Infertility affects every 1 in 6 people. Emily Getz is that 1 in 6, and in the span of a few years experienced a pregnancy loss at 23 weeks, an ectopic pregnancy, and then a miscarriage at 8 weeks. During her infertility journey, Emily started doing mindset work and using strategies to feel and work through her grief, and envision what she wanted for her future. Because of this work, she started Day1 Fertility to help open the infertility conversation, make it less taboo, and create a safe space for anyone needing answers and someone to talk to. Listen in as host, Emily Getz, as she documents her experience undergoing their third round of IVF. Emily gives a truly vulnerable and emotional inside look on what it feels like to go through IVF. This episode feels like you are a fly on the wall as she authentically shares how it feels to be on STIMS, how hard it is to have to change the game plan mid round, how she manages coming to terms with embryo results and ultimately how devastating it is when it doesn't work (again). Emily's husband, Evan Mintz, joins her time to time to share his POV and how he manages his journey. They are extremely hopeful for all future news and know they are that much closer to meeting their baby as they continue on their fertility journey.
In honour of #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth, Emily Getz, chats with Katrina Durst, who shares how her journey to becoming a mom lead her down a path that had her switching gears from her fertility diagnosis to a cancer one. The past five years, Katrina has overcome 2 miscarriages, Ashermans, 4 egg retrievals, 3 surrogates, 4 failed transfers, a breast cancer diagnosis, a stenotic cervix, multiple hysteroscopies and a near hysterectomy - say that 10 times - plus one surprise. All this and more is what we chat about in today's episode.
What about the grandparents? A question that is rarely asked during your fertility journey, but isn't this all impacting them too? The generation that puts on a strong face to be the beacon of hope and support for their children, are experiencing grief in their own ways too. Bleema Getz, the mother of host, Emily Getz, sits down with Day 1 to bring to light the challenges a parent faces when their child is experiencing fertility challenges, a point of view that has yet to be heard. And not only does Bleema discuss her experience managing Emily's fertility journey, but she bravely shares her own story of loss, making this a 40-year fertility journey for Bleema, one that spans generations. This episode was taped on September 30th, 2021 - exactly 38 years to the day - Bleema experienced a full term loss.
In today's episode Day 1 host, Emily Getz, speaks to social worker, Sarah Goodman, MSW, RSW, on the importance of building community to help support yourself when going through fertility challenges. Sarah speaks to how her own experience with multiple miscarriages lead her to co-found Eva Wellness, a mental health service and community where women can feel empowered, informed, and supported throughout their journey to motherhood and beyond. This is an important story as it sheds light on the impact miscarriages have and how many who experience them can sometimes feel isolated within the infertility community because their story might not be "big" enough. Sarah beautifully speaks to how she built a community to support her in a way that worked for her, how she became a first time mother through the COVID-19 pandemic and how her experiences inspired the creation of Eva Wellness.

“I'm so far away from the life I was supposed to have.” Just one of the beautiful and profound statements Emily Getz makes in our open and frank conversations about her experience moving through secondary pregnancy loss and infertility. She stopped me in my tracks with this statement because I believe it's a familiar refrain for so many of us (whether consciously or unconsciously); this belief that we should be somewhere other than right where we are. In Emily's case, this idea she was missing out on the life she was supposed to have related to building her family. But of course, we can think this way about other aspect of our lives too, like our work, social or financial status, the quality of our relationships, or even our spiritual development. And when this belief is active within us, it can really suck all the fun and enjoyment out of the here and now, as Emily so beautifully illustrates through a story about her son Ryder. We cover a lot of ground in this episode, but the overarching message is the need to let go of the life you thought you were supposed to have so you can have (and enjoy) the life meant for you. Letting go of beliefs, thoughts and things that aren't true to who we are, is essentially what healing allows us to do. And when we are willing to move through this painful and often scary process of healing, what awaits us on the other side is often unexpected (but super cool!) and always in alignment with the truth of who we are. For Emily, one of those unexpected outcomes is the creation of her new podcast. Day 1 aims to normalize the experience of pregnancy loss and infertility - particularly here in Canada where for the most part, the conversation has yet to penetrate the mainstream - through interviews with experts and people with lived experience of infertility. By carving out space for these important conversations, Emily hopes to create an amazing, positive loop: a better educated public who can respond more effectively to people experiencing infertility, who will then feel more understood by the people around them and be more likely to share their experience which will continue to educate the public ... An amazing positive loop, indeed. To connect with Emily directly and subscribe to her podcast, follow her on Instagram @_day1podcast. I reached Emily at her home in Toronto.
Emily Getz talks about the Day 1 Podcast, which debuts Summer 2021.
Today's episode features Emily Getz, an abstract expressionist from Bushwick, New York. Emily's path into the world of art was quite unexpected. As a result of Covid, Emily lost her creative job in the Fashion Industry and found painting as a way to deal with the daily stress, anxiety and worries that we as humans all face. Channeling her energy into this new creative medium, Emily's acrylic and oil pastel paintings focus on movement, texture, space and color. Offering us a glimmer of hope, a sliver of sunlight, a visual of a daydream, the aim of her paintings is to bring joy, color, and hope into the lives of others. After showcasing her work on Instagram, she began to gain attention and traffic to her work. When a friend reached out to buy a piece, she realized that people might want to buy her work, so she decided to research ways on how to market herself as an artist. In this episode, Emily talks about the struggles, realities and fears of selling her work, the beauty of finding her passion during Covid, her art process and approach and what art means to her. You can see Emily's artwork on her Instagram and feel free to support her journey and business by sharing her work to your friends, family and on social!
