The character of war is changing, but its human stakes are not. Speed, software, autonomy, and long-range systems now shape the battlefield, yet every decision still carries life-or-death consequences for Soldiers on the ground. LTG (Ret.) Neil Thurgood's background has prepared him to help guide thinking on the Army's adaptation without losing the values that define it. How can technology actually serve those who fight? In this episode of Army Matters, hosts LTG (Ret.) Leslie Smith and SMA (Ret.) Dan Dailey sit down with LTG (Ret.) Thurgood, whose career spans enlisted infantry service, combat aviation, senior acquisition leadership, and now defense industry innovation with the defense technology firm Anduril. From formative experiences as the child of an Army aviator, to his own experiences as an Infantrymen, Aviator, and senior leader standing up the Army's Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office (RCCTO), Thurgood reflects on leadership under pressure, learning through failure, and why speed in acquisition is ultimately about giving Soldiers a chance to come home. Guest: LTG Neil Thurgood, PhD, U.S. Army Retired, Senior Vice President, Anduril Has a member of the Army positively changed your life? Now is your chance to thank them publicly with a shoutout via our Hooah Hotline and have it possibly appear on an upcoming episode of AUSA's Army Matters podcast! Summary In this episode, Andy welcomes Coach Tony Weaver, author of Project Manage Your Life: Your Blueprint for Achieving Any Goal — One Step at a Time. After decades of leading complex IT, marketing, and transformation projects, Tony turned his project management skills inward and used them to lose over 100 pounds. That journey sparked a new mission: helping others apply the same proven methods to their own goals, whether it's health, finances, career, or just finally following through on something important. In this conversation, you'll hear how to turn vague intentions into measurable, motivating goals. Tony shares how to break down big ambitions into doable milestones, track your progress without becoming a slave to the data, and stay consistent with joy instead of burnout. He unpacks what SMART goals actually look like in the real world and explains why the project mindset can transform not just what you achieve, but how you feel while doing it. If you're looking for practical ideas to move forward on goals that matter to you, at work or at home, this episode is for you! Sound Bites “Project management absolutely changed my life.” “Life is agile.” “Every goal is a project. Project management is just applying structure to that goal.” “Your brain doesn't care about your happiness. It cares about keeping you safe. That's why it resists change.” “Once you build confidence in yourself, the goal you set becomes just a jumping-off point.” “Setting a goal is an act of hope. It says that tomorrow can be better than today.” “Track what you can control. Influence is important, but control drives change.” “Focus on the things you control. Keep an eye on the results, but don't obsess about them.” “The safest place to be is in your comfort zone, not trying.” “Some numbers matter. Some are interesting. Some aren't even interesting.” “Letting a goal die of loneliness? NASA's Artemis 3 Mission Faces High Risk of Delay: The Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel has raised concerns regarding the timeline for the Artemis 3 mission, warning that SpaceX's Starship may not be ready for the planned late 2026 lunar landing. Key issues include the need for successful flight tests and the unproven capability of propellant transfer in orbit, raising questions about contingency plans for the mission.Hayabusa2's Extended Mission to Asteroid 1998 KY26: Japan's Hayabusa2 spacecraft is embarking on an extended mission to study the small, rapidly rotating asteroid 1998 KY26. Unlike its previous mission, Hayabusa2 will observe this asteroid from a distance, providing valuable insights into different types of asteroids and the early solar system.Recovery of Rare Aubrite Meteorite: Scientists have successfully recovered the Bliskavica meteorite, a rare Aubrite type, following a fireball event over Europe. This meteorite is significant as it offers a known origin story, allowing researchers to trace its pre-impact orbit back to the asteroid belt, enhancing our understanding of planetary formation.Potential Gold Rush from Earth's Mini Moons: A new study suggests that temporarily captured objects (TCOs) orbiting Earth could contain billions in precious metals. Proposed missions to retrieve samples from these TCOs could be launched for as little as $10 million, making asteroid mining much more accessible and potentially revolutionizing the industry.SpaceX's Busy Launch Schedule: SpaceX continues its impressive launch cadence with the successful deployment of 22 Starlink satellites, marking its 65th orbital mission of the year. The Falcon 9 rocket's first stage booster completed its 17th landing, showcasing the company's advancements in reusable rocket technology.Growing Tea on the Moon: New research indicates that astronauts may be able to grow tea plants in lunar soil simulants. This breakthrough could provide a psychological boost for long-term space missions, allowing astronauts to enjoy comforting beverages while in space.Earth's Crystals Hold Galactic Secrets: A study reveals that ancient crystals in Earth's crust may contain traces of heavy elements produced by supernovae in the spiral arms of our galaxy. This discovery suggests that our solar system's journey through the Milky Way has left a geological record in the form of these crystals. For more cosmic updates, visit our website at astronomydaily.io. In early 2025, new mission presidents and their wives were called to serve in 167 missions around the world. In June, these new mission leadership couples gathered at the Provo Missionary Training Center to receive counsel and instruction from each member of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles as well as other members of the Missionary Executive Council, before they reported to their missions in July. This episode of the Church News podcast features excerpts from these messages shared during the four-day seminar, which focused on inviting others to come unto Christ, the power that comes from studying the Book of Mormon and other sacred scriptures, and the need to develop deep and personal conversion to the gospel of Jesus Christ. The Church News Podcast is a weekly podcast that invites listeners to make a journey of connection with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints across the globe. Hosts Jon Ryan Jensen, editor of the Church News, and Church News reporter Mary Richards share unique views of the stories, events, and people who form this international faith. With each episode, listeners are asked to embark on a journey to learn from one another and ponder, “What do I know now?” because of the experience. Produced by KellieAnn Halvorsen.
