On DBR Bites #60, we preview Duke's upcoming game against UConn and we celebrate so many members of The Brotherhood coming back to campus! First, we preview Duke's upcoming football game against UConn this weekend. UConn is a team that struggled mightily against Maryland but turned it around against Merrimack. Donald and Jason discuss what to watch for when the two teams take the field as well as what UConn brings to the table. There are a couple of skill players to watch as well as who could be under center for the Huskies. After the break, we get into some basketball stuff, led by a cool event that will be on campus on October 5th. Jason will be down at Duke for Dribble for Victory Over Cancer, an event that raises money for pediatric cancer research. Jason has created a DBR Podcast fundraising team, so join us to try and raise some money for a great cause! We then get into the latest Duke Blue Planet episode, where tons of basketball alums returned to campus for one fun weekend. But, the episode has an inadvertent focus on Khaman Maluach in a really cool way, as you see how his interactions with Dereck Lively and his coaches shows how coachable he is and how quickly he learns. Finally, friend of the pod Shane Battier has a new podcast! It's called Glue Guys, and it's discussing the unsung heroes of life. This week's episode is special because it marks the launch of a new Colossus show: Glue Guys. My guests this week are the hosts of the new show, Shane Battier, Alex Smith, and Ravi Gupta. Shane, Ravi, and Alex's stories are remarkable. Each has been at the very top of their profession. Shane as an NCAA and NBA champion. Alex as the first pick in the NFL draft, 3 time-pro bowler, and 16-year NFL veteran. Ravi as a leader at KKR, and then as a critical leader turning around & building Instacart, and now as a partner at Sequoia. But those parts of their stories pale in comparison to the stories you'll hear on Glue Guys.  Glue Guys is an unfolding manual for HOW to be a professional, a teammate, a leader, and even a friend and family member. In this episode of ILtB, we explore the general concept of glue guys—the people who are obsessed with helping the team win, whether they are the leader or newest member of the team. Please enjoy this conversation with Shane, Alex, and Ravi. The 16 wins were the most for the Pirate program in nearly a decade (2013-14) and the six conference victories tied for the most since the Pirates joined the American prior to the start of the 2014-15 season. ECU defeated South Florida 73-58 in the first round of the AAC tournament to win its first game in the tournament since 2017. Under Schwartz's guidance, Ezra Ausar led all AAC freshmen in field goal percentage at 56 percent (5th best in AAC) to become the first Pirate freshman since 2019 to be unanimously selected to the All-AAC Freshman Team. The Pirates were also one of the league's top offensive rebounding clubs at 12.2 per game and in rebounding margin at +2.1, led by Brandon Johnson's 8.1 rebounds and 10 double-doubles.Considered one of the most versatile and well-rounded assistant coaches in college basketball, Schwartz spent the last seven seasons on staff at the University of Tennessee – including four as the associate head coach. In the fall of 2019, Schwartz earned feature placement on The Athletic's list of the nation's top-25 up-and-coming college basketball coaches.  Schwartz also boasts valuable experience with USA Basketball, having served in a support capacity for the 2000 USA Youth Development Festival, the 2000 USA National Select Team—coached by Mike Jarvis and Bob Huggins and featuring future NBA stars Shane Battier and Jason Richardson—and the 2001 Young Men's World Championship Trials.

Confidence Hack #68: Being the ultimate ‘glue guy' translates to a winning culture. Shane Battier. From the outside world looking in, Shane's skills weren't flashy. He wasn't dunking on anyone's head or making the coolest crossover moves. He wasn't even stuffing the stat sheet like you would think an NBA player would. But what Shane brought to every team he played for at every level was the most critical aspect a player can bring: winning. Adhesion and cohesion are the two main components in making glue sticky. Shane's General Manager, when he played for the Houston Rockets, Daryl Morey, stated, “I call him Lego. When he's on the court, all the pieces start to fit together. Shane's physical skills might have not been on par with the top players in his sport, but no one matched his IQ, EQ, and ability to be the glue guy for every team he was on. What if you were the glue guy or glue girl for your family?  For your company? For your friends? For the team around you? You can be! Gain confidence today knowing that being the ‘glue guy' in your life is far more important than being the ‘star.' Hey! If you love this show, share it with family and friends! After studying physical education at Central Michigan, his first coaching job helped the smallest high school compete in its conference. He went from a grad assistant job at Michigan State to head strength coach at Washington State in just one year, helping turn around a football program that hadn't been to a bowl game in 50 years. The U came calling and Bill moved to Miami, where he prepared the football team to reach a 55-5 record and win two national championships. After 29 seasons as the Heat's head strength and conditioning coach, Bill passed the torch to his son, Eric. Today's episode is a special one, in a format that may turn into a series. It is a conversation between Ravi Gupta and Shane Battier. Ravi is a partner at Sequoia, one of our most popular past guests, and a good friend. Shane is Ravi's friend, and one of the most successful basketball players ever, having won championships and awards at the high school, college, and NBA levels.   I spent 10 years as a purely quantitative investor, so naturally I was obsessed with data in sports. When I was meeting with prospective investors, Michael Lewis's book Moneyball—which chronicled the data analytics revolution in baseball—was my go-to analogy to explain what I did… “Moneyball, but for investing.” I used that line for years.   I've learned firsthand that it's wise to follow your curiosity, no matter how strange or different it may be. The podcast is my curiosity tour, and years ago it led me to Sam Hinkie—who is himself on the Mt. Rushmore of analytics in sports. Sam introduced me to Ravi. Then Ravi sent me Michael Lewis' article written about Shane called “The No Stats All-Star.” I highly recommend you read it.   All this serendipity around friends, data, investing, and sports gave me an idea: why not ask Ravi to interview Shane? There were so many valuable ideas in the Michael Lewis article, I thought we'd get even more in a real taped interview with someone that knew Shane well, and that's exactly what happened. Ravi likes the idea of playing for the front of the jersey, not the back. It is hard to imagine someone that lived that more than Shane. Shane shares his story, lessons learned from various coaches, and using data as an advantage. He also explains the four kinds of teams he's encountered, which I found simple, and memorable.  I hope you enjoy this great conversation, and if you have ideas for other iconic duos we could bring on in a similar format, DM me on Twitter.
