Welcome to the Wildcard Tier! In part three of our ACC preview, we tackle the unpredictable "meaty middle," featuring nine teams that could finish anywhere from 4-8 to 9-3. In this college football podcast episode, we break down the Bill Belichick experiment at North Carolina and whether the greatest NFL coach of all time can translate his genius to college football. We dive into Florida State's must-win season for Mike Norvell with new coordinators Gus Malzahn and Tony White, examine NC State's coordinator overhaul and brutal schedule, and debate whether Duke has become the most reliable mid-tier team in the conference. We discuss what it'd mean if Virginia Tech figures out how to finish in close games, Syracuse's Year 2 challenge under Fran Brown, and Boston College's intriguing pieces under Bill O'Brien. Plus, we take the temperature of hot seats at Cal and Virginia. From "weird little stinkers" to teams that could totally reframe the national conversation, this is your guide to the ACC's most fascinating roller coaster of teams. What an opening weekend of college lacrosse. We saw #13 Denver take down #5 Johns Hopkins in overtime with JJ Sillstrop going crazy and scoring the games final 4 goals, including the OT winner. We saw unranked Colgate take down #4 Penn State on the road, scoring the game winner with 4 seconds left in regulation. We saw Syracuse and Duke each roll their non-conference foes. We saw Loyola beat up on a Georgetown team that is trying out all sorts of new starters. Maryland needed 2OT's to take down Richmond on the road. Rutgers eeked out a 2-goal win over Lehigh. Ohio State was losing to Utah for most of the game before rebounding and picking up the win. We'll talk about all of these games and more in this seasons first college lacrosse weekend roundup. In our first week of college lacrosse action, Johns Hopkins taking on Denver would appear to be the big matchup of the weekend. However, I think that Ohio State is going to get a very solid test taking on Utah at home. Penn State, Maryland, Syracuse and Duke are both playing games they should handily win. Rutgers hosting Lehigh, and Loyola hosting Georgetown should actually end up being the best games of the weekend. Another rewarding, and interesting, weekend of college basketball has GP and Norlander opening with Texas Tech's dominant revenge win over Kansas. From there, the guys get to Duke-Syracuse (7:25), which includes another edition of Trivia Time. Early Saturday, LSU won in overtime at home vs. Tennessee (20:00), so the guys are not short of topics to touch on there. Sunday's biggest result was Michigan State beating Michigan on the road (28:30), Sparty now asserting itself once more as the best team in the Big Ten. In closing, Parrish waxes on the public protest made by Ole Miss players Saturday (38:00) in response to pro-confederacy demonstrations made on Mississippi's campus on Saturday. Weekend watchlist is here! Charlie talks about all of the big games this weekend including three from the local teams in the area. The first five minutes is spent discussing last night's great Bucks win then it transitions to the watchlist. Here are the games worth walking this weekend. Bucks-Timberwolves, Marquette-Providence, Wisconsin-Northwestern, Michigan State-Michigan, Kansas-Texas Tech, WGC-Mexico, Tennessee-LSU, Rockets-Warriors, Duke-Syracuse, Spurs-Raptors.
Zion Williamson's shoe-busting, knee-spraining spectacle less than a minute into the UNC game was the perfect storm of content creation for national discourse about Zion, Duke, the amateurism model and the NBA. But Parrish and Norlander do their best to cut through the obviousness and get to the things you might not have heard addressed. But also: Parrish got into a Twitter spat with Trae Young (23:00)! The guys also get into Norlander's powerful story about LSU succeeding despite losing a player to murder in the preseason (35:45) and wrap with a preview of six big games (42:05): Virginia-Louisville; Tennessee-LSU; Florida State-UNC; Duke-Syracuse; Kansas-Texas Tech; and Michigan State-Michigan.
