Stephen Cole is an award-winning musical theatre writer whose shows have been recorded, published, and produced from New York City to London to the Middle East and Australia and Edinburgh, Scotland. His shows include: After the Fair, Night of the Hunter, Saturday Night at Grossinger's, Aspire, Time After Time, Merman's Apprentice and The Road To Qatar! to name just a few. As a producer, Stephen presented Liza Minnelli, Barbara Cook, David Hyde Pierce, and many others in an 80th Birthday Tribute to John Kander. Stephen has also released a series of CD's entitled MERMANIA on Harbinger Records. These include never before released selections sung by his favorite star and friend, Ethel Merman. Besides writing the CD booklets for these and his original cast CDs, Stephen has written the DVD booklets for the box set of THAT GIRL: SEASON ONE and ANYTHING GOES. Mary, Ethel and Mikey Who? takes Stephen's real-life friendships with Ethel Merman and Mary Martin, the two undisputed queens of Broadway, tossed them into a blender and come up with a fantasy about a nerdy super-fan in the early 1980s who, while visiting his dying idol Ethel Merman, stumbles into a time portal in her closet and exits on the other side in Sophie Tucker's star dressing room at the Imperial Theatre in 1939. Mikey Marvin Minkus gets to know his idols in their prime as he time travels through the decades with them, influencing their lives and careers, while helping to foster their legendary rivalry. Only visiting times when Merman and Martin's fates crossed, Mikey becomes a vital part of their lives, all the while interacting with such celebrated theatrical figures as Cole Porter, Jerome Robbins, Josh Logan, Dorothy Fields, Larry Hagman, Irving Berlin, Sophie Tucker, Leland Hayward, Rodgers and Hammerstein, and a newcomer named Jane Fonda.
In this week's episode of the Patreon we discussed Sidney Lumet's heady Cold War thriller Fail Safe, based on a novel of the same name by Eugene Burdick and Harvey Wheeler, published in 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Fail Safe stars Henry Fonda, Dan O'Herlihy, Walter Matthau, Frank Overton and Larry Hagman with cinematography by Gerald Hirschfeld. The story moves between three characters: U.S Air Force General Black who has been having a recurring dream in which a Spanish matador kills a bull before a cheering crowd, Dr. Groeteschele, a hard-line anti-communist and political scientist who believes it is possible to fight a limited nuclear war, and the President of the United States. When a computer error causes a U.S. bomber group to erroneously receive valid orders for a nuclear strike on Moscow — and Soviet countermeasures jam U.S. radio communications, preventing Strategic Air Command from rescinding the command — General Black, the president, the Pentagon and eventually Soviet command scrambles to prevent a full scale nuclear exchange.Working together, they manage to stop some of the bombers, but one fateful aircraft makes it through Soviet defenses to release its weapon. Faced with the unimaginable, the president and General Black decide to make a compensatory sacrifice, in the hopes of avoiding war.The tagline for Fail Safe was “It will have you sitting on the brink of eternity!”To listen to the whole episode, subscribe to the Patreon at patreon.com/unclearpod.

Post-credits scenes are so common nowadays, it's almost a surprise when there isn't a clip teasing a sequel, or an extended universe, or the next Super Mario Bros. Movie. But cliffhangers are something special. They can entice an audience to feel the irresistable urge to watch a movie or tune into an episode just to see that lingering question answered. And nobody did it better than one TV show back in 1980, when a last-minute plot twist not only changed the trajectory of that show, but led to a cultural phenomenon that persists to this day.Rob teaches Ray and Daniel about the iconic end to “Dallas”'s third season, when J.R. Ewing took a bullet from an unknown enemy; why audiences had to wait eight months to find out the identity of the mysterious culprit; how the sensation propelled Larry Hagman to international celebrity; Daniel's and Ray's personal favorite cliffhangers; the lengths to which the networks went to safeguard the premiere of the fourth season; and modern examples of great (and not so great…) cliffhangers. 2023.08.26 – 0968 – The ‘Tired' Voice Tired voiceSymptom: You sound dull, flat and a little ‘slurry' as your tongue has trouble forming words.Prescription: · A voice will become tired with the amount, volume or the tone of the sound it is being asked to perform (see: ‘vocal loading' and episode 756). Regulate your speaking so you don't speak for too long, too loudly. Consider that 10 x 1-minute breaks allow your voice-tissues to recover more effectively than 1 x 10-minute break. (Episode 774 has ‘Voice Advice From Justin Timberlake and Larry Hagman' on this.) · As well as warming-up the voice, don't forget to warm-down too, to relax the voice into its usual state and not harm it. There are some exercises in episode 928.· As well as considering and correcting what might be making you anxious mentally, do a ‘condition check' on yourself physically to see how anxiety has affected how you are holding yourself and how that is affecting the efficiency of your voice-use. Episode 846 is titled ‘Fit Body, Fit Voice' and may be of interest.· A voice will also be tired if you are physically or mentally tired. So, have a good night's sleep and if on a night shift, have an energy boost (being careful to avoid caffeine and sugar energy peaks and troughs, they're mentioned in episode 853's ‘Food And Drink Naughty List'). Inevitably, “hydrate, mate!”· Physical tension (perhaps in a rush to meet a newsroom deadline) will drain your energy so control any temptation to panic. Episode 815 is about how you can achieve Relaxation From Tension Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This week on Saturday Night Jive we watched a film that parodies the disaster movie genre that was all the rage in the 1970s. No, not Airplane!, it's The Big Bus from 1976 starring Stockard Channing, Joey Baloney, Richard Mulligan, the guy who played Richard Mulligan's partner in A Fine Mess, Rene Auberjonis, Sally Kellerman, Ned Beatty, Harold Gould, Larry Hagman, Murph from The Blues Brothers, and one-time oldest SNL host Ruth Gordon. This movie came out 4 years before Airplane!, shares a lot of similarities with Airplane!, but is in no way connected to Airplane!. The world's first nuclear powered bus is taking its maiden voyage, several accidents happen, and only Joey Baloney can drive it home safely. It's an interesting movie that's pretty funny. You may have read about it in Bus World magazine. Fondly remembered for iconic roles from the 1960's smash sitcom “I Dream of Jeannie” and the 1980's prime time hit “Dallas” Larry Hagman was a fun loving, larger than life personality who embodied the opulent, excessive, and dangerous party lifestyle of the time. Dallas was already a hit American TV series in 1980. But when its leading man, JR, was shot, the reaction worldwide was extraordinary. Claire Bowes spoke to Larry Hagman, who played JR, in 2010. (Picture: Larry Hagman leaning out of a car window. Credit: Getty Images)
