Every scuba diver must visit this location at some point in their life. My only regret is not going sooner. We noticed that it's just as mind-blowing to non-divers and kids as it is to certified divers. I also believe it inspires many to go and get involved in the world of scuba diving. In this interview, I speak with the executive director, Lisa Mongelia while at the DEMA Show. She not only gives us some foundational history, but some of the most interesting points and facts about the museum itself.  I also found the little hidden Playmobile divers to be wildly fun, in an Easter-eggy kinda way! The history of Diving Museum is a first-class operation with extremely fine attention to detail. This is every diver's bucket-list destination, and it's perfectly situated in the Florida Keys, on Islamorada.  From sound effects to things you can touch, we got the vibe of being transported somewhere else. I was shocked at the number of dive helmets and suits that exist out there and loved the timeline and facts along the floor as we walked from one exhibit to the next. They displayed everything from earliest Seibe Gorman dive helmets to the Mark V, as well as all regular scuba diving milestones and even the submersible Jim Suits (atmosphere dive suits). This was one of my all-time favorite maritime attractions, and I will be back! PS I think what really makes this one pop is tha fact that it's right in between SO much scuba diving (between Key Largo and Key West). It just fits. Amoray Dive Resort is the only dedicated dive resort in the Florida Keys.  In fact, Key Largo is considered the “Scuba Diving Capital of the World”. Jeff Gneiser (and his wife, Cynthia) own the PADI 5 Star Dive Operation that operates with the resort. Jeff sat down with me to tell the story of how they've renovated and expanded the facility, and what it takes to be a 2023 and 2024 award-winning dive operation. They took us to the reefs and the famous Spiegel Grove shipwreck, and we stayed a few nights at the resort. After seeing some of the local sites like The History of Diving Museum (and feeding the tarpon at Robbie's) we even had dinner with the two of them at what is now our new favorite waterside dive. Lisa is the Executive Director of the History of Diving Museum in Islamorada in the beautiful Florida Keys. She is an avid scuba diver and a great friend of the Lionfish Community. She has even helped us with our submarine project and was instrumental for helping us get our first dives up and running. About the museum - Over a span of forty years, Drs. Joe and Sally Bauer acquired one of the world's largest collections of diving helmets, hand-operated air pumps, armored suits, lights and other accessory gear, plus memorabilia, prints, photographs, books, film and video. Their passion took them to virtually every corner of the world and the Museum's collection now represents the contributions of more than 30 countries to diving history. As their research evolved and collections grew, the Bauers were inspired by the idea of using their collection—which had become one of the largest and most comprehensive in the world—as the basis for a museum to share their knowledge and passion for diving history with the public. Following the Bauers' retirement, they moved permanently from Cleveland, Ohio to the Florida Keys, the perfect location to establish what became The History of Diving Museum. https://www.divingmuseum.org/

Edward Ellsberg was not only known for his incredible salvage work prior to and during World War II, he was also a prolific author. Ellsberg graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1914, transferred to the Navy's Construction Corp in 1916 and became a leading expert in underwater salvage. He was in charge of the efforts to raise the wreck of the submarine S-51 from 132 feet. After leaving the Navy in 1926, Ellsberg started to write. His first book recounted the salvage efforts of S-51. The book was published in 1928 and is titled On The Bottom. Prior to World War II he continued his writing. His next three books were fiction about salvaging sunken treasure (30 Fathoms Deep), submarine warfare in World War I (Pig Boats) and S-54. He also wrote a trilogy of juvenile books on underwater adventure. Right before the war started he published Hell on Ice and Captain Paul. During World War II, Ellsberg led efforts to clear a Red Sea port of scuttled ships and dry docks. Then he led all salvage efforts in the Western Mediterranean. He also was largely responsible for setting up the artificial harbor during the D-Day invasion at Omaha Beach. He wrote another trilogy about his World War II work and includes, Under the Red Sea Sun, No Banners, No Bugles and The Far Shore.

In this episode we discuss wet suits, The Ocean Foundation, and the History of Diving Museum One of the questions we often get at the shop is what thickness of wet suit should I buy. Our answer is it depends. It depends on where, when and how you dive. A 3 mm wet suit gives you a lot of mobility and lessens the weight that you need to carry. A 3 mm wet suit might be the best option for water temperatures at 77 degrees of above. You might choose a 5 mm wet suit if water temperatures are below 77 degrees. If you aren't sure, the 5 mm wet suit might be the most versatile option. The Ocean Foundation is a unique community with a mission to support, strengthen and promote those organizations dedicated to reversing the trend of destruction of oceans environments around the world. They have spent $48 M over the last 13 years on marine conservation. They also sponsor a program called Seagrass Grow – a program for carbon offsets.
