a proper sequel, 28 Years Later, has finally been greenlit, with Danny Boyle returning to direct and Cillian Murphy on board as producer. The Rage Virus isn't done with us yet. If you're searching for podcasts about 28 Weeks Later, 28 Days Later, 28 Years Later, Danny Boyle, zombie movies, the Rage Virus, post-apocalyptic horror, or modern British horror cinema — you've found the right episode.
